Rumble Sheet 3 April 2018

From the desk of the CAO… Happy April everyone. Spring has finally sprung and we can forget what that old grumpy groundhog had to say not too long ago.

This past month Village Council gave final reading to Boulevard Maintenance Bylaw No. 645, 2018. Essentially what this Bylaw says is that property owners within the municipality are now responsible to maintain their boulevard between the street and their property line (mowing, etc.). For many years this work has been completed by our public works department, which is highly unusual. We would be hard pressed to find another municipality in the Province that provides this service. This change in operational procedure will enable public works to focus its efforts on other important projects around the community. I suspect some in our community may have questions about how these changes will affect them. Our municipal staff are always available to answer those and any other questions you may have.

I’m sure many of you have heard the incredible news that Port Alice has been awarded grant funding in the amount of $499,000 from the Rural Dividends Program (“Special Considerations” component) to upgrade our public marina at Rumble Beach. The total value of the project is estimated at $650,000. Staff put together an incredible grant application to the Province describing the need to diversify our economy, in light of the current mill closure. Design plans of the project are available for viewing at the Village office. They will also be made available on our web site. In addition to earthworks, asphalt paving, parking delineation and changes to how the boat launch is accessed, the project will include an amenity building. Municipal Council has yet to definitively determine what will be incorporated in the building. It is equally important to note that this project is ready to proceed to construction phase. We expect to put this project out to public tender in April.

Well that’s about it for this month………

If you have any comments, questions or concerns with my monthly report or anything related to municipal operations, please drop by to see me. My door is always open to you, the citizens of our amazing community. Paul Carver, Chief Administrative Officer

Rumble Sheet 7 April 2018

April begins the final stretch of another school year. What a year of rich learning this has been – and there are still

many learning experiences left in the remaining three months of the school year.

April is the month of our district and regional Science Fairs. At Sea View, we choose to focus on either Science or

Heritage Fair learning in alternate years. Although 2017-2018 was a Heritage Fair year, individual students who

would like to participate in the Science Fair may do so by preparing a project on their own time. The Regional

Science Fair will take place at the Civic Centre in Port Hardy on April 18 and 19.

For the first time, ten Sea View students will be attending and participating in a regional Heritage Fair in Port

Alberni on May 4. This is an exciting new learning opportunity for students that has grown out of our own

School-Community Heritage Fair. Congratulations to those children who were selected after meeting with Shelley

Harding of BC Heritage Fairs.

April also means swimming lessons! All students will be travelling to Port Hardy for five weekly swimming lessons

in April and May. A special learning event is planned for each of the school afternoons following swimming lessons;

when students return to school they will be engaging in the following events - and parents & siblings are invited to

all five!

Tuesday, April 10 Live Performance by Alex Zerbe @ 2pm

Tuesday, April 17 Family Math Afternoon, 1:30-2:30 Learn many new numeracy games!

Tuesday, April 24 Family Literacy Afternoon, 1:30-2:30 Reading workshop for parents of pre- and beginning

readers, plus literacy-based activities for all ages!

Tuesday, May 1 Family STEAM Afternoon, 1:30-2:30 Join us for some multi-age Science, Technology,

Engineering, Art & Math projects!

Tuesday, May 8 Live Performance by Speed Control @ 1:30 pm

And, of course, April marks a variety of learning projects centred around gardening, composting, and beekeeping.

The daffodil bulbs that were planted in the fall are now blooming, the rhubarb is re-awakening, and we have

already had our first taste of fresh chives and parsley from the school gardens…

Spring has sprung! Enjoy the season,

Mrs. Heather Johnson
