This paper is the main document of multipurpose water uses of hydropower reservoirs within the EDF WWC partnership. Many of the water reservoirs in the world are dedicated to several purposes. This framework analyses reservoirs with hydropower as one of the main driver for their development. Reservoir purposes can conflict at times but are also often complementary. This framework addresses several topics: tools to avoid/minimize tensions among users, governance issues for all stages and financial/economical models to develop and operate such multipurpose reservoirs.

Description of the main deliverables of this EDF-WWC Framework Multipurpose water uses

    of hydropower reservoirs

This framework addresses reservoirs with hydropower at least as one of the purposes. There are three

main deliverables for this framework; this document presents the Main document.

The Main Document provides the key messages for sustainable water management of multipurpose

reservoirs including hydropower, using the principles of Shared vision, Shared resource, Shared

responsibilities, Shared rights and risks, Shared costs and benefits. A In turn, these principles drive the

SHARE concept: Sustainability approach for all users, Higher efficiency and equity among sectors,

Adaptability for all solutions, River basin perspectives for all, and Engaging all stakeholders. This

document presents Boxes with examples of good international practices for multipurpose reservoir,

backed up by case studies, which are contained in the Annex Document.

The Annexes provide twelve case studies that were analysed worldwide which are highlighting at least

one of the SHARE principles Shared vision, Shared resource, Shared responsibilities, Shared rights

and risks, Shared costs and benefits. These cases have been collected using a template designed

especially for this Framework with ICOLD and/or with public information. There are no one-size-fits-

all solutions. However thanks to these examples, it is possible to find guidance to address particular

issues of multipurpose water reservoirs. These Annexes offer the readers/users the possibility to find

    case studies matching their needs.

The Leaflet provides an overview of the key messages, SHARE concept and case studies, as well as

background information of this EDF-WWC Framework, with other supporting organisations.
