PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGESeptember 13th will be a lucky day for aPCA member, indeed, as a PCA sweep-stakes drawing will give away a 2006 911Club Coupe. You have until September12th to enter via the PCA website.(www.pca.org ) The site lists thisPorsche as a “Limited Production” createdespecially for PCAmembers with“astounding” 381 hp,“sinewy” 306 ft/ lbtorque, a SportsChrono Plus that“excites the visualsenses” and “config-ured with the specifi-cations a true enthusi-ast would choose in a911”. Wow! Soundsgood to me; and, ifchosen, I accept. (Thetax bill notwithstand-ing)

But wait, there will beanother 48 similarcars available for pur-chase (MSPR$99,911) to PCAmembers selected on a random drawingbasis. Actually, you’ll receive a“Negotiation Opportunity” to arm wrestleover price with your local dealer. Whetherthis new 911CC is popular enough to turn aprofit on a flip sale over eBay or notremains to be seen, but the idea of a spe-cial, limited Porsche started me wonderingabout other differentiated cars I have seenon the road. A few minutes of research(Googling) uncovered all kinds of specials, limiteds, designers, editions, series andwhatnots identifying cars sold by everymanufacturer over the years.

Buick had a Special in 1936 and a LimitedRiviera in 1958. A starring role as GeneralLee in the Dukes of Hazard distinguishedDodge’s 1969 Charger from the rest of themuscle cars. Volvo offered a Bertonecoupe with a chopped vinyl top in 1979.Ford’s Eddie Bauer Series Explorer hit the

soccer fields in 1991. Honda rolled out itsSpecial Edition in 2000. Remember theLincoln Continental Bill Blass Model? Isaw one on Colfax last week with its sharplooking white and blue coordinated colorscheme. Although one fender was nowprimer red, it still looked…well….Special.

Porsche has also introduced its special edi-tions over the years. In 2004 the Boxster SSpecial Edition was available with 266 hp,lowered sports suspension, PSM, cocoabrown leather and a commemorativebadge. In 1993 Porsche celebrated the30th year of the 911 by producing 911Celebration Models. 1988 was time for thePorsche’s Silver AnniversaryCommemorative model in Diamond BlueMetallic and silver blue leather with FerryPorsche signature headrests. Just a yearearlier the 1987 Club Sport LightweightEdition provided enthusiasts anotherchoice. What a cool look we had on theSlant Nose and Speedster models. Manymore unique Porsches were a result of fac-tory racing programs and engineeringexcellence. Movie roles also abound. Didyou ever notice the Porsches inFlashdance, Top Gun, Risky Business or

Cellular? (For a good list of cars in moviesgo to: www.imcdb.org ). Finally, many ofthe unique, daily driven Porsches are aresult of owners carefully perusing the fac-tory’s option list, and selecting perform-ance, comfort and style options that suittheir tastes, if not their checkbooks.

Speaking of limited, thatalso describes my knowledgeof special model Porsches.Fortunately, RMR has sever-al members with really greatexperience and insight intocollecting Porsches. Theyknow why a model is histori-cally important, mechanical-ly significant, financiallygifted or designed well. They will be sharing theirthoughts and cars with us inthe newsletter over the nextfew months in collector arti-cles. Also, those of you withan interesting Porsche in thegarage or barn are invited tosend Rex a photo and write-up for the newsletter.Having an RMR member tell

us about their special cars will add a per-sonal viewpoint we can all relate to.

By the way, the 2006 911 Club Coupe ispainted an exclusive Azurro Californiablue, its interior is a special bi-colorleather, and it has a PCA badge.

PS. At Summer’s end, RMR still has sev-eral events left on the calendar. Don’t bestuck under the shade tree too long. Bringyour special Porsche to an autocross, a touror a drivers’ education event. RMR eventsare like a good car collection, alwaysimproved with one more member joiningin.

EEVENTVENT CCALENDARALENDARThanks to everyone who have sent stories and pictures. It suremakes my life a lot easier than trying to find content to fill thenewsletter. The biggest problem I have is trying to find space foreverything. I hate to leave anything out. There sure are a lot worseproblems to have. So keep those cards and letters coming.

July and August were busy months. Between AMR and RMRevents there was something almost every weekend. The paceslacks off a little in September, then picks back up again in October.

The Club Race in Pueblo is a great opportunity for new members toget involved in a wheel to wheel racing event. It takes lots of vol-unteers to make the race work. On the race weekend, we need peo-ple to work corners, pick up and deliver equipment, help with lunchand refreshments, and lots of gofers. No experience is required formost assignments. I would love it if you just came down and tookpictures. Or interview some of the drivers and pit crew and submita story. (You can see I have a one track mind when it comes tothese events.) So come on down and enjoy the action.

The morning of July 23 dawned bright andsunny at the Continental Divide Racewayas nearly seventy drivers brought theirPorsches for two days of rescheduled funat the challenging little track near Mead. What a difference eleven weeks made inthe weather in Colorado! Instead of get-ting snowed out as we did in our first sea-sonal attempt at this track on April 30, wegot into triple digit temperatures this timearound. The hot weather remained overboth days of the Challenge Series drivereducation event “Ride the Slide atContinental Divide, Part Deux”. With thehelp of a lot of ice water, everyone persist-ed until the eagerly-anticipated “beer thir-ty” at the end of each day.

A considerable number of the drivers inattendance had never driven at CDRbefore, but there were enough instructorsto meet all of the needs for showing thenewbies the unique features of this track.

The raceway had a significantly enhancedappearance this year, with all buildingsfreshly painted, grass mowed, and fewproblems with the track surface. As thosewho have driven CDR know, this track, while a lot of fun, can be unforgiving. Asis frequently the case, the fabled “Dragon”tried its best to satisfy its craving forPorsches. Aside from a few minor nips, itremained unfulfilled. Time trials onSunday afternoon went without incident.Susan Bucknam and Keny Whitright hadbest times of the day.

It is fair to say that a good time was had byall. The event was a success because ofthe willing contributions of all the partici-pants. Even most of the driving instructorsjumped into the club truck to do cornerworking duties for a shift or two whenneeded! Particular thanks go to ChrisSulley for getting the club truck and equip-

ment up from Second Creek, RogerZimmerman for taking care of the equip-ment at the track, Norma Nada for registra-tion, Chris and Jamey Wening for organiz-ing corner workers, Pat Newman andSusan Bucknam for working Control,David Rossiter for serving as ChiefDriving Instructor, Randy Hoch for servingas Safety officer, Amy Legg-Rogers forworking the morning gate for long hoursand for helping with the refreshments,Cecil Morris for organizing pre-tech, DaveSpeights and Tom Yarbrough for doingtech inspections, Joe Warren for taking onthe responsibilities of top-tech, BobSpeights and Susan Bucknam for Timing,Ron Maxwell as Observer, Andy Laboutfor helping grid during time trials, andKent Early for working as Starter. Get out your crayons and/or highlightersand mark your calendar for the Last, NeverSay Never, Final DE at Second Creek. Asyou all are aware, the use permit for SCRwill not, under any circumstances, berenewed for 2006 so this is your lastchance to set that perfect lap. Since this isour last ever visit we’re going to give youthe chance to run both directions.Clockwise on Saturday and Anti-Clockwiseon Sunday.

Commemorative T-shirts will be availableto mark the occasion. These will be whitelong sleeve T’s with appropriate artwork. The shirts are $20 if you register beforeSaturday October 8th, so do not wait to getyour registration in ASAP. If there isenough demand, we may commission asecond run of shirts for the procrastinators. If we do, the shirt price will be higher @$25.There will be a strict 124 car limit andsince this is the absolutely last time we willhosting a DE at Second Creek, we doexpect this event to be extremely popular.Again, get those registrations in early.

Contrary to the scaremongering perpetratedby our European contingent in the Augustnewsletter, no snow has been ordered for

this event. In fact I, at great personal cost, have ordered bright sunny skies with tempsin the low to mid 80’s. I just hope myweather gal delivers like she promised!

Well it is that time of year to think abouthow we are going to end the summer driv-ing season. Like last year, we are onceagain planning an October drive in thesouthern Colorado mountains- with anadded bonus, dinner at La Petite MaisonRestaurant in Colorado Springs. LaPetite Maison has been a Colorado Springsfixture for 28 years, and is owned by PCAmember Henri Chaperont. We are organiz-ing a great drive in the mountains with afew stops at points of interest along theway-including a winery. We are not limit-ing the number of cars, however, becausethe restaurant can only accommodate 40people we will have to limit the dinnerparticipation to that number, So pleaseregister as soon as possible to secure aspot!

For those of you who joined us last yearand had a blast, our intent is to make thisyear’s drive as good - if not better, thanever. The cost for this year is $35.00 percar. Dinner is an extra $32 per person allinclusive. You may do just the tour or bothif you prefer. Please send your registrationforms to Diana Pool indicating your pref-erence. 6746 Fowler Drive, Colorado Springs,Colorado 80922.

October 15, 9:30am. Tour begins at Steveand Janet Wright's home. Address andmap will be in the next (October) newslet-ter article.

Dear Tom and Ray: A late ‘90s specialedition Porsche was driven down a ramp.At the end of the ramp are two speedbumps, 2 feet apart. The first bump ismade of concrete and the second is hardrubber.

Neither is more than 2.5 inches high at thecenter. The concrete bump is about 8 inch-es wide, and the rubber one is about 12inches wide.

After the bumps is the sidewalk, then thestreet. The owner of the car is claimingthe valet parkers drove his Porsche too fastover the speed bumps, causing $10,000 indamage to his engine. He claims the bot-tom of the Porsche hit the bumps, causingthe oil pan to separate or loosen from theengine, which led to an oil leak. Pleasetell me if this is possible, and if the cost ofrepair is reasonable.

--Hadi

Tom: Oh, you’re in deep doo-doo, Hadi.Yes, it IS possible to drive a Porsche downa circular garage ramp at 60 mph and thenscrape the oil pan on a couple of speedbumps. But I bet it was fun?

Ray: Actually, it can happen at a lot lessthan 60 mph. The Porsche has such lowground clearance that the problem mighthave been the angle of descent, and thefact that there were two speed bumps.

Tom: Right. When it hit the first, itbounced up, and the springs compressed. But then it came down just as you were

driving over the second bump, and that’swhen the oil pan took a hit.

Ray: The problem is, you weren’t goingfast enough, Hadi. Had you stepped on it alittle more, you could have cleared the sec-ond bump completely!

Tom: Actually, if you drove it over thebumps at a reasonable speed – say, lessthan 5 mph –and damage was still done, then I’d say it’s not your fault. Then itwould be the fault of the manufacturer, who made a car that can’t be driven in nor-mal public facilities. Or it would be thefault of the guy who bought it, whoshould’ve warned you that it can’t be driv-en over bumps.

Ray: And is it a reasonable price for therepairs? Well, let’s see. An oil pan for anormal car costs about $400. So…$10,000for a Porsche sounds about right! Weshould add that while it’s possible that theengine was ruined by the method youdescribe, it’s by no means the only expla-nation. It’s possible the owner of the carscraped up the bottom of the car himself.Or that no ones’s at fault, and the panfailed over time, and he’s just looking forsomeone to blame.

Tom: But if you know that you, or one ofyour guys, drove it too fast, felt an impactand heard a thunk or a metallic scrapingsound when you hit the speed bumps, thenyou guys probably toasted it.

Ray: So call your insurance company,Hadi.

16 September 2005 l RMR Porsche

Like many guys, I fell in love withPorsches at a young age. I had alwaysthought they were cool cars, but I was 13years old when the love really began. Thatsummer in the early 80’s a colonel in thearmy moved in next door. He had justcome back from being stationed inGermany, where he had met a Porscheexecutive. His acquaintance with thePorsche executive had allowed him toacquire one of the first 944s in the US.There is no doubt about it, it was a beauti-ful car, but it was his two 911s that I fell inlove with. If I was the man then that I amnow, I’d be embarrassed to tell you that Idon’t know any details about the cars, but Iwas a boy and all I knew was that theywere the coolest looking carsever. My neighbor, moved inless than a year, and took hisbeautiful cars with him. Inever got to ride in one ofthose Porsches, or even sit inone, but the dream was seeded.

A year later, I got my first ridein a Porsche. A friend of myparents gave me a ride acrosstown in his 914. It was notwhat one dreams of, I was sit-ting on someone’s lap in thepassenger seat, but it was amemorable experience because, of course,it was a Porsche.

Over the next few years I was always look-ing for articles in magazines aboutPorsches. Articles about stock Porschesand ones about modified Porsches. Whilereading these magazines, I formed myopinions about Porsches and modifications, which are still pretty much the same today.Whale tails and wide fenders, Oh Yeah.Slant nose 911, looks cool, but I’ll pass. There was the wild, a cabriolet with arefrigerator in the back, impressive feat, but what’s the point. Then came the carthat had me reading about its stats over andover and staring at pictures and cutout dia-grams. The 959, I couldn’t get enough onthis car, it not only had the incredible

Porsche look, but was an engineering mas-terpiece.

During that same period in the mid-'80s, Igot my driver’s license and began to trulyunderstand performance. My sister and Ishared two vehicles, a 1966 VolkswagenBug with a sunroof, and a 1972 Chevypickup with a modified 400 small block. The bug actually had a little bit of a coolfactor and was fun to drive because it wasso agile, but it was the pickup, with morepower than a teenager should have, that gotme in minor trouble sometimes. Strangely,I think this combination of a fun littlePorsche predecessor and a powerhouse, fedmy Porsche dream.

Fast forward through an engineeringdegree and a few years of work. Porschehad created the Boxster. Not quite the 911that I’d dreamed of, but clearly a great carand more affordable. I had been looking atads for used Boxsters in the paper for acouple years, when I decided to go to thedealer “just to see if I’d fit inside.” At6’3”, it was a valid question that ended upcosting me a lot of money. The dealer hadonly one Boxster, and it was sitting right inthe middle of the showroom floor. I sat inthe 2001 Zanzibar Red Porsche, raised thetop (I fit), looked at the interior a little, andthen started to walk out. I heard a voice,“Do you want to test drive it?” and before Icould answer, the salesman was waving hisarms, people moved the other cars out of

the way, and the Boxster was sitting out-side. How could I not drive it? Once Idrove it, how could I not buy it? I had mydream car, my Porsche.

My dream car quickly became a nightmare. Two months later I got laid off from myjob, and another month later, I ran intoanother car while avoiding someone run-ning a red light. I was devastated. Twodays later I found out that while beingtowed to the body shop, an uninsuredmotorist hit my car again. Four monthslater and deductible payments for two acci-dents that weren’t my fault, I had myPorsche back.

A few months later, I took part inmy first PCA event, a DE (Driver’sEducation) at 2nd Creek. Learningto drive that car as hard as it wasmeant to be driven, what an adren-aline rush. I was hooked. Overthen next two years, I did as manyDEs as I could schedule in andafford to do. PCA and DEs hadbecome the best part of owning aPorsche.

I made it through my long unem-ployment and managed to keep myPorsche, but I accumulated too

much debt. It soon became clear that Iwouldn’t be able to dig out of the hole Iwas in, so I half-heartedly listed my car forsale. It took months and I turned downseveral offers, but I sold my 2001 ZanzibarRed Porsche Boxster yesterday. I literallycried as my wife drove me away. I’malmost embarrassed to admit the emotionalattachment I had with an object, but I trulyloved that car, my first Porsche love. Rightnow, I can’t imagine loving another asmuch as that Boxster.

My finances will allow me to get a 944, sonow it’s time to look for my next Porschelove. Will it be as great, only time willtell, but the first love is always special.

Watkins Glen International Road CourseJune 2005

In 1948, a group of local businessmenheaded by Cameron Argetsinger, staged thefirst postwar road race in the United States.Contested on the roadways surrounding thebucolic hamlet of Watkins Glen at thesouth end of Lake Seneca in the FingerLakes region of New York, they began atradition which put “The Glen” on themap. Over the ensuing years it would playhost to virtually every form of motor rac-ing; Formula One, Formula 5000, Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR, and for the last 4years, PCA Club Racing.

The present track, laid out on a hilly loca-tion above town, was constructed in 1956as a 2.3 mile permanent road course whichwas then expanded to its present 3.4mileconfiguration in 1971.

I grew up going to the Glen and enjoyedwatching Jackie Stewart clinch an F-1World Championship and the likes of PeterGregg and Hurley Haywood win the Trans-Am during the annual Six Hour EnduranceRace. In ’77, our own Bob Hagestadteamed with Haywood to place their 911Turbo RSR a strong 3rd place overall inthe event while winning Tran-Am honors.

So there we were, 10 Rocky MountainRegion racers plus 1 DE driver, up for thechallenge of a three day event on a newtrack. Many of us drove the Thursday DEin an effort to whack away at the steeplearning curve that we faced. I took a local

instructor along for the first session – hismain remark, “the concrete is your friend.Use it for grip wherever you can”, referringto the patches of concrete that were foundin most turns where the G-forces had tornaway mere asphalt. And sure enough, it isone fast puppy! On the front straight nearlyflat out in 4th (think SC gearing) the trackdrops into the fast, 3rd gear, banked turnone. Quickly you are back up into 4th forthe uphill entry to the esses – a bluecanyon of Armco barrier – press it downand hold – make no sudden inputs –thread it up and over the blind entry to theback straight – track out and hit 5th for theback straight – brake hard, hit 3rd , slashthrough the bus stop chicane then dive intoa devilish downhill right-hander that hadmy toes curling up inside my driving shoesas one side of my mind willed my foot tothe floor and the other resisted. Back into4th for the wild downhill ride into “TheBoot”. Take 3rd for the latish left as youenter “the Laces” – carousel your waythrough the 3rd gear “Toe”, the car clawingfor grip. Out you go into the “Heel” and aquick right up to the multiple-entry “off-camber” left that runs back to the quickleft-right combo leading onto the mainstraight. Lots of rhythm, no 2nd gearturns, and a wide, smooth track that wouldmake 2 and even 3-wide racing possible ifnot comfortable. At the end of the day,Richard Stribling’s broad smile told me itwas all worth it for him to have driven allthe way from Colorado for two days of

DE.

Friday it was down to business. Clean lapswere hard to come by as some sixty carsfilled each of the 4 run groups. Over 220cars had signed up for this event – a fullpaddock. Even your friends were hard tolocate.

The locals know their track. DE is avail-able often at the Glen as many east coastPCAregions cue up for weekends. No problemthough for young David Stribling; whofound speed early and by the time the FunRace came around was running right upfront, on Kumho’s no less. Unfortunately, his date with a new set of Hoosier’s wouldnot take place as minor wall contact endedhis weekend prematurely – a pity. BillPetty and Paul Gutowski were alsoinvolved in car-to-car contact in their FunRace but the stewards ruled that anotherdriver had precipitated the incident. Pauland “Teflon” Bill would race through theweekend.

Friday night we enjoyed one of the greattraditions of Watkins Glen – hanging outwith fellow racers at the Seneca LodgeBar, truly a place for the ages. Photos ofMark Donahue and Roger Penske hungamongst an ungodly and totally garish col-lection of race memorabilia that defiesdescription. We made many new friendsthat night at the expense of quite a fewbrain cells. Bill Petty had an old NewYork buddy up for the event and I had sev-eral friends and my brother along for the

19September 2005 l RMR Porsche

experience. Bob and Deb Polich and MikeMartin joined in the fun. The weekend wasjust getting started….

Saturday dawned clear and cool. We madea quick stop for coffee, ice, and a newspa-per on the way to the track. Little WatkinsGlen was covering our race with a frontpage photo and interviews inside – wow!Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore!

Qualifying was a bit frustrating, at least forme. A busy and lengthytrack made it difficult toput down that one flyinglap that we all seek. Mostof us stayed out and ran thewhole session looking forspace. No matter, I decidedto make up for it on thestart!

Even our driver’s meetingwas an over-the-top affairwith 300+ folks getting thegospel according to ChiefSteward, Bryan Henderson, who took amoment to introduce European Supercupand Rolex 24 champ Wolf Henzler to thecrowd. Wolf would drive a Farnbacher-Loles Cup car in the sprint race and co-drive a pair of them in the 90 minuteEnduro on Sunday.

Our sprint races saw mixed results for theRMR bunch:

Group 1 – Bob Polich - finished a verycredible 9th overall and 8th in F (out of34), Dale Tuety – 7th in I class, JohnSkovgaard – short on practice and back in23rd in F – he would improve! Then therewas my result – a sterling 64th overall – Iretired the car when my new Longacreconvex mirror fell out of its frame on lap 6leaving me afraid to turn-in anywherethinking I would take myself and someoneelse into the wall. Better luck in theEnduro!

Group 2 – Michael Martin finds the kittylitter at the chicane – he’s a tow-out andthe first car out of his race. He was stillsmiling at dinner somehow!

Group 3 – Paul Gutowski and Bill Petty –4th and 7th overall respectively with fine3-4 finishes out of a field of 14 GT3S cars.Kim Gutowski comes in 2nd in GT2S –sweet!

Group 4 – Chris Cervelli brings his GTC3car up to 2nd behind pro Leh Keen in afield of 26 strong entries while Chris’s sta-ble mate Andy Wilzoch claims second inGTA. These guys are for real!

A fine dinner served in the posh “GlenClub” highlighted our Saturday evening.Zone One works so hard to put on a greatrace weekend. We were treated to greatfood, wine, and gifts as we watched thesun set over the esses.

Sunday – Enduro time. Race fans paidtheir way in to see three 90 minute races inwhat would become a crash-filled after-noon. Saturday’s mild mannered race daygave way to more carnage than I have everseen. At least 6 cars were totaled in mostlyone-car incidents. The unforgiving Armcomade pinballs out of several fine racecars.Bill Petty watched in wonder as a tire part-ed company with a wrecked car in front ofhim and crashed off the hood of NationalPresident Tom Bobbit’s Cup Car. OurEnduro was marked by two lengthy full-course cautions while a team of severaldozen track workers replaced the nastyblue steel and re-stacked tire walls. Onlythe fast group survived this fate.

My luck was surely due to change. After agreat start, both Bob Polich and I hadmoved up into the top dozen or so, and

picked up places from there. We pittedtogether for our mandatory 5 minute stopsright after the last full-course yellow.Unfortunately, an arcane rule listed in theEnduro Protocol requires that all cars mustcomplete their stops prior to the last 5 min-utes of the race. But as our NationalScrutineer Walt Fricke pointed out, sincethe pits were closed during all full-courseyellows, we were unable to meet thisrequirement, coming back onto the trackwith about 3 minutes left. More than adozen of us including Dale Tuety were dis-qualified for this infraction. Our prettydecent drives were thus relegated to theback of the classification! John Skovgaarddrove steadily to a mid-pack finish to saveface for RMR.

Michael Martin would bounce back fromhis sprint race woes to take first in E and5th overall in his truncated enduro. Actionwas stopped shortly after an hour when atwo car incident wiped out enough Armcosteel to build a couple of Cayennes.

The final show was a field day forFarnbacher-Loles. The pro team’s prepara-tion was simply too much for a field thatincluded a much quicker 935. WolfHenzler teamed with Leh Keen of Georgiato win by 23 seconds. Henzler also co-drove the 4th place car! Chris Cervelli fin-ished on the tail of that entry for a greatfifth place finish. Andy Wilzoch was notfar behind in 7th and first in GTA. Kimand Paul Gutowski took first in GT2S intheir 993. A nice job by all of our racers. The sole retirement was Bill Petty whodeveloped cooling issues and trailered thecar after a handful of laps.

All of us enjoyed ourselves. My DNF andDQ were my worst results ever in ClubRacing but I, like the rest, really enjoyedthe people we met, the track; which wasspectacular, and the racing; that was hardbut fair. Worth the haul of 1,600miles?…….absolutely! Now if we can justget Stribling past the FunRace………hmm!
