TRANSPORTATION UPDATE FOR 2016-2017

Following extensive consultations and deliberations, the TCDSB Board of Trustees approved a balanced budget of $1.078 billion for 2016-2017 at their meeting on June 2nd, 2016. All school boards are required by law under the Education Act of Ontario to submit a balanced budget. The Board had to make a number of very difficult decisions at all levels of the organization. Bus service will no longer be provided for students who do not meet the criteria set out in the Board’s Transportation Policy. Non-Qualifying Students are defined as students transported from a select geographical area that do not meet the eligibility requirement (such as those living closer than 1.5 km from the school).

New Beginnings in Mrs. Stergar’s and Mrs. Myrda’s Kindergarten Class

Oh wow, the year has gone by so quickly. We were so busy all year, we did so much and learned every-day and all the while, had so much fun that we did not realize how fast the time went by. The year start-ed off getting to know each other. We all had a special day when we were either a king or queen and our new friends made us a book. We participated in Fun Friends that helped us adjust to school. Throughout the year, we had turns being the shining star or helper-which was always special. We par-ticipated in school actives like the Winter Carnival, church for our monthly celebration of God, movies and a play day. We had fantastic visitors come to see us and we learned interesting things from each of them. We learned and explored different animal habitats with Scientist Laurie. Mr. Chapel came and showed us different ani-mal skins, furs and talked to us about how animals survive in the wild. We participated in a drama performance of a Little Red Riding Hood where we all danced and pretended to be different types of animals. As a whole group, the kindergarten classes went on a trip to Round the Bend Farm. We learned about planting seeds, the importance of bees and how honey is made. We also went on a nature walk and tractor ride through the farm. In the spring, we had a special assignment. A farmer delivered eggs and an incubator. We watched and took care of the eggs and wait-ed for the chicks to hatch. After 21 days we had our first hatched chick. Within a week we had 9 chicks as part of our classroom. The farmer eventually came back and took them to the farm where they will grow more. We celebrated and learned about the special days and holidays throughout the year. We even had a special day in February to cele-brate that we were 100 days smarter! We made so many special projects and crafts for our moms and dads -it kept us busy all year! Now it’s time to say “Bye for now” to our Senior Kindergarten friends. We wish you good luck in Grade 1 -we know you will succeed. Our Junior Kindergarten students and Mrs. Myrda will meet new friends and have a new teacher to learn and have fun with in September. We wish everyone a safe and super fun summer break:)

Ms. Bellini, Mrs. Bellissimo/Ms. Major, Ms. Sitko Kindergarten Class

We have had an amazing and exciting year full of new experiences and learning. We have made new friends and enjoyed getting to know our Reading Buddies. Each day was filled with outdoor play, songs, stories, experiments and lots of learning.

We started the year off with the fabulous Fall Fair where our families enjoyed playing games and eating yummy food. The

Christmas Concert was a big highlight as we practiced and practiced until the big day arrived. We were a big hit as we all

remembered all the words and actions to our songs. February saw us celebrating the 100th day of school. It was so exciting

to make necklaces with 100 Fruit Loops! We also learned so much from Our Scientist in the School. Scientist Laurie taught

us about animal habitats. We made nests, made animal tracks and pretended to be an animal going through a tunnel. It was

so much fun and we learned a lot about different animals. Bonhomme came to our classroom and we had a contest to see

who could yell Bonhomme the loudest. We were so thrilled when April arrived as we went to visit Round the Bend Farm

where we went on a hayride, planted seeds and went to the barn to see the baby chicks, goats, pigs and ducks. We even got

to pat them! In May, we celebrated The Rosary at the church where we recited a poem and sang a song about Mary. The

highlight of the year was hatching our chicks. We had an incubator which kept the eggs warm and had to remember to turn

them five times a day. After twenty days, we were able to watch the chicks work their way out of the eggs. They worked so

hard, they had to rest in the incubator until they were dry. We chose names for the chicks by having a vote. It was hard to

tell them apart but we were always able to tell which one was Rex as he was the tallest chick. We fed the chicks and gave

them water and watched them quickly grow. It was an amazing experience to end an amazing year!

Mrs. Cosentino & Mrs. Esteban Kindergarten Class

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived! 10 months have passed very quickly! The year’s end always brings with it a tremendous sense of accomplishment. We had a great time in Kindergarten. We've made so many wonderful memories and had so much fun together. From the Fun Fair in Sep-tember to the Year End Celebration Picnic- our students were involved in an ex-

traordinary number of activities.

One of our favourite moments from this year was the school’s Christmas Concert. It was a huge hit. We rehearsed and rehearsed and gave a perfect performance on the Big Day. February was very exciting as we celebrated the 100th Day of School. We had a visit from Scientist Grace who taught us about our 5 Senses. It was so fun and we talked about it for weeks. We also celebrated the Bonhomme Carnival which was very exciting. Playing the outdoor games for the first time and warming up with hot chocolate and a cookie afterwards was a real treat.

In April, we went on our first class trip! We visited Round the Bend Farm. We enjoyed a wagon ride around the farm and learned some really cool things about plants and animals. In May, we prepared for and per-formed at the Rosary Celebration. So much care and hard work went into our preparations. We also watched as our chicks hatched this year. From the very first day the eggs were delivered there was a buzz of excitement and anticipation. Each morning, we immediately popped in to check how things were going. Lots of questions and answers generated a huge amount of great learning in our class. Our discussions were richer because of the twelve little visitors. This experience was shared by the whole school community who were all eager to visit us. We were all touched by this "miracle of life". It has been an experience that will stay with us for a long time. As you can see this year has been great. Every day was a new adventure. Have a safe and happy summer everyone!

Mr. Sloan’s Grade 4 End of Year 2015-2016 Summary

Hello Fellow School Students,

We are going to talk about our astonishing year and our teacher we adore, Mr. Sloan. We went on so many trips and events. We could talk to you about all the trips, but there were too many so we are going to talk about our top three.

First is the ski trip. In February, where we thought was going to be a white wonderland, was more like a bus cancellation day. The class and chaperones were defeated when mother nature outsmarted us on our school trip. We had to stay at school and do work all day when we were missing out on a day of skiing (except for the children who stayed at home and chilled out)! We got to see “M” though.

There was another trip where kings and queens existed and swords were used daily. This was Medieval Times, an educational experience where knights in shining armour would battle. Roses were thrown into the crowds of “pumped up” peasants and lords and ladies. We were followers of the yellow knight, but unfortunately he lost in battle.

Last but not least was Alice in Wonderland, at the Shaw Festival, a heart spoken and life changing play. It had a fantastic moral that everyone loved but it was a long bus ride to Niagara on the Lake!

The year was not just filled with field trips but also with sad and happy moments. We said hello and good-bye to two of the best student teachers, Ms. T and Ms. Waddell, and to two of the most friendly students our class has ever seen, Zenya and Mara. There were not just sad moments but also happy moments too. To say “hi” to a new student, Keisha and welcoming back Mara.

As you all know, the school year is coming to a conclusion, with happy and sad moments, we were able to push through and get over it as a team. Mr. Sloan taught us all we need to know and more. He raised everybody’s expectations! We all loved how Mr. Sloan made our school work enjoyable, which we didn’t think was possible or could happen. He raised the bar so high he could have won best teacher of the year. He did in our hearts.

We had a fantastic year in Mrs. Avila’s Grade 2 class! We did fairy tales in drama and dressed up. We used Twitter to post things we did in class. In Science, we did the Liquids Race with maple syrup, mustard and ketchup and maple syrup won!(Marcella) I loved Robotics. Robotics helped me with my Lego skills. The trips to Harbourfront Centre and Willowgrove Farm were very cool. I liked finding stuff. (Julian) Contraction Surgery at Avila General Hospital was awesome. We did surgery. We saved word’s lives! Rock and Roll Santas for the Christmas concert was awesome. We sang a song and had guitars as we danced.(Chloe) In Math, I liked when we did chocolate bar math, built 3-D shapes out of marshmallows, and when my teacher ordered a real pizza to show us fractions in real life!(Camilla) I liked the Toronto Maple Leaf visit because we got to see players from the team. I liked the Dance and Light show parties we had because they were fun. I liked doing the CAT 4 test because I got perfect on the spelling test.(Anthony) This year was very special because we had our First Holy Communion. We also had fun at the 100th day of school when we dressed up as old people.(Leia) The funnest thing we did this year was the STEM building activities like a house for the Three Little Pigs and a new bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff.(Steven) We are a great class family!

We had an awesome year in grade three! In the beginning of the year, we went on a trip to the Humber Arboretum. We learned about different kinds of soils. We got free hot chocolate too! It rained all day but we went on a nature walk anyway. We felt different soil samples, including mud in our hands.

For our next trip, we went to the Living Arts Centre. We made landscape art with cardboard and we painted our art. In the afternoon, we went to the dance studio to do drama. We made tableaus.

Our third trip was to Crawford Lake. We each got a wooden necklace and drew animals on it. We went on a nature trail and saw wooden sculptures of animals. We went into some long houses and saw lots of aboriginal items. We saw and touched bear, wolf, rabbit and beaver fur. Cindy was chosen to help make a small fire with a rock, flint, cedar leaves and white fluff from the dandelion weed. On June 15, some students in our class went to the Shaw Festival at Niagara on the Lake. That was awesome!

Other Activities & Events: During Advent, we lit Advent candles and had Advent Celebrations. We made lots of Christ-mas art too. In the spring we welcomed our new student from Mexico, Santiago. We did lots of projects such as speeches, ‘Introducing Me”, “Halloween Monologue” and a ‘Book Talk”. In Science we learned about Soil and made structures that a real Engineer tested. In June we planted seeds and learned about plants.

We got to collect books for the Book Bank program. In Social Studies we learned about Aboriginals and cities in Ontario.

We did a lot of plays and loads of writing and reading. In language we wrote fractured fairy tales and fables. We wrote para-graphs and one of our assignments was ‘What happened to the chewed up bird feeder’ that Mrs. Suraci brought to school. We all made up different scenarios. We did retelling. Our favorite story was called ‘In a Cloud of Dust.’

We saw a great presentation called Raven Nature, we skyped with a real astronaut, had three Toronto Maple Leaf hockey players come to our school and the author, Phillip Roy came to talk about books. These events were very exciting.

In Fully Alive we learned how babies are born and how to be kind to each other. We also learned about family schedules.

The grade threes from Mrs. Varney’s class joined us every day for math. Our other subjects were French with Mme. Napo-leone, Music with Mrs. Rigby, Health with Mr. Fioravanti and Gym with Mr. Ciardulli.

We also had some breaks and played games like ‘Mummy Ball’, a Colour Game with a volleyball and Mrs. Suraci let our class have a lot of DPA.

We had a wonderful year in grade 3 with Mrs. Suraci and our classmates.

Being in Mrs. Neri’s class this year has been very enjoyable, and a great experience. Everyone was excited to find out they were in Mrs. Neri’s class, but the grade sixes were a little nervous to be with the grade sevens. We soon became fast friends, and around the same time the work load increased. We learned a lot of new and interesting things such as the Pythagorean theory and coordinate grids with the four quadrants in Math. One project that the grade six’s worked on was Canada and its trading partners, in social studies. One of the projects that the grade sevens worked on was the life and time of a historical figure, in history. We participated in many fun activities and special events during the year. In September we started Cross Country. There were many people who joined and our school did very well. Halloween came up in October and we had an exciting dance to celebrate. In November, the grade sevens were all anxious, why? Because they had their Mansfield trip coming up. In December, making gingerbread houses resulted in us not wanting to leave for Christmas break! In February, there was Bonhomme Carnavale, it was super Fun! All the runners got ready in April because it was time for Track and Field! In May it was ballroom dancing. We were all a little nervous but eventually everyone had fun. We rehearsed for several weeks and finally the recital arrived. All the girls were wearing beautiful dresses and the boys wore amazing suits or dress shirts and pants. A little while after ballroom we went on a field trip to Father John Redmond. We watched a show called Curtain Call. The last month of school, June, was a busy one. Our last field trip of the year was in the beginning of June, we went to the Hockey Hall of Fame. It was a lot of fun, doing a scavenger hunt and watching a 3D movie. Another fun thing in June was our health and wellness day. We ended off our year healthy, active and with knowledge about nutrition. Overall, our year was really amazing and it was all thanks to our amazing teacher Mrs. Neri. We cannot thank you enough for all the wonderful things you have taught us. We have had such an amazing and successful year, we will miss you over the summer and we hope to see you next year.

Mrs. Malowany’s Grade 5 Class Written by Alison and Lauren

We had an awesome grade 5 year with Mrs. Malowany! We met new people and reunited with old friends. Following a 21st century learning model, made our learning experience so exciting. There was never a dull moment! As our learning became more complicated we really started to think more and challenge ourselves. We learned about so many interesting topics like, "Government," and visited City Hall where we met the Mayor! There were so many interesting projects and tasks, like writing digital poems, creating booktrailers, Genius hour projects, Inquiry tasks, computer coding, making robots, using Google Classroom, our digital portfolios and many more. The trips were a lot of fun, especially Crawford Lake and The Shaw Festival. We learned so much from each other during our knowledge building circle discussions! One of the best parts of this year was when we chose an issue that was important to us and we came up with an action plan to solve the issue. We sent our action plan to Prime Minister Trudeau and he wrote back to us. THAT WAS REALLY COOL! We learned so much! It was such a wonderful grade 5 year!!!

Mrs. Harrington Grade 1/2 Class Oh what fun it was to learn in the 1 /2 class this year . . .

This year was a year filled with:

Bouncing in the bouncy castle at the Fall Fun Fair.

Mr. Sandre Grade 7/8 by Elise H.

It is hard to believe that it is already the end of the year! It seems like just yester-day we walked into school anticipating what teacher we were going to get and how much homework they were going to assign. Even though we had been through this drill many times first-day-of-school jitters never change especially because

most of us are sleep deprived. As my classmates and I filed into Mr.Sandre’s Grade 7 /8 class we all rushed to get the best seats in the class, preferably the ones beside our friends. After that day (which was a very nerve racking one) school flew by with daily French lessons from Mme. Napole-one and weekly opportunities to help out from Mr. Sandre such as hamburger day, pancake day, multiple dances and much more. Mr. Sandre not only taught us above and beyond our curriculum standards but he also constantly pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves that we could be. This sometimes got on our nerves but in the end this helped us get ready for the next chapter in our lives, if it was going into grade eight or moving on to high school. He also did this with many jokes, a few friendly visits from our favourite canine TC. As the year went on our class molded into a family making class trips to The Hockey Hall of Fame and Snow-tubing. We always had a ton of fun together especially when we used to break out singing the fresh prince theme song and Last Christmas in the middle of class. Throughout this year we have always had a sense of inclusion in our classroom alongside with constant laughter over various inside jokes. This year was an excit-ing year we grew together, learned together and now we are moving on together. The grade sev-ens are moving on to their final year of elementary school, the grade eights are going into high school and even Mr. Sandre is retiring after thirty years of teaching .One thing my classmates and I can take away from this year is that it is important to work hard and try your best, but it is also im-portant to have fun without being “dwebish” as Mr. Sandre would say. So as we all go in our sepa-rate directions I believe all twenty-eight of us in Mr. Sandre’s class will look back on these

memories fondly.

Mr .Scatozza Grade 8

Well it’s finally here! We cannot believe that it is June and the end of the school year is quickly approaching. The grade eight class has gone on a learning adventure this year, both in the school and the community at large. As with any graduating class, there is plenty to accomplish before we are ready to progress to the next level. Most of the class participated in the preparation and receiving of the sacrament of Confirmation. It was a process that required a great deal of time and effort but we persevered and received the sacrament. Throughout the year, many of us worked to make Holy Angels a better place. Whether it was participating in Student Council, helping out in the office, participating as Reading Buddies with Mrs. Cosentino’s kindergarten class, or acting as Lunch Monitors, the class was always ready to lend a help-ing hand. We also had an end of year trip to Ottawa. We had a first-hand glimpse of the city that is responsible for Federal Government decisions. The scenic bike tour tired us out, but it allowed us to see the city from an entirely different vantage point. Overall, I would say that the trip was a success. Now with all of that complete, we are ready to progress to the next chapter of their lives, namely high school. Our time at Holy Angels may have concluded, but we remember all the good we were able to provide the Holy Angels school community.

Year End Summary - Mrs. Grosso’s Class

By: Tayah C-E. and Charlotte A.

I’m pretty sure that we are speaking for all our classmates when we say we have had a very successful and fun year. Now, let’s start from the beginning so we can tell you just how special our class, and this year was to us. On the first day, September 4th, everyone had rushed into the gym to all see who was in their new grade 5 class. Soon later, it was

discovered that Ms. Commisso and Mrs. Malowany, one or the other, were going to be one of our teachers this year. Once we got into the classroom, once again, like last year for some, our seats in Ms. Commisso’s class were assigned. In a few days, we had made, “Our Bucket Filling Contract” and had all signed it, agreeing to the rules that were stated. We were introduced to genius hour, and inquiry based learning. On Friday, October 9th the grade 5 students went on a trip to Harbourfront Centre to participate in an all day workshop called, "Government Exploration." It was a really ex-citing and fun trip. But, we obviously did some work in that month. Over the first couple months of the school year we were introduced to social studies, science, math, language, religion and life skills, like learning skills and work habits. For our social studies unit, we had a few speakers come in October to tell us about government. After that, we also dressed up for halloween and performed a 1 minute monologue. It was interesting to see what our classmates dressed up as.

In November, wow has time gone by! The teachers have started the parent/teacher conferences. Our class was work-ing, and working. Our fixed mindsets were slowly growing into growth mindsets. Our class has been very exposed to change and sayings like, “Grade 6 is harder than you think!” and, “Oh, good luck in grade 6!” We were working on our social studies posters, great canadian project and more. Then it was December, we had ballroom dancing. We were not that interested in dancing with a partner, so it was very… awkward. We also did poetry with our student teacher, Ms. Malkoska. We had tons of fun making powtoons. Then we had Christmas break! Next, it was January. 2016. Our class read the emotion-triggering, Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. We also researched on what social me-dia was and what websites were safe and are trustworthy. In February Ms. Commisso got married and officially changed her name to Mrs. Grosso. That was pretty much it for February, and we didn't do anything super exciting for the rest of the year… (just kidding) But, that is mostly it for February. Next, March came along, and though we didn't do to much, it was sure fun. We were assigned to write speeches to either inform, persuade or entertain others. All of the speeches were awesome. Also we enjoyed our March break and the celebration of Easter! Then April came along and our class was piled up with a bunch of work and the teachers were still reminding us that we were going into grade 6. Even though there was a lot of work, we still enjoyed it because of our helpful teachers and our encouraging classmates. Then May came along. By then we were super anxious for the end of school- so close yet so far. On May 21st, we went to Crawford lake. It was interesting, a great learning experience for all of us. That brings us to June. Currently it's June and we are kind of sad that the end of the school year is coming so soon. We will miss our class-mates and teachers over the school break, but we are still excited for summer. This school year we have learned so much. We are grateful for everything that the school year has given us: Knowledge, Friends, Courage, Gratitude, Hope, and much more. Thank you staff and students for giving us an amazing school year : ) Love Mrs. Grosso’s Class

Mrs. Galica Grade 1

By Megan B., Emma S., Maria L., Soreya D., and Gabriel L.

They say “time flies when you’re having fun”. Well, we certainly must have had a lot of fun this past year, because we can’t believe grade one is over! This was such a big year for us. Most of us started out just learning to read and write, but now we’re doing so, so much better. We did lots of practice every day, with Mrs. Galica making sure we were doing it right. Our “schema” improved and grew, helping us get smarter and smarter with each passing day. Math, language, science, social studies, health, French, gym, music, religion/family life, art, drama, dance…. there was not a single day that we didn’t learn something. Throughout the year we enjoyed the school fun fair, a scientist visit to our class, the Halloween dance, the Christmas concert where we sang “I Saw Three Ships”, making snowmen and snow forts in the schoolyard, the Bonhomme Carnival, drama and dance workshops, a visit from a firefighter and a former hockey player, trips to Round the Bend Farm and Harbourfront, reading buddies, learning to read with stamina, presenting monologues to the class, using the ipads, seeing the Earth Day movie at the Queensway Thea-tre, hamburger and pizza days, hot lunches and milk and popcorn, cookie and movie day, end-of-year play day, and so, so, so much more. It was a very busy year!!! We made new friends, lost some front teeth, grew a little taller, became more re-sponsible, and learned to work together. We donated food and books, and raised money with our dress-down days to help needy people. Then we ended off the school year by presenting the final school mass. What an awesome time we had in grade one! Now we are all set for grade two, but first…some summer holiday fun!!

A YEAR IN MR. Marques GRADE 6 CLASS by Bronte S. T

To start the year we had Mrs. Nifo; it was fun ended too soon. Then along came Mrs. Gomes and we slowly emerged from our cocoons.

Mrs. Gomes sadly went off to teach another class. Mr. Marques appeared and boy did the months pass.

While time flew, we had lots to do. We were leaders in the Northern Spirit Games and we learned some new dances too.

In math we learned about ratios, graphs and that BEDMAS is always right. In science we studied outer space, flight and the speed of light

In French we learned to speak fluently and now there is lots we can say. In health we learned about the importance of staying active every day.

As writers we wrote poems, stories, scripts and essays that were nice. But please don’t ask that dreaded question ‘what is a comma splice?

For Art we made realistic portraiture and learned about photography. Ballroom demanded great tenacity to keep up with Ms. Alexandra’s choreography.

Our athletic teams rocked this year; the Angels were feared and so many cheered. Playing soccer, cross-country, track, softball, basketball, volleyball and swim, we always tried to win.

EQAO has been cancelled after months of preparation and as June rolls along it’s time for our brains and bodies to take a vacation.

Our uniforms no longer fit quite so well as before; we all grew so much this year and will probably grow more.

Mr. Marques, grade six has come and gone too fast. We have lots to remember and will return in September so do not forget the past.

Grade One has been a fun and exciting year full of learning and new ex-periences. We were a little bit nervous but ready to move on from kin-dergarten and be big kids. We were happy to start grade one with our teacher Mrs. Gaglia and cross the finish line to Grade 2 with Mr. Encar-nacao. In Grade 1 we made new friends and formed new friendships which we continue throughout the summer and into September. We had a lot of fun when we went to watch the Earth Day movie at the Queensway Cineplex. It was an even better time when we went to Round the Bend farm to learn about farm life and to the Harbourfront Centre for our Colour Exploration and Printmaking art work-shops. In Science, we had an Energy presentation followed by some learning centres that extended our understanding with our Scientist in the School. Mr. E made Math more in-teresting for us by doing experiments to help us learn. In Art we got to learn about new art techniques such as pointillism, perspective, point-of-view and Van Gogh flowers for Mother's Day. Our class really enjoyed our 'Colour Dragons' drama workshop in the Spring as well as learning Salsa, Merengue and Samba in our dance workshop in the Winter. We felt really proud in giving back by helping out with the May Rosary celebra-tion and in helping create posters and making an announcement to help raise books for the Children's Book Bank to help those in need. There are so many new things that we learned this year and we are ready and prepared to see what Grade 2 has in store for us. But before that, we're ready to enjoy our summer vacation!
