Schools across Canada are invited to participate in The Spirit of Mandela School-Based Initiative

April 27- May 1, 2009 The Spirit of Mandela is a national school based initiative that changes the way society treats its children and youth and carries Mandela’s legacy by educating Canadian students about Nelson Mandela and South Africa’s rich culture and history. Through educational and community oriented activities, students are challenged to explore the issues facing children and youth in South Africa, the effect of HIV and AIDS, poverty and social justice. The program empowers students by showing them the positive impact they can have locally and internationally through volunteering. They also learn about the life of Nobel Laureate and honorary Canadian citizen Nelson Mandela, his long struggle against apartheid, and the development of an inclusive and democratic South Africa society. Each participant is given the opportunity to actively respond to what they learn by participating with their school or classroom to the Spirit of Mandela Week.

What you need to get involved! • Go to www.spiritofmandela.ca • Register your school • Download the resource materials for your school • Check out the discussion boards for advice and activities from other schools across Canada and share

your ideas! • From April 27 until May 1, 2009, join students and teachers across Canada and participate in The

Spirit of Mandela 2009 activities! • Organize an assembly and encourage students to make short presentations on the different stages of

Nelson Mandela’s life, show a video about Nelson Mandela, make morning announcements including quotes from Nelson Mandela, have a poster and essay contests or organize an art exhibition or any other ideas you might have to make the Spirit of Mandela week a success at your school!

"My heart's been touched after two lessons of Spirit of Mandela Week at the school. His [Nelson Mandela]

humility, courage and confidence have had a big impact on me." ~ D. R., 14-year-old, Spirit of Mandela week 2007

ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL PERFORMANCE BROADCAST Last October, the Senior Choir of St. Michael’s Choir School gave a memorable performance of St. Matthew Passion composed by the Most Reverend Hilarion Alfeyev, Russian Orthodox Bishop of Vienna, for choir, soloists, and string orchestra. It was the English-language world première, and Bishop Hilarion, Archbishop Collins and other dignitaries were in attendance. The broadcast of this beautiful setting of the Passion is a fitting way to mark the beginning of the holy season of Lent. The choirboys, soloists, and string players were all outstanding. This performance of St. Matthew Passion will be broadcast on Salt+Light television on Saturday, March 7th at 9:30 pm ET and repeat on Sunday, March 8th at 1:30 am ET and 2 pm ET.

ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL SINGS IN NEW DOCUMENTARY Last year, members of St. Michael’s Choir School’s Senior Choir provided music for the documentary “Death or Canada” about the Irish immigration to Toronto amid great hardship. The documentary is set in 1847, shortly before St. Michael’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1848. “Death or Canada” reveals the incredible story of how Toronto survived and was shaped by the events that summer. Our choristers participated in the re-creation of a Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Power, the first Bishop of Toronto. The documentary will be broadcast on History Television on March 16th 2009 at 8 p.m. Please visit the film’s extensive website at www.deathorcanada.com for more information.

TENEBRAE MUSIC: A ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL TRADITION Join the Senior Choir and Alumni of St. Michael's Choir School in this reflective service of readings, prayer and sacred music for Holy Week, featuring settings of the traditional Tenebrae responsories of Monsignor John Edward Ronan, founder of St. Michael's Choir School, and conducted by Dr. Jerzy Cichocki. Wednesday, April 8th 2009, 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Cathedral, 65 Bond Street. For details regarding Alumni rehearsals and Alumni Regional Tenebrae Services, please visit our website at www.smcs.on.ca or call 416-397-6367.

'Incredible girl' named Children's Miracle champion By LISA QUEEN February 18, 2009 5:34 PM www.insidetoronto.com

Over and over again on Tuesday, giggling classmates came over to give Patricia Espin-Jurado a hug and tell her how lucky she is. As her friends gathered around her in the library of York's St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, the 10-year-old North York girl could finally consider herself lucky. After all, the Grade 5 student was named one of this year's 12 ambassadors as part of the Champions Across Canada program with the Children's Miracle Network, which raises funds for children's hospitals across North America, including Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. As a champion representing Sick Kids Hospital, Patricia will meet other child ambassadors when she travels to Ottawa and Walt Disney World in Florida this spring. Meanwhile, John Lombardi, manager of the Wal-Mart store at Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue, handed the smiling girl a $1,000 gift card and named her honorary store manager. Wal-Mart Canada is a sponsor of the Champions Across Canada program. But Patricia hasn't

always been a lucky child. Shortly after her birth in Ecuador, she began exhibiting strange symptoms. Her family sought help from local doctors, but while a pediatrician believed a liver ailment could be putting the baby's life in jeopardy, no one was able to treat her. Because Patricia's father was a Canadian citizen, the family flew to Toronto so the little girl could be seen at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Patricia was diagnosed with Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the liver, heart and other systems of the body. It can be fatal if left untreated. According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, symptoms include abnormalities in the cardiovascular system, the spinal column, the eyes and the kidneys and a narrowing of the blood vessels connecting the heart to the lungs. Patricia has had three major surgeries at Sick Kids, the first at the age of eight months. Initially, she was able to return to Ecuador but the family finally moved to Toronto permanently when she was two-years-old as her condition worsened. Three years ago, medication Patricia was taking was no longer effective and her liver began to fail. She received a life-saving transplant in 2007. Despite the hardships in her life, Patricia was all smiles at Tuesday's event.

"It means a lot to me (to be named a champion). I feel so proud to represent Sick Kids, They help them (patients) live again, laugh again and smile," said Patricia, who dreams of becoming a teacher, a nurse or a famous horseback riding champion. Doctors have credited her positive attitude and bubbly nature with helping her medical progress. Stefanie McPherson, development officer with the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, said Patricia exemplifies the true spirit of what it means to be a champion. "She's an incredible girl with a positive spirit," she said. "She is strong-willed, determined and never gives up."

This project addressed four goals: to enhance the assessment/intervention process; to build teacher capacity, to support students’ literacy skills, and to create sustainability. At St. Augustine, project highlights include: completion of reflective questionnaires by teachers to guide the team; an increase in special services time allocations at the school; several in-services for staff; the use of the Individual Student Profile (ISP) by teachers at meetings; and coverage for formal feedback meetings between special services staff and teachers. St. Augustine is one of the four OPA pilot schools which include Precious Blood, St. Stephen and D’Arcy McGee. The Association has extended the funding for this pilot project to August 2009. SUBJECT: 10-5 St. Denis Intermediate Students Get Immersed in French On Wednesday February 4th , the grade 7 and 8 students from St. Denis Catholic School participated in their first ever language exchange to Quebec. Students were matched by SEVEC Youth Exchanges Canada with a twin from St. Romuald, Quebec. For an entire week, the core French students lived with their twin’s family creating connections with their French counterpart just in time for Carnival in Quebec City across the bridge from the school. The students also participated in cultural and winter events planned by the twin teacher Monique Maranda at L’école Secondaire l’Aubier. The students of St. Denis are continuing their pen-pal relationship and will do so until they meet again May 20th at which time the students get to host their twin in The Beach for a week filled with activities planned by their French teacher Jennie Valentim and Intermediate teachers Trinka Brine & Brenda Bellini.

2009 FEBRUARY > CULINARY NETWORKING NIGHT SNAP ETOBICOKE MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2009

On Tuesday, January 20th, the Village of Islington's newly-opened culinary academy, Cirillo's, played host to Les Toques Blanche ("The White Hats"). Les Toques Blanche is a monthly event where those from the culinary world - chefs, restaurateurs, food suppliers - gather together to catch up with each other and discuss what's happening in the industry. As the guests mingled, hospitality students from Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School were busy preparing a meal that included shrimp, scallops, mussels and more. It was a delightful evening that allowed old

acquaintances to reunite, the potential future of the industry to show off their talents, and all those in attendance to experience the culinary gem that Chef John Cirillo has brought to the community.

POET MICHELLE MUIR VISITS LIBERMANN DURING AFRICAN CANADIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Teacher, poet, and spoken word artist Michelle Muir captivated an audience of two hundred grade ten students at Francis Libermann Catholic High School on February 17, 2009, as part of African Canadian Heritage Month activities. Michelle Muir told the audience, “Black history is everyone’s history.” She showed students that history is an important influence on her poetry. She brought along music and books by the legendary singer Bob Marley and one of her favourite love poets, Tupac Shakur.

One could hear a pin drop when Michelle read her evocative poem, “My Fantastic Voyage to Planet Irresistible.” This poem won the CBC Radio Poetry Face Off in 2006. Michelle is currently working on her first book of poetry that is due out in the fall of 2009. The presentation concluded with a sample of “Def Poetry,” produced by hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons. The clip, “What Teachers Make,” starring Taylor Mali, left the audience with something to think about as they left the cafeteria.

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

HEAD CARETAKER PRE-QUALIFYING TEST PROCESS

Appendix C of the collective agreement between CUPE Local 1280 and the Board states that “Pre-qualified List A and Pre-qualified List B shall be such list of bargaining unit members that have pre-qualified, by such selection process that may be in effect from time to time, for posted Head Caretaker vacancies in Category A and Category B schools respectively.” The Operations Department and CUPE Local 1280 have agreed on the following pre-qualifying process.Employees wishing to pre-qualify for a Head Caretaker posting will be required to write pre-qualifying test(s). No exceptions will be made. Testing will occur approximately every six months.

Tests will be based on the Seneca College Heating 701 course and/or the Seneca College BESII course manuals, and/or the current Head Caretaker Manual. There will be four tests (see registration form). Please review the following points carefully:

• Assistant Caretakers registering to write the pre-qualifying test(s) will be obliged to write 2 tests: 1) the general Head Caretaker test and 2) the Head Caretaker Mechanical test. Employees registering to write these tests must attach a copy of their Heating 701 certificate or Building Operator certificate to the registration form.

• Assistant Caretakers may apply to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the Head Caretaker BESII Mechanical test, but must attach a copy of their completed BES certificate with the registration form.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category A schools (codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) who wish to pre-qualify for Category B schools (codes 7, 8, 9 and 9+) will be required to write the General Head Caretaker test and the Head Caretaker Mechanical test.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category A schools who wish to pre-qualify for Category A or B schools requiring BESII will be required to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the BESII Mechanical test. Employees registering to write this test must attach a copy of their completed BES II certificate to the registration form.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category B schools who wish to pre-qualify for BES II schools will be required to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the BESII Mechanical test. Employees registering to write this test must attach a copy of their completed BES II certificate to the registration form.

The passing mark for all tests will be 65%. Employees must pass both tests to be short listed. Employees will be advised of the results of their test scores by letter.

Employees will be eligible to re-write the test when the next test session is confirmed. However, each time an employee wishes to re-write the pre-qualifying test, they will need to register by the deadline date for that specific testing session. Human Resources will not keep lists of employees who do not pre-qualify or who wish to re-write.

If employees request to re-write the pre-qualifying test, the new test score will be the test score used from that point forward – even if it is lower than the previous test score. If an employee’s test results indicate that they have pre-qualified, their name, seniority date and the test results will be kept on a spreadsheet to be used when Head Caretaker positions are posted.

The pre-qualifying spreadsheet will be kept by the Human Resources department and is strictly confidential. Employees’ test results will be filed in the employee file within the Operations department and will be strictly confidential. Pre-qualified employees will be short listed to August 31, 2009. At that time, the process will be evaluated, and Union/Management will determine if the short list will be extended. If extended, due to changing technology and its impact on our schools, 3 years has been determined as a probable suitable short list period. Once the 3-year period expires, employees will be required to re-write the test(s).

Pre-qualified employees who bid on Head Caretaker positions after May 1, 2007 will continue to be subject to the current posting/interview award process (seniority issues, any specific qualification/experience required as noted in the posting, successful positive recommendation from the SQS, test score, good attendance record, etc.)
