Coquitlam RCMP are warning owners of large pickup trucks to lock up their tires after receiving a handful of reports of stolen tires and rims.

Cpl. Jamie Chung said five large trucks parked out-side homes have been tar-geted in the past two weeks on Westwood Plateau and Burke Mountain in Coquitlam, and one in Port Coquitlam.

“They’ve targeted big trucks, like the Ford F150 and 250, and the latest one was a bigger Toyota truck,” Chung said. “They’re not picking any of the smaller

vehicles, they’re aiming for the bigger vehicles.”

Chung noted the trend is concerning given that thefts from vehicles usually in-volve crooks breaking into cars to get at loose change or other items left inside.

“But this is more serious because they’re spending the time to get the rims and the tires off the vehicle,” he said.

Chung suggested truck owners purchase special-ized locks to secure their wheels and tires.

“It’s a special kind of lug nut and it takes a special kind of wrench to unlock it,” Chung said. “There’s still the potential [for theft] but that’s going to reduce it by a lot.”

He also suggested own-ers keep their vehicles in-side a locked garage.

Container truckers voted unanimously Sunday to take strike ac-tion again if needed in response to the imposi-tion of what they say are lower-than-promised rates to haul goods in and out of Port Metro Vancouver terminals.

Union and non-union truckers met Sunday in Surrey to discuss their next steps after talks Friday with Port Metro Vancouver’s CEO.

Truckers staged a 28-day strike last March that ended on govern-ment promises to re-form the rate structure to halt rampant under-cutting and stabilize the industry.

The province passed legislation in October to set minimum rates but only revealed them Dec. 15.

eschew our usual bellicose bickering and, instead, wassail our way to expository détente.

So, in an attempt to keep your bile and figgy pudding down, join us as we once again walk Arm in Arm instead of roistering Face to Face.

Touch my robe Ebenezer, and gaze upon some things we agree on from news stories past…

JimInternationally, we agree that a two-state solution is the

only basis for meaningful Middle East peace talks and that such a solution should be strengthened if not brokered by international discussion.

In Syria and Iraq, we agree that we should all pick one acronym — ISIS or ISIL — and stick with it.

But ISIS or ISIL, we decry their actions. The bastardiza-tion of a religion has led to the most barbaric and public acts that no end can justify.

And we both wish that neither side in these hostilities tolerated the collateral damage caused by indiscriminate attacks or drone strikes, both of which kill innocent women and children.

AndyUnfortunately, this year, senseless violence made its way

into Canada. In October, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Corporal Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa — were killed in acts that some are labelling terror-ism.

While Jim and I disagree on what to call it, we hope that all the federal political parties abstain from politicizing the deaths.

Moreover, we’re both of the mind that we don’t want the Ottawa incident to affect Canadians’ ability to frequent the hallowed halls of Parliament Hill. The openness and access to our elected officials is a symbol of our democracy

and a Canadian value that we both hold near and dear to our hearts.

Closer to home, the teacher’s dispute was probably the biggest news story of the year. What a mess that was!

In our letters to Santa, both Jim and I have encouraged the jolly old man to put coal in the stockings of all the negotiators. The teachers’ strategy was ill-considered and the government’s position was blunt and overbearing. As a result of their collective failings, B.C. schools have suf-fered.

And unfortunately, if history is an example, this is a dis-pute that will continue.

JimThanks for talking about education Andy… if I had to do

it, I’d still be writing.On oil tankers, we agree that neither “drill baby drill”

nor “leave it all in the ground” is an acceptable strategy. We think there may be acceptable-risk oil options if the environment, not just dollars and “jobs,” is our paramount concern.

And above all, we both wish that we invested as much to get off our oil dependency as we do trying to convince ev-

eryone that it’s all good and that environmental activism is hypocritical if you drive a car or have ever been in a plane.

But we don’t want to get off our dependency on local voters and we agree that it’s great to see voter participation in recent municipal elections up from pathetic to unac-ceptably low (except in Anmore and Belcarra, where 52% and 61% of voters crossed their acres to vote).

And we agree that it was controversy that brought out voters this time: a strong mayoral challenge in Port Moody, the slate brouhaha in Coquitlam and the shocking travails of School District 43 trustees.

We both believe that the debate over slate politics in is a red-herring. Both of us — and we think most of you — vote for a civic candidate based on his or her character, experi-ence and community service.

We’re both euphoric about the Evergreen Line and favour almost any proposed expansion of the system (de-spite a few recent operational snafus). We both think that SkyTrain and light rail to the valley and White Rock might vault us all to environmental nirvana.

AndySpeaking of euphoria, we’re both Canuck fans again! The

drama that submerged this team over the past several years has suddenly disappeared and a new-era — the Trevor Linden era — is upon us. They might be a few years away from being a contender again but they’re so much fun to watch.

On that note, Jim, maybe we can get together over the holidays at one of our fine local establishments to cheer on the home team. Until then, Jim, Merry Christmas to you and yours.

The following message is for Premier Christy Clark:

So, Premier Clark what are your plans for the taxpayers of B.C. in this new year? Could it be the reopening of Riverview that once was the only provin-cial mental hospital? How about reopening Valleyview 300, which was the se-niors’ home for people with dementia? With the fast approach of the baby boomers, Valleyview is desperately needed. The structures and foundations are already there, so let the work begin.

Riverview has a great po-tential to continue to meet mental health care needs in this community as well as support compatible uses and provide a place of quiet refuge open to all who wish to enjoy its beautiful trees and tranquil landscapes.

So please listen to my plea and give the people of this prosperous province a Christmas present or a New Year’s gift.

We hope our prayers will be answered as soon as possible.

As we have in previous years, The Tri-City News is printing a list of large light displays in the Tri-Cities for Christmas. You can check out this story online for a map of local light displays.

COQUITLAM• 145 King Edward

St. (Millcreek Village): Numerous homes deco-rated and No. 42 has a 90-foot tree lit up top to bottom.

• Cable Court: All 20 houses on this street are dec-orated — more than 40,000 lights on the street and some nice displays. Lights are on 5 to 9 p.m. daily.

• 2988 Forestridge Pl.: The Bilesky family display features lots of lights and yard decorations from Disney characters, wise men and angels to a herd of grazing reindeer on the rooftop. There is even a special area where you can take your picture with a life-size Santa. Lights are on daily until Jan. 4 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Donations are accepted for Variety — The Children’s Charity

• 646 Claremont St.: See a complete nativ-ity, baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, shepherds and the three wise men, plus Santa and Mrs. Claus, reindeer, Christmas trees and more. As well, lights — there are more than 8,000 — are set to music. Display is open daily from 5 to 10 p.m. Donations accepted for the Knights of Columbus Charities.

• 1440 Cambridge Dr.: Bruce Murphy’s display features an electric train with bells and whistles, a nativity scene, more than 30,000 lights with music plus five geese pulling a sleigh, a 5.5 m candle and a 2.5 m wreath as well as Santa’s Workshop with elves and a hot air bal-

loon. It’s open daily, 5:30 to 10 p.m. and donations are being collected for BC Children’s Hospital.

• 1417 Garibaldi Pl.: John and Trudy invite you to enjoy their homemade Christmas for the 33rd year. More than 100 hand-painted display pieces on house and in the yard. Two themes: traditional Christmas with manger scene, shepherds, wise men and angels; plus con-temporary Christmas with Santa, reindeer, toy trains, nutcrackers and singing snowmen — all lit up with more than 4,000 lights. Display is open daily from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

• 3376 Creston Close: The Montgomery/Lanctot family’s Candy Cane House has a red and white theme featuring thousands of lights that are 95% LED. Mrs. Mary Claus in a win-dow wrapping presents, Santa Claus in another win-dow delivering presents, eating cookies and waving. The display is open 7 to 11 p.m. daily through Jan. 2 and the owners ask for visi-tors’ votes in the Light up the Foothills contest.

• 2939 Keets Dr.: About

10,000 lights plus nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, three wise men and shepherd boy with lamb and donkey; 20 lighted trees (spiral, pathway, etc); star; North Pole scene of Santa Claus with sleigh full of presents, Rudolph and another reindeer; other reindeer (sitting, standing, jumping); dancing, singing snow-men; candy cane pathway; Frosty; skating Frosty; drummer boy; additional Santas; laser lights and much more. Open daily (except Dec. 16 and 17) from 5 to 11 p.m.

• 838 Lillian St.: A Child’s Christmas — giant inflatable Santa, candy cane lights, Winnie characters and flashing lights. This is the idea of a seven-year-old boy, who used his birthday money to buy some of the decoration. The display is open daily from 6 to 9 p.m.

• 927 Lillian St.: Pretty display of thousands of twinkling lights, polar bears, penguins, snow-men, horse and carriage, trees, presents, shivering snowman, snowflakes, candy canes, etc. Open daily through Jan. 1, 4:30

to 11 p.m. Donations are collected for BC Children’s Hospital.

• 678 Folsom St.: The Magic of Lights lives here — and has for years, viewed each year by thou-sands of people. Roof-top graphic display screen, 27-foot-wide with 22,000 LED lights; planters have large wire-framed trees that show the magic of lights. Santa herding rein-deer moving thought the air — 50,000 plus lights programmed, twinkling and dancing moving in pat-terns; all controlled hun-dreds of microprocessors and computers; 36 panel displays and more. Check it out on YouTube by search-ing 678 Folsom Street.

• 545 Sunset Ave.: This house has two eight-foot trees that dance to music, 2,200 lights on the roof, a candy stick fence and much more — 15,500 lights in all. Display is open daily from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. daily.

PORT COQUITLAM• 1228 Oriole Pl.: Lots of

lights, set to music, and the display includes characters and reindeers on the roof. Display is open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily until Jan. 3.

• 3313 Rae St.: More than 100,000 lights plus ground displays synchro-nized to music plus a decorated 80-foot tree at the “Miracle on Rae Street.” Lights will be on Sunday to Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 5 to 11 p.m.. Contributions to the food bank will be gratefully accepted.

PORT MOODY• 512 April Rd.: An alley

display featuring about 10,000 lights as well as sev-eral blow-ups and a special tribute for a grandfather who recently passed.

Coquitlam pianist Rosemary O’Connor was trying to master Bright Shen’s Tibetan Dance, a challenging classical work for clarinet, violin and piano made up of three movements.

But when she stumbled on a few passages — wondering if there were mistakes with its printing — O’Connor did what any smart (and bold) musician would do: she contacted the composer directly.

The Skype session with Shen, who is based at the University of Michigan, “was just so wonderful,” O’Connor said. “He was so friendly and very interested about our performance.”

The evocative and spir-ited Tibetan Dance will be the second piece played at QuiRing the New Year, the seventh annual New Year’s Eve concert hosted by O’Connor and her husband Reg Quiring at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre.

And for this year’s show, the pair will share the stage with four friends:

• violinist Catherine French, a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra who has her master’s degree from the Julliard School (and grew up with Quiring in Calgary);

• clarinetist Francois Houle, a versatile Vancouver musician and Juno-award nominee;

• cellist Marina Hasselberg, a founding member of the NOVO Ensemble who has a pas-sion for Baroque cello music;

• and violinist Cameron Wilson, best known for his work with Van Django and The Hard Rubber Orchestra.

It’s not the first time French and Wilson have performed a Dec. 31 re-cital with O’Connor and Quiring.

French was in the couple’s 2011 event while, the following year, they had Wilson and fellow Van Djangoers Budge Schachte (guitar), Finn Manniche (guitar and cello) and Brent

Gubbles (acoustic bass) as their musical guests.

Though the modern Tibetan Dance is the cen-trepiece, the show starts with a Classical tune: Mozart’s Clarinet and Strings Quintet in A-major KV 581 — a composition penned in 1789 for clarinet-ist Anton Stadler.

It is Mozart’s only com-pleted clarinet quintet and remains one of his most admired works. “It’s a great way to begin the new year,” said Quiring, who plays viola and violin and also heads up the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra.

A-major returns for the final set as well when O’Connor, Quiring (on vio-lin), Hasselberg and French perform Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 2 Opus 26. “A-major is such a positive, celebrating sound,” Quiring said, “that, of course, we had to close the year with it and welcome the new year.”

Houle, who has per-formed with the Quirings including at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Pyatt Hall as part of its sum-mer festival, said he likes the couple’s program mix.

“As there is a bit of new music for this end-of-year

concert, they figured I’d be a good fit since I special-ize in that style of music,” Houle said. “But we’re also playing the Mozart quintet, which is and always will be the favorite piece for clarinet players to perform as it’s full of gorgeous melo-dies and fun interplay with a string quartet.”

Dance the night away as the Evergreen Cultural Centre turns into a Latin night club on New Year’s Eve.

The Hot Salsa Dance Zone hosts its annual party in the ECC rehearsal room (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam), featuring salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia and cha-cha-cha sounds to sway your hips.

Organizer Alberto Gonzalez will perform a number — along with his fellow dance instructor/partner Teresa Szefler — at 10:30 p.m. while cham-pagne will flow at midnight to usher in 2015.

“It’s going to be a spicy New Year’s,” he said, not-ing last year’s dance drew more than 100 party-goers grooving to the high-energy beats. “It’s always lots of fun.”

But, unlike in years past, there will be no dance class for beginners. Instead the Dec. 31 event will go from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., with Gonzalez working the DJ table for the five hours.

Participants are encour-aged to wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes to boogie. A cash bar will be available and parking is free.

Dance partners are not required. “Come with your friends or come alone. There’s enough room on the dance floor for every-body,” Gonzalez said.

FIFTH YEAR FOR LIGHT DISPLAY

FIREWORKS

Fireworks will be shooting off on New Year’s Eve — for the fifth year — outside Ecole Maple Creek middle school in Port Coquitlam.

Licensed pyrotechni-cians Natasha Calder and Dustin Stratford are host-ing the celebratory event, which was attended by some 2,000 spectators last year. The show will start at midnight at last up to 20 minutes.

The Coquitlam resi-dents, who have worked on light displays for Canada Day, are part of a company called Celebration Fireworks that is allowing the pair to use their gear on Dec. 31.

“The New Year’s show

was started by us in 2011 when we realized there wasn’t very much to do in the area to celebrate or any fireworks nearby,” Calder said. “The show is paid for by us and personal donations from neighbours. We go door-to-door before the show and have donation tables set up at the show.”

Calder said they have secured a permit from the PoCo fire department and been given the okay from the middle school.

“They both love that we do the show because it stops people from want-ing to do their own fire-works unsafely without a permit — and it stops vandalism at the school.”

Children and caregivers will be entertained with sto-ries, songs, rhymes at Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Library (2470 Mary Hill Rd.) on Jan. 7.

Kids are encour-aged to wear their pyjamas and bring their favourite stuffie at the event, which runs from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at the facility.

“These are tracks we’d recorded over the years and we just decided to com-plete them and release the album to show our appre-ciation to the fans who have supported us all this time,” Dean stated on the band’s

website, noting the album moniker was decided by a Facebook vote.

The album also includes War Bride — a song played once live in 1979 before Loverboy signed with Columbia Records — and You Play the Star.

Many BCHL players are vying to overtake Coquitlam Express forward Corey Mackin in the league scor-ing race, but the biggest threat to his title could be coming from within the 19-year-old’s own locker room.

Mackin’s teammate Brett Supinski has been quietly moving up the league scoring list and now sits in third place in the BCHL, three points behind West Kelowna’s Liam Blackburn.

Supinski added two goals and an assist to his totals over the weekend and has now amassed an impressive 1.4 points per game average in 35 games this season. He heads into the new year with 24 goals and 24 assist.

The 19-year-old forward was a major factor during Saturday’s overtime win against the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The Express jumped

out to a three goal lead in the game, with mark-ers from Dustin Cave, a short-handed

gaol from Daniel Fritz and even strength tally from Corey Mackin. Chad Staley got Prince George on the board with 45 seconds left in before the first intermission.

Despite being behind, the Spruce Kings came out strong in the second period.

Jeremiah Luedtke cut down Coquitlam’s lead on the power play, before Braiden Epp tied the game for the visitors when he bur-ied pass from Rider Stoglin.

Epp helped his team to a 4-3 lead in the third period, but Mackin was able to tie the game up when he scored with three minutes left in the game.

In the overtime period Supinski, who was named first star of the game, buried the game-winner off a feed from Mackin to take the game 5-4.

The high school bas-ketball exhibition season is well underway, as teams jockey for posi-tion in the league rank-ings ahead of the regular season kickoff in the new year.

Both Port Moody and Centennial secondary

played a handful of games as part of the annual Bob Gair Classic tournament in New Westminster last week, with both teams compiling a 1-2 record at the tournament.

Port Moody opened the event with a 63-51 loss against West Vancouver on Wednesday, before taking their first win of the season when they

defeated Johnson Heights secondary 77-64.

However, Port Moody could not maintain the momentum from the victory and lost 64-49 to Killarney secondary in their third and final game of the tournament.

Centennial had a simi-lar showing at the Bob Gair Classic.

One point was the dif-

ference for Centennial in Game 1 of the tourney Wednesday, which the Coquitlam club lost 69-68 against the hosting New Westminster secondary Hyacks.

Centennial lost another close one, a 77-74 defeat at the hands of Killarney the next day before notching their first win over Johnson Heights in

the final game of the tour-nament.

While tournaments will continue into the new year, regular season play will begin to ramp up in January.

While the Terry Fox secondary Ravens and Heritage Woods second-ary Kodiaks did not play last week, they are cur-rently the highest ranked

clubs in the Tri-Cities. The Ravens have been

ranked fifth in the AAAA league, while the Kodiaks are ranked 10th.

Dylan Foulds may be getting ready for his first year of university, but the young lacrosse player has already built up a pretty impressive resume on the field and in the box.

The Terry Fox secondary student was a member of Team BC when the club won the under-16 nation-als in 2013 and again with the under-19 club in 2014. He is a member of the Port Coquitlam Saints in the B.C. Jr. ‘A’ Lacrosse League and a former Burnaby Mountain Select Elite Touring Team member.

But now Foulds is get-ting ready for his greatest athletic challenge yet: playing with Penn State’s field lacrosse squad in the NCAA.

“I think that playing in those big games has truly

benefited me because every single game in the NCAA is a big game,” he said in an email. “There is no room for error if you want to win. Playing in multiple provincial and national championships

has taught me that.”Foulds started play-

ing field lacrosse when he was 11 but first picked up a lacrosse stick when he was five. He said he was attracted to the game when an older boy in his neighbourhood — Corbyn Tao who now plays with the Minnesota Swarm — was recruited to play for Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania.

“As a child, I thought it was the coolest thing ever,” Foulds said. “With his name and accomplish-ments floating around the neighbourhood, it made me want to do the same.”

In October, Foulds

made his first official visit to Penn State and said he had a good time getting to know some of his future teammates. He swill study business while in school and said he will have no problem balancing sports with his school work.

“When I got on campus and met the coaching staff, I knew I felt pretty comfort-able,” he said. “As far as campuses go, it is one of the nicest I’ve ever been too. Without a doubt being away from my friends and family will be a giant change, but I consider it to be another step in the long road of growing up.”[email protected]

During Saturday’s game, the Express were one-for-three with the man advan-tage, while goalie Chris Tai stopped 35 of the 39 shots he faced in 69 minutes of work.

Supinski had another strong game 24 hours earlier, when Coquitlam hosted the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday night, where he picked up his 23 goal of the season.

But it was Brendan Lamont that stole the show in front of the home town crowd, opening the scoring on the power play in the second period before mak-ing it 2-0 on a penalty shot five minutes into the middle frame.

Two power play goals from Victoria’s Brett Gruber — one with a minute left in the second period and another in the third — al-lowed the Grizzlies to push for overtime.

Once again, Supinski was there to save the day, pot-ting the game winner off a

pass from Mackin.

Express goalie Braden Krogfoss stood on his head during the match.

The high-powered Victoria offence put 48 shots on the 19-year-old net minder, who turned away all but two of them. He was named the third star of the game for his effort.

The Express were one-for-eight on the power play, while Victoria went two-for-seven with the man advantage.

Coquitlam will now gear up for a New Year’s eve game in Merritt against the Centennials, before return-ing home on Jan. 2 for a match against division rivals the Langley Rivermen.

Theo and Dolores would travel yearly to Zoetermeer and spend time with family and friends. Theo loved to build trams, and was an avid member of The British Columbia Society of Model Engineers.
