WINTER MAINTENANCE POLICY 2012-2013 Winter Season

During the 2012/2013 winter season, please be aware that the Village of Port Alice does not remove snow and/or ice from the public sidewalks in the village.

When the sidewalks and/or footbridges are covered with snow and/or ice they are very slippery. Please use extreme caution when walking on them. Under the policy the Public Works Crew is directed to clear the footbridges only , and only after the major roads and streets have been cleared.

We regret this inconvenience brought on by forces of nature, and remind you to use extreme caution when using the sidewalks and footbridges during the winter, and that you are doing so at your own risk.

This notice is published in accordance with Village of Port Alice Sidewalk & Footbridge Maintenance Policy Code No. 4.3.b.

Beverage containers (soft drinks or spirits) sold in B.C. include a deposit charge that is refunded when the container is returned for recycling. Encorp Pacific (Canada) is the industry product stewardship corpora-tion mandated to develop and manage the system to recover these used consumer products for recycling. The “Return-It” depot system collects on behalf of more than 1000 beverage brand owners. Refunds range from $0.05 to $0.20 depending on the container size and contents (soft drink or spirits) Virtually all types of beverage containers can be returned for refund: PLASIC BOTTLES Plastic soft drink and water bottles including coolers, juices and some spirits ALUMINUM CANS The most commonly used container. Please leave the tabs on POLYCOAT CONTAINERS Drink boxes and coated gable top cartons BAG-IN-BOX CONTAINERS Large “bags” of wine in a cardboard carton. Both bag and box must be returned. Single service pouches

are also in this category. GLASS BOTTLES Juice and beverage bottles, as well as wine, spirits, imported beer and coolers. OTHER METAL CANS Any metal beverage container (non-aluminum) ranging from small single serve tins to large tomato and

apple juice cans WHERE CAN YOU RECYCLE? In Port McNeill at the Island Foods warehouse In Port Hardy at the Kinsmen Return-It centre You can return empty containers where purchased. All alcohol containers must be rinsed. Donate to a worthy cause (school, minor hockey etc.) Drop off at the recycling depot. (your donation is appreciated) 80% of beverage containers sold in the province are recovered and recycled into something new. That’s over 1 billion containers kept our of our landfills. HOW ARE THEY USED ? Aluminum cans are back on the shelf again as new cans within six weeks. Plastic bottles are turned into new bottles and buckets. Glass is used in the manufacturing of a variety of things such as fibreglass insulation and sandblasting material. Non-aluminum cans can be made into hundreds of products such as rebar and car parts. Polycoated containers (drink boxes) are hydra-pulped and turned into tissue and cardboard boxes.

Give Mother Nature a hand by recycling your beverage containers. PORT ALICE RECYCLING SOCIETY

Did you know that what we call Port Alice today is not the original site of Port Alice? Evelyn and friends will share exciting information about Spry Camp, Jeune Landing, and the “good old days” of Old Port Alice. Part 3: Did you know the area of present day Port Alice used to be called Rumble Beach? RECYCLE FOR SIGHT AND HEARING PROGRAM

The Port Alice Lions Club is collecting used eye glasses – lenses, frames, or both, and used hearing aids. These are refurbished and

sent to third world countries for distribution, by opticians, to people in need who are unable to afford to buy these items.

Collection boxes are located in the Village Office and FP Foods. For further information, contact Audie Tamburini at 250 284-6663

Thank You. Your unwanted glasses and hearing aids will help someone to

see and hear better.
