Jim Thorburn President

PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

2018...A THING OF THE PASTSo, 2018 is now in the books, a thing

of the past. It was a great year. It is amazing how active our club is. RMR hosted seven high performance driver education (HPDE) events, a club race, three autocrosses, 17 social events, ten tours including a gimmick rally and a true off-road 4x4 on trails offering a technical element on more than just a graded dirt road.

Of course, 2018 was the 60th Anniversary of RMR. We had two special events. In June, we held our 60th Anniversary Celebration in Vail. While in Vail, we had a Friday reception, two tours on Saturday, and an evening dinner. We were honored by the attendance of Zone Rep Rich Sanders and PCA National Secretary Cindy Jacasin, who remarked that the weekend was basically a mini-Treffen.

The celebration continued into July, where RMR hosted a multi-day multi-region tour of western Colorado, the Grand Loop Tour. Twenty-seven cars left Denver on July 26th for a four-day, 1,000-mile tour travelling many of Colorado’s Scenic Byways.

Our year was concluded by a fantastic

60th Anniversary Holiday Party. Our chairs, Jane Hebert, Christine Walters, Arnette Schouten, and Carole Thero outdid themselves this year holding the annual party at Willow Ridge Manor in Morrison. Autoworks Colorado was our sponsor. Thanks, Autoworks!

Besides all the great food, drink and festivities, the highlight of our 60th Anniversary Holiday Party was the installation of the board. Past Presidents Kathy Fricke and Dale Thero presided over the pledge as the officers placed their hands on a 60th Anniversary Shirt (we forgot the Porsche shop manual). The pledge started with Kathy stating “I, state your name . . .” and suddenly everything went black. No, the board didn’t black out – the power went off to the building! Everybody was in the dark. Hopefully, it was not an omen of the year to come. Then suddenly, members started pulling their phones out of their pockets and purses. The LED’s came to life. Phones waving in the dark giving light to the room. I felt like I was having a flashback to an Elton John concert as he sang “Candles in the Wind.” We finished the pledge and went on to the door prizes.

The lights never came back on, but we had a great remainder of the evening. So, it will be remembered as the “night that the lights went out in RMR” (sorry Vicki Lawrence).

We also submitted a nomination to have RMR be PCA’s region of the year. You can see the nomination at this link https://www.scribd.com/document/396703833/RMR-PCA-Region-of-the-Year-Nomination. There was an amazing amount of work our volunteers did to make this year successful. The nomination gives a more detailed look at all successes of RMR in 2018.

I want to give John Mackin special thanks for all the great work he did in preparing this submission.

I’m proud to say that 2019 is looking like a banner year for RMR. We will have our driving events, socials, tours, guarantying smiles on the faces of all RMR members. I really look forward to being your President for 2019. See you soon!

CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING – MEET PEOPLE AND HELP OUT THE CLUBHello 2019! I hope everyone has a

wonderful New Year!

We are starting our year out in RMR tradition with our first social at 3R Racing! Stop by on Thursday, January 10th at 6 pm! There’s nothing better than a social gathering after the holidays to reconnect with your RMR friends! All you need to do is show up! Any way you can get there, just be there!

Also, later in January, you should try out some ice driving at our Eiskhana event! If you want to have more fun than a barrel of monkeys, this is one of those events! And you will have a big smile from ear to ear! Sign up now! Go to motorsportreg.com.

There are a few special things planned for this year, so take a look at our calendar and keep watch for the emails. Emails are our primary form of communication, so update your email address now on your PCA account to ensure you are up to date on the latest info.

We have achieved over 2,900 members in 2018! Thank you all for doing your part in helping us spread the word and growing our PCA membership! Will we grow to over 3,500 in 2019? Only time will tell! Don’t forget to add your significant other, son, daughter, brother, sister, etc., to your account if they join you often at RMR PCA events. (You must be at least 18 years of age to be added as a member or as an affiliate.) Please email Charlene Bleckley at the National Office: [email protected] to add your affiliate member now! (Unfortunately, I can’t add people to existing accounts.)

As we ramp up in the number of events in the next few months, please consider volunteering for an event or two over the course of the year! The club runs on volunteers. Don’t be shy! And if you are shy, it is a great way to meet people and help out the club! It is amazing; all the great people in the club with all the talent but only a limited number of people volunteer. Remember this:

The more volunteers there are the smaller the tasks will be and more free time to those working the event. Even being a cake server or a lunch organizer is a big help to the person or persons in charge of the entire event. No task is too small! Become more connected to the club and all its amazing members! Make it your New Year’s Resolution to volunteer with RMR PCA!

Cheers!

Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

May 18 An additional autocross is added for 2019!

INSTRUCTOR INSIGHTS

Well, here we are at the beginning of a new 2019 track season of DEs, autocrosses, the Ladies’ Day/Novice DE event, and our Club Race/Advanced Solo DE. Of course, we can’t forget about our first “Ice Social on Wheels” on Georgetown Lake on 20 Jan. With all that in mind, I thought it would be informative to the RMR membership to get “a feel” of the talent, ideas, etc. of the many volunteers that combine in bringing to the RMR membership a very enjoyable and rewarding track season experience to the regulars and novices

alike. So, I’ve included in this edition of HighGear, Dan Carlson’s “Insights” email that he sends out to the CDIs in December recapping the 2018 track season and highlighting the planning tactics needed to “Raise the Bar” ever higher in 2019.

So, read, digest, discuss, and come to a track event as a participant or spectator and enjoy!

— Tom Champion

I can’t believe it is mid-December! After just getting back from hitting the snow-covered slopes of Vail, it is time to crank out another edition of this informal newsletter to you, our “A Team” Instructors.

Like attacking the steep-and-deep Back Bowls, I’m just going to let it rip listing numerous items that come to mind.

The first order of business…your CDI team needs your nominations for RMR’s Most Improved Male and Female Drivers. Please send me an email with your nomination(s) and reasons by December 26 and I’ll share it with the rest of the CDIs. These awards will be presented at the January 10 Member Social at 3R Racing so we need to get these finalized.

This is the time of year we evaluate new Instructor candidates. Who do you recommend?

Our reigning Distinguished Driver Dale Hartzell won his second straight GTA Class National Championship! Way to go Dale!

Please share your suggested topics for the HighGear magazine Track Talk column and let me know if you’re willing to write something for it or for the magazine in general. I’m sure that you noticed Lynda Love’s contributions about track people in the publication this past year – well done and thank you Lynda!

Our relationship with the RMR Board is better than ever. They listen and constantly ask for input. We’re fortunate to have track rats Jim Thorburn, Vicki “CJ” Cox-Jones, Donna Helberg, John Mackin, and Brian Lay serving us. Vicki

is the Board officer that’s responsible for everything DE/Autocross. The Board recently had their joint meeting with the AMR leadership to collaborate on schedules and share best practices.

Brian “Lear Jet” Leary and Scott “Hendo” Henderson will once again lead DE/Autocross “101” at 3R Racing on Saturday morning, March 30. Talk it up with “newbie’s”/give your friends a nudge to attend and to start catching “the bug.”

We moved Ladies Day and the Novice DE to earlier in the season to prep new drivers for later events. Vicki Earnshaw has lined up PCA’s Panorama magazine to provide national coverage of this event! Note that we are still waiting confirmation of this date from the Colorado State Patrol Track – this is normal.

New Instructor Shirts

J.J. Collier is once again bringing his expertise in designing new instructor shirts – thanks J.J.! Our hope is to finalize the design by the end of January and start taking orders shortly thereafter so that we’d have them prior to next year’s driving season. It’s challenging finding good and reasonably priced cotton shirt stock particularly when considering long/short-sleeved, men’s/women’s, and Instructor/CDI options. Plus, we are working with National DE Chair John Krecek for going national with these. This is why the process is taking longer - stay tuned.

We’re trying to coordinate something different with Alpine Mountain Region for April 2019.

Some thoughts for you to provide us feedback on:

• Instructor Clinic

– Do we even have one, have one every year, or have one every other year?

–Can we make better use of your time and provide training via webinars, links, etc.?

– Have an instructor only day or evening at the track?

• Have more informal Instructor Socials?

Driving Evals has been a huge success for both the students and instructors. We’ve learned a lot on all fronts, there have been some good suggestions made, and instructors have been receiving high marks in general. Keep it up! Thanks Doug Bartlett for initiating and overseeing this program! Also, Steve Keisling has agreed to give Doug a hand with this for the upcoming season – thanks Steve!

And please let us know how your CDIs can improve your instructing expertise.

STUDENT TRAINING

Do you have any good ideas to spice up our DE program - we’re all ears!

Our DE Novice and Advanced Classroom Sessions keep get t ing b e t t e r a n d b e t t e r . Special thanks to Scott Henderson for his tireless commitment to our novice program.

• Green Run Group Enhancements

Most of you are aware that we added a shor t third classroom session right after lunch to focus on the layout of the track and have instructors drive the first two laps of the afternoon session. With so much going on in the student’s mind, we found that they were get t ing lost on the track. Almost

every student said this really helped.

• Advanced Drivers Meeting

You may recall that these were added to provide needed training for our seasoned drivers – we felt that they were being neglected. These sessions have been a huge hit, so much so that we are considering doing them during lunch so everyone can attend.

THE RACING APEX

Scott Rogers saw this video on Digg last spring and wanted me to share it – it is another good reference about the racing apex. Thanks Scot t! http://digg.com/video/racing-lines-explainer

On behalf of your CDI Committee, thank you for your significant contributions to another tremendous performance driving season. You’re appreciated!

Happy Holidays, and here’s to “Raising the Bar” even higher in 2019!

CHARITY COMMITTEE REPORT

At the 2018 Porsche Parade in Lake of the Ozarks, MO, RMR was awarded the 3rd place Public Ser-vice Award for 2017. This award, which recognizes outstanding ser-vice to the community and charity, is a testament to the kindness and generosity of our members in their support of non-profit organizations in our Front Range communities. I am happy to report that we have had another good year for charita-ble giving in 2018, our 60th anniver-sary year. RMR and its members donated over $17,000 to various charitable organizations this year in addition to the money raised at the 35th Annual Concours d’Elegance in June 2018. While the Charity Committee is a relatively new addi-tion to RMR, it has become an in-tegral part of our activity planning.

The RMR Board and club mem-bers continued their support of two Front Range service organiza-tions with donations to Ability Con-nection Colorado and the Denver Round Table.

A $500 donation was made to Ability Connection Colorado in conjunction with the Concours d’Elegance that has been held ev-ery June since 1984. This year, there were over 400 cars regis-tered, including 90 Porsches, an estimated 14,000 attendees, and 60 RMR volunteers. One high-light was the commemorative dis-play of 33 special Porsches. Over $116,000 was raised in support of Ability Connection Colorado’s Creative Options Early Childhood Education Centers, which provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services

to nearly 700 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their fami-lies each year.

The Denver Round Table re-ceived $500 in support of its Bids for Kids Auction that helps fund the Children’s Hospital Colorado ARCH Program and the Ridgeview Academy. The ARCH program provides recreational resources and programs for children, teens and young adults with physical disabilities. Ridgeview Academy offers Colorado’s at-risk youth a least restrictive, staff-secure Aca-demic Model™ program to ensure public safety while promoting a normalized high school experience for its students to support positive change in their lives.

The RMR Board also approved six donations of $500 each in re-sponse to RMR members’ re-quests. The first donation was to the David Bucknam Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides fi-nancial support to a junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college or univer-sity with a major in a field related to mine reclamation or restoration. RMR old-timers will remember the wonderful tours across the Conti-nental Divide that David planned for the club.

Donations of $500 were also made to the Food Bank of the Rockies, the Front Range German Shepherd Rescue, Make-a-Wish Colorado, Project Angel Heart, and the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation.

In addition to the funds request-ed by members and approved by

the RMR Board, we also encour-age our event chairs to designate a charity for their events and raise money through noontime rides, on-line donations, raffles, skillfully ap-plied arm twisting, and great per-sonal charm and persuasiveness.

Our first event of the year, the New Member Social, saw an at-tendance of 250 both old and new members. The designated charity for this event was Make-A-Wish Colorado, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. We collected $56.00 in donations from our members at this event. This was augmented by a $500 dona-tion approved by the RMR Board.

Once again, Rome Chelsi and Pete Romenesko kicked off the driving season with the Stick and Paddle DE in May. The charities for this event were the Center for the Arts, Evergreen Capital Campaign fund-ing a new community art center in Evergreen, and the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund, which supports the University Hospital’s fight against lung cancer, including basic, clinical and translational research, training of the next generation of physicians and scientists, patient financial as-sistance, and facility and infrastruc-ture improvements. Rome and Pete raised $1,036, split between the two charities.

A special 60th Anniversary Cele-bration was held in June 2018 at The Lodge in Vail. Participants at this event donated $610 to the Denver Dumb Friends League, an organiza-tion devoted to reducing pet home-lessness and animal suffering.

In June, David and Jody Schmidt devised another fun-filled gimmick

rally, Rally Quest – The Search for Sasquatch. Their designated charity was the Colorado Fallen Hero Foun-dation, which supports and serves the families of officers who have died in the line of duty. We had good news on two fronts – Sasquatch was found and event profits and member donations in the amount of $1,844 were donated to the Foundation.

In late June, the Summer School DE, co-chaired by Brian Lay and Brian Bobich, supported the Cotton-wood Institute, an organization that collaborates with schools and youth organizations to provide high quality, high impact environmental educa-tion and service-learning programs to encourage students to be envi-ronmentally aware and civically en-gaged. Event participants donated $700 to this charity.

In July, our DE enthusiasts re-turned to High Plans Raceway for the Cookin’ on the Plains DE, co-chaired by Scott Farrell and Tom Radow. Our event chairs chose the David Buch-nam Memorial Scholarship Founda-

tion as the designated charity, and members’ donations provided an additional $840 to the Foundation.

Ladies’ Day, co-chaired by Stacy Robins and Elaine Liedtke, was held in August at the Colorado State Pa-trol track in Golden. Members do-nated a total of $550 through direct donations and noontime rides. The club donated an additional $2,000 in lieu of track fees. We were honored to have CSP Major Brett Mattson at the drivers’ meeting to tell us about the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation. The Foundation’s mis-sion is to support the members of the Association of Colorado State Patrol Professionals and their fami-lies in times of crisis, further the ed-ucation of such members and their families, provide training classes on defensive driving for the motoring public, and to enhance opportunities for professional and personal growth to members of the Association fam-ily.

CHARITY COMMITTEE REPORT

2018, the Novice Drivers DE at the CSP track in Golden on the Sunday following Ladies’ Day. At this event, he raised an additional $350 for the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund.

The Rocky Mountain Thunder Club Race/Super DE/Enduro was held at High Plains Raceway in September. Event co-chairs Doug Bartlett and Art Van Dyck chose the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation Burn Center as the designated charity. The University of Colorado Hospital Burn Center is the leading regional burn center in the Rocky Mountain Region and the only adult burn cen-ter verified by the American Burn Association in the Rocky Mountain Region providing patients with high quality, comprehensive and com-passionate care from time of injury through rehabilitation. $1,350 was raised and donated to the Burn Unit in memory of Jerry Schouten, a longtime RMR member and an avid club racer.

The September DE, Waggin’ Tails - German Cars and German Dogs, was chaired by Joe Bank this year. The

designated charity for this event was the Front Range German Shepherd Rescue, a fully volunteer run group dedicated to rescuing and finding homes for purebred German Shep-herds. Prior to the DE, Joe offered rides in his Factory 2011 GT3 Cup Car in exchange for a $100 donation to the charity. He not only provided an opportunity for RMR DE enthusi-asts to experience the sensations of a genuine professional level race car, but also raised $2,840 in addition to the Club donation, despite the can-cellation of Sunday’s events due to bad weather.

Holly and Dave Jackson chaired the 4x4 Tour to Breckenridge in early October. The tour provided spectac-ular views above tree line for those willing to rough it and explore the back roads. This event raised $586 for the Food Bank of the Rockies, which provides an invaluable service to communities all along the front range in Colorado by helping ensure that no one in our communities goes hungry.

Brian Bobich volunteered to chair

the Cones are a Fallin’ Autocross held at the Front Range Airport in October. At this last driving event of the season, Brian supported the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation, which collects toys and distributes them to less fortunate children in our communities to give them a message of hope that will assist them in becoming responsi-ble and patriotic citizens. We col-lected four large bags of toys as well as $560 in cash that was added to the $500 club donation. These were delivered to the Toys for Tots ware-house in Aurora in mid-November in time for sorting and distribution to those in need in our local communi-ty.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, rath-er inelegantly, the quality of mercy blesses both those who receive and those who give. It is heartening to witness the consistent generosity of our members to those in need in our local communities. I thank you for this and wish all of you many bless-ings in the new year.

Making Sense of Porsche Models By: Ivan Calhoun

So as a way of introduction I need to tell y’all two things about me (though using y’all there I also probably let on I’m mostly from a state a bit southeast of Colorado). First, I’m in my first year of owning a Porsche and being a member of this club. Secondly, I’ve worked a long time in information technology – basically, I’m a geek.

One of the challenges of my developing experience in this world is catching up to a previously unrealized lack of knowledge about the cars. Though having been a Porsche fan and enthusiast since I was 10 I learned this year that my basic ability to distinguish between a 356, 911, 944, and 928 meant I hardly still knew much of anything. And after having purchased my first German car in 2018 I quickly discovered it’s actually a 996 causing me to all of sudden realize, heck – I better get to understanding these cars much more. And yes, I did choose a 1999 model of this car with little more knowledge than it was in terrific shape, had low miles, was set up like I wanted, and was a price I was comfortable getting started in this new life. I want to write an article in the future about what finding out what an IMS bearing is has made me think - though I will add I am still exceedingly enamored with my car.

Luckily, I was already looking forward to joining PCA and was pleasantly surprised to learn about our region and the opportunities it

presents, especially for education. Though I was challenged a bit to get to a lot of events this past year I dug what I did learn when I got to something and talked with some of you. This magazine, HighGear, and the PCA ‘Panaroma’ magazine are now my favorite two pieces of mail each month as well which I immediately devour upon arrival. I started buying other Porsche related magazines and f inally started getting some books as well. The book that I’ve most enjoyed acquiring and reading is Wayne Dempsey’s ‘Speed Read Porsche 911’. What a terrific base level of education it provided on everything from the history of the company, to the brand’s racing legacy, to all the numerous 911 models. And boy, there were even more of those than I thought!

W h a t f i n i s h i n g t h a t b o o k and getting finally some basic knowledge of all the Porsche models helped most was making sense of all the Porsches for sale in the back of the monthly PCA magazines. I actually love reading them all with grand dreams of getting one of every one of them some day. But all the various indicated models in the ads had been losing me. That’s when my inner geekdome kicked in.

I needed a Porsche batting line-up and I knew I could produce a simple one quickly using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. I use this software daily in the completion of my day job. In addition to normal

uses calculating, tracking, and reporting numbers I have found it a useful authoring tool for certain types of presentations including simple project plans.

I decided I needed to produce a modified version of what we call a GANTT chart charting all the various Porsche models as a reference tool when reading articles, books, and especially advertisements. And following is what I’ve compiled and drafted from all the reading material I’ve already acquired. Each of the indicated timeperiods do encompass all of the various versions of that sub-model and are intended to be just representative of when that car was generally available new to customers.

This will be a work-in-progress for me through this journey I’ve chosen with all of you. I look forward to adding notes and maybe even model illustrations and engine info to it. I think I will need to add racing and supercar models to it eventually as well. But in the meantime, I’m already liking that I have it to make me feel more knowledgeable. I expect someday I may not ever need it again – that is true about a number of other things I am a “subject-matter-expert” on including information technology. But in the meantime, I think I’m going to get this reference chart laminated!

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out. Just exactly where have we been, us gearheads, and just exactly where are we going?

To that end, I’ve been sifting through “stuff.” I’ve been ripping, printing and copying everything that has come across my desk and piqued my interest. All with an eye toward trying to identify slants, angles and trends that may, that just may, have something to do with what we can expect in the coming year.

Is my stuff leading me down the right track? I haven’t a clue. As they say, time alone will tell. But that’s never stopped me before, and it won’t stop me now. And, hey, you dear reader can play too. I mean what have we got to lose? Whoever looks back at year-end to see if we’ve been right? Right?

So here goes. At least four automotive trends keep f loating up in my treasured, virtual crystal ball.

The cont inued sl ide in sales of passenger cars vs light trucks/SUVs.

I recently happened across year-to-date data for sales here in Colorado. Through September 2018, sales of passenger cars were down 14.7%. Sales of light trucks in the same time frame were up 4.9%.

That translates to a market share for non-luxury SUVs of 45% versus 42% last year. For what it’s worth, sales in the same time frame of luxury and sports cars were … drum roll … unchanged year over year at 4%.

I don’t get it. I mean, really, we all do know that traditional station wagons actually provide more interior space than comparable SUVs. And better handling. Four-wheel drive? Offered on both. Fuel economy? The nod goes to the car. Commanding high-riding view in all directions? The SUV wins. As if it matters when you’ve got lane departure alerts, lane change alerts, parking assist and so

on and so forth. The nanny state controls your driving today, regardless what you’re driving, or how high you’re sitting in the saddle.

How did this happen? I mean, really. I feel like I woke up and, lo and behold, SUVs were everywhere. Right, Porsche? And let’s not even begin to get into their profitability. Although that might, just might, be a key to their proliferation. Just saying.

The rich get richer. Yeah, I know you know this. But it’s still

fun to periodically bring it back to earth. Exhibit A is prices for attending Pebble this coming August. Are you sitting down? Good.

Sports Car Market says this about the 2019 Concours d’Elegance … you know the one, where they set off confetti guns as the winner rolls up on the platform, which is sited strategically on the 18th fairway in front of the clubhouse with dolphins and whales cavorting in the glistening sea in the background … that one. SCM says general admission tickets will be $375. “Club d’Elegance” tickets are $825. For the ultimate Pebble experience be prepared to fork over $2,500. That gets you the Patrons Patio at the Winners Circle. Or the Chairman’s Hospitality at the Lodge that will set you back $3,000. For the day. One day. Order early, they always sell out.

Autonomous delivery.Oh yeah, autonomous cars are coming.

It’s only a matter of time … mostly, I think, the time needed to master the intricacies of liability law should something go wrong. And that’s fine.

But what’s actually bucking up to the here and now, right now, is commercial applications. Automotive News reports that, starting this past Dec 5, Waymo, the “subsidiary spun from Google to handle autonomous driving intends to offer commercial service with its self-driving

Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. The service is called Waymo One.”

Think of the service as an autonomous Uber or Lyft. “The minivans can carry up to three adults and one child at a time,” says Automotive News. Now, when you couple this effort with the one they launched earlier last year with Walmart, and their partnership with AutoNation and partnership with Avis Budget Group, and entrants in the autonomous truck market, as well as autonomous deliveries and licensing of technology, it all rolls up to a potential company valuation of $175 billion. So says Morgan Stanley.

Formula1 will rebuild the sport and grow its fan base.

Huh? Well, that’s what Liberty Media says it plans to do in the New Year. I certainly hope so.

You may recall that Liberty Media bought Formula One for $4.4 billion in January 2017. On an analyst conference call last November, Chase Carey, the leader of the racing business, said 2018 was a “beta project” for its digital offerings. The plan, he outlined, features an “over the top” streaming service. Formula One, he said, “is now the fastest growing sport on social media with 18.1 million followers. That number is up 50 percent from a year ago.”

According to the Denver Post, “Carey is also excited about the addition of in-race betting to the sport. In September, Liberty reached a $100 million deal with Interregional Sports Group to allow for live, in-play betting at the race track. He likened it to what fantasy football has done for the NFL.”

All righty then. Mirror, mirror who’ll win and who’ll lose on the road and on the track?

Tune in a year from now if you remember. I’ll see ya.

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER … WHAT?

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

A new year is upon us. We might want to believe that for in the world of Porsche Cars every year is a milestone year. Whether its design or technol-ogy or a marketing approach, there’s ALWAYS something new and unique. But there’s already a good argument to make that 2019 is going to be one of those years that we will look back at and say, “year 2019 was a turning point.” As an example of a turning point, many might agree that the shift from the air-cooled to water-cooled 911s was a milestone, and as a result, the period of 1998-1999 was a “spe-cial” time in the history of the brand. At that moment in time, I’m told that lots of people thought that going wa-ter-cooled would be the end of the 911. For the same reason, I would argue that the 2019 introduction of certain 2020 model year Porsches will be seen as equally as “special.” I’m careful to use the words “special” and “milestone” because I’m not judging either good or bad. That judgment will be up to each of you depending on where you stand

on the continuum of new technology to collectable nostalgia.

The reason for this special milestone point is electrification. By now, most of us have heard about or seen press images of the 2020 Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric car. Initially rumored to be one model, it appears that due to high anticipated demand the late 2019 introduction will come in two variants.

Another milestone, but along the same electric path, is a bit more hidden. It’s hidden in the architecture of the new generation 911 (model designation 992). While there is certainly no an-nouncement of a hybrid-powered 911 as of yet, the packaging of the 8-speed PDK gearbox is set up to allow space for the addition of an electric motor in the rear section. Clearly we’ll have to wait for a hybrid 911, but 2019 with the introduction of the 992 platform is the year that will enable that era.

Regardless of the changes that will eventually be ushered into the full product line as the result of full or par-tial electrification, some reactions will

be predictably the same. Sentimen-talists will pine for the sound of the exhaust and the turbo whine; even for that smell imparted to the garage af-ter a particularly spirited drive. Tech-nocrats will embrace the efficiency of the new platforms and the ability to get more combined power and torque out of less weight and space. They’ll gush about instantaneous torque from a fully electric Porsche, an even lower center of gravity, and (I suspect) a near 50/50 front to rear weight distribution.

In the end, the Cars and Coffee con-versations among all of us geeky PCA members will change…but just in the details. However, the joy of having the argument, as well as the delight in having someone to have the argu-ment with, will remain the same. And in THAT sense, every year is a special year.

Wishing all Zone 9 PCA members a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
