THE TRI-CITY NEWSA special edition of

It’s December 18 and you’ve just barelymade it through half of your holidayshopping list. The panic may have set inthat you just don’t have enough time toget everything done.

This is a common scenario aroundthe holidays. Shoppers have the bestintentions to get their gifts early, butwhether because of work obligationsor social events, the task seems toget pushed further and further intoDecember. Soon many are staring downthe calendar experiencing sweaty palms. Many others may be putting off holidayshopping simply because of the currentstate of the economy and affordability.

For the scores of shoppers whoconsciously or subconsciously wait untilthe last possible minute to shop, thereare ways to survive and surprise friendsand family with great gifts.

Gift cards: They may not havesentimental meaning behind them, butgift cards are fast and easy. Chancesare you can run into a store and beout with a handful of gift cards in lessthan 15 minutes, depending on linesat the checkout counter. Also, manysupermarkets, bookstores and otherretailers offer gift card kiosks enablingyou to shop for different gift cards all inone place.

Food and beverages: Whileeveryone is heading to the mall indroves, you can be stepping inside of agourmet food or spirits store. Splurgeon fine cheeses or that trendy bottleof liquor that a gift recipient hasmentioned but not yet purchased forhim- or herself.

Magazine subscription: Amagazine subscription is an easy fix asa last-minute gift. Purchase one copyof the magazine at the newsstand andwrap it up nicely. Put a note that a year’sworth of this periodical is on the way.No one will suspect that the gift was alast-minute thought.

E-certificates: Retailers likemusic or book sellers will e-mail a giftcertificate code to the person of yourchoice on a selected date. For those whoare never without an e-reader or mp3player, digital gifts could fit the bill.

Gas card: It may sound funny andtacky, but a gas card from a brand-namestation is a universally acceptable giftfor anyone who drives regularly. Withfluctuating gas prices, filling up the tankcan be an expensive venture. Having apre-paid gift card can help.

Online retailers are also there tohelp last-minute shoppers. Manyonline retailers guarantee in-time-

for-Christmas shipping even on giftsordered as late as December 23. However, overnight shipping charges will costmore. But it’s all worth it to get the itemin time.

Waiting until the last minute forshopping can induce some anxiety. But knowing about easy gifts forprocrastinators can take the stress outof this type of shopping.

Last-minute shoppi

Many people wait until the last minute for Christmasshopping. But there are still gifts and deals to be had.

Choose Charity This Holiday Season:Nature Conservancy of Canada

The holiday frenzy is upon us. The rushis on to find the “perfect” gift for everyoneon your holiday list. Unfortunately, for many, the last minute dash to theChristmas Eve finish line is guaranteedto end unhappily -- presents that are toobig, too small, and too outlandish. Toobad!

By some estimates as many as a thirdof holiday gift purchases are returned. In fact, up to 40 percent of all clothingpurchased as presents will end up back atthe stores it came from.

Purchase with a PurposeThe search for meaningful alternatives

isn’t as challenging as you might think.More and more Canadians are opting forgifts that are as much a delight to give asthey are to receive -- gifts with a purpose.

In fact, a new Ipsos Reid poll, conductedon behalf of the Nature Conservancy ofCanada (NCC), finds more than seven outof ten (74 percent) Canadians agree thatknowing someone has made a donation intheir name in lieu of a holiday gift makesthem feel good.

How do you Wrap a Reindeer? Many Canadian charities offer

alternative gift giving programs during

the holiday season, but only one will letyou put a piece of Canadian wildernessunder the tree. As the country’s leadingland conservation organization, NCCoffers Gifts of Canadian Nature, awonderful way to help protect the wildplaces and wildlife that we all treasure.

Starting at $40, Gifts of CanadianNature can be personalized in honourof the recipient who also receives a full-colour, eco-friendly calendar. You canchoose to help protect habitat for someof our most threatened species such asNewfoundland marten, northern saw-whet owl, grizzly bear or Canada lynx. Also on the list this year, caribou -- Santacalls them Reindeer.

It’s easy to wrap the beauty of Canada’swilderness this holiday season: Order online: www.giftsofnature.ca/Call toll-free to order: 1-800-465-8005

With the number of deaths and serious inju-ries caused by impaired drivers down by almosthalf in the past year, why is it still important toremind people not to drive while impaired?

Allan Lamb, President and COO of the BCAARoad Safety Foundation says it is because a sig-nificant number of drivers still get behind thewheel of a vehicle after they’ve become impairedby alcohol or drugs.

“There is an increase in social events at thistime of year and a large number of those driv-ing impaired are coming from the company offriends, colleagues and family,” stated Lamb. “It issimply not an option to drive impaired or to allowsomeone you know may be impaired to leave yourcompany and get behind the wheel of a car.”

In 2009, the BCAA Road Safety Foundationhelped establish Alexa’s Team in memory ofAlexa Middelaer who was killed by an impaireddriver in May of 2008. Over the past three yearsthe team has grown to over 400 RCMP and mu-nicipal police officers from all regions of theprovince.

In November, Premier Christy Clark an-nounced that alcohol-related motor vehicledeaths had been reduced by 40 per cent during theone-year period under Canada’s toughest penal-ties for impaired driving.

Premier Clark also announced a commitmentto help fund another tool for police, a mobile roadsafety bus that will focus on impaired drivingeducation and enforcement.

The BCAA Road Safety Foundation and theMiddelaer family are encouraged by these twoannouncements and are pleased that BritishColumbians are working to save the lives of theirfriends, neighbours, co-workers and family mem-bers.

Referring to the recent court ruling on theimmediate roadside prohibition ruling, Lamb re-minds drivers that police are enforcing impaireddriving laws and any driver that blows over .08

will still face the possibility of charges under theCriminal Code.

Here are a few tips from the BCAA Road SafetyFoundation to keep you, your friends and familymembers safe on the roads this holiday season:

Plan Your Night Out - Leave the car at homeand take public transit, taxis or arrange for adesignated driver service. You can even call a towtruck to take you and your car home. If the partyis at a friend’s house, plan to spend the night anddrive home the next day after the effects of thealcohol have worn off.

Be a designated driver - Take turns being therdesignated driver - when it’s your turn, stick tobeverages without alcohol.

Be a Good Host - Make sure your friends liveto remember the good cheer. Have a variety ofalcohol-fee beverages like pop, juice, coffee, teaor even trendy “mocktails” on hand. Make suresome of the guests have agreed to be designateddrivers and will not consume any alcohol. Ifyou are concerned that any of your guests areimpaired, call a taxi or offer the spare bed or thecouch. A disagreement over safety with a friendis better than risking the alternative.

Role Modelling - Parents, remember yourgkids watch and learn from you. It’s importantthat you demonstrate safe and healthy driving be-haviours at all times. Don’t drive impaired

Call Home Anytime - Young people likeChristmas parties, too. Often they don’t wantto admit that they or their friends drink or usedrugs if it means their parents will be angry. To them it’s worth the risk to drive or ride witha driver who is impaired. A “family contract”agrees that the kids can call home at any hour fora safe ride home.

Drug Impairment - Be aware of anyone whois impaired by something other than alcohol, whether it’s medications or illegal drugs suchas marijuana. Mixing alcohol and drugs can belethal for all road users.

Impaired Driving:Some drivers still need reminding over the holiday season

The festive season is here and now is thetime to decorate your home for Christmas.Rather than feel like this is a chore to bedone alone, why not involve your family andturn it into a fun activity for everyone!

The centrepiece of holiday decorationsis, of course, the majestic Christmas treeadorned with beautiful ornaments. Chooseplastic rather than glass ornaments toremove any danger of younger childrenbreaking them. If your ornaments arelooking a little worn, you can freshen themup with a coat of silver or gold paint, orcreate new ones with different decorativeobjects, such as pine cones.Irresistible Christmas ornaments

You can also create someunique Christmas ornaments.Styrofoam balls and gluecan be found in art supplystores or in the arts and craftssection of any departmentstore and there are endlessways of decorating them.

You can cover the ballswith all sorts of differentmaterials: Papier-mâché,fabric, felt, silk paper, metallicsequins, pearls, colouredcardboard discs, etc. Useseveral different coloursand materials if you wantto create a colourful effectfor your Christmas tree orsimply limit yourself to oneor two materials with similar

colours for a more conservative style. To hang the ornaments on the tree,

insert hooks from old ornaments into theStyrofoam or use paper clips that have been cut in two.Spiced citrus fruits

Apart from the Christmas tree, otherdecorations can embellish your homeincluding an illuminated centrepiece trimmedwith evergreens, a salt dough garland or papersnowflakes glued to the windows. If you lovehome perfumes you could create a decorativebowl of spiced citrus fruits. Just stick somewhole cloves into a few oranges, clementines,or tangerines.

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Decorating the house for Christmas...a great family activity!

Donations NeededWell it’s that time of year again.

The white snow falls (sometimes)and it’s cold. We turn on ourfireplace, turn up the Christmasstation on the radio, put on ourfluffy bunny slippers and sipeggnog and rum. We get togetherwith family and laugh till thewee hours of the morning. We’veshopped for our furry fur kids andthey have more presents under thetree than you do. More toys withthose amazing squeakers, squishybeds, shiny bowls and treats galore!

But this isn’t Christmas foreveryone. To some this is the timeof year where it’s just plain coldand lonely.

Given the nature of our businessit’s time for us to pull up our socks, and help the fur kids in need, andCoquitlam Animal Shelter is justthe place to start. Here at HealingPaws we feel that every fur kiddeserves to feel like they are themost special thing ever. While wecan’t be there to comfort and loveand care for them… we can at leasthelp bring others together whohave hearts like we do, to help themget those toys with the amazingsqueakers, squishy beds, shinybowls…and treats GALORE!

For your convenience, bringgoodies to Healing Paws VeterinaryCare and we’ll deliver the goods foryou. Help by donating blankets, towels, toys or even cash. Anythinghelps.

Survey finds British Columbia makingstrides in green holiday traditions.

According to a recent Ipsos Reid surveycommissioned by Waste Management looking atCanadians’ environmental behaviours duringthe holidays, British Columbia is among theleaders in holiday sustainability.

British Columbians have a relatively goodawareness of recycling programs in theircommunities but still trail behind otherprovinces when it comes to green practicesduring the holidays. Nine out of ten (91%) ofBritish Columbians know that they can recycletheir Christmas trees, but only half (55%) areusing reusable bags while shopping, fallingbehind Quebec with 65 per cent.

“Plastic bags are a difficult material todeal with in the waste stream,” said WasteManagement spokesperson, Chris Lynch. “Whilemore plastic bags are being recycled, too manyend up in the landfill, especially during theholidays when consumption is above average.”

When it comes to Christmas decorations,LED lights have been found to be more energyefficient than the incandescent variety. Thesurvey revealed that 56 per cent of BritishColumbians are using LEDs to decorate theirhomes during the holidays, more than Quebecwith 42 per cent, but not quite as many as in theSaskatchewan/Manitoba region with 67 per cent.

“LED tree lights can save 90 per centmore energy than traditional incandescentholiday lights, said Lynch. “With a lifespan ofapproximately 20,000 hours, they can last for 40holiday seasons! LED lights also burn less hotand reduce any risk associated with burns orfires.”

Overall, the survey revealed that Canadiansacross the country are gearing up for a greenholiday season, as public awareness about waste-reducing strategies grows.

Waste Management offers the following tips toCanadians interested in conserving this holidayseason:• When wrapping presents, look for alternatives

to buying new wrapping paper. This will save oncosts and ensure that leftover paper does not goto waste.

• Remember to bring reusable shopping bagswith you to the mall as well as the grocery store,to help reduce the amount of plastic bags in thewaste stream.

• When those new toys come in, make sure theold ones do not end up in the trash. Find a localconsignment store or shelter where you candonate old, working devices and clothing.

• Don’t be shy, re-gift! Re-gifting unwantedpresents cuts back on holiday spending andwaste.

• Recycle your Christmas tree! Manycommunities have tree-mulching programsthat will compost your tree after the holidays.Contact your community’s works departmentto find out if there’s a program in yourcommunity. The full Ipsos Reid survey survey results can

The BC SPCA is urging you togo “wild” with your gift-giving thisholiday season. For that person onyour list who loves wildlife and theenvironment, how about honouringthem by sponsoring a special wildanimal in need in their name?

This year the BC SPCA WildAnimal Rehabilitation Centre (WildARC) treated 10% more animalsthan ever before, from tiny babyhummingbirds to eagles, owls, otters and deer fawns. One of WildARC’s biggest costs caring for such

diverse species is the wide varietyof food they eat. Although somefoods are donated by businesses andindividuals, many items are highlyspecialized and must be purchasedfrom unique suppliers in EasternCanada and the U.S. More animalsmeans more food, and this extrafood is a strain on limited financialresources as Wild ARC relies almostexclusively on public donations.

Help wildlife and scratch off thosehard to buy for people from your listthis year by giving a little wild gift.

A selection of special wild animalscan be sponsored via our websiteat www.wildarc.com. Donationlevels range from $25 to $100 and aretax deductible. Your gift recipientwill receive a beautiful wildlifee-card or printable card featuringstunning photographs from ourannual wildlife photography contest.Sponsorship certificates can alsobe purchased. You can obtain themdirectly from Wild ARC at 1020Malloch Road in Metchosin, or bycalling 250-478-9453.

THE TRI-CITY NEWSA special edition of

Part of the charm and traditionof the holiday season are thelights: colourful twinkling lightsbrightening up the long nights andlighting up people’s homes. Withthat in mind, BC Hydro is offeringsome helpful tips on how to enjoya bright, safe and energy-efficientholiday season.Choose LED seasonal lights.LED lights last 10 times longerthan incandescent lights, are moredurable, and don’t heat up makingthem safer to use. Decoratingwith LED bulbs is 90% moreefficient than using incandescentbulbs. If you have your lights upall December for an average of 6

hours a day, you could save over $20by using LEDs versus incandescentbulbs.Tips for outdoor lights:• Use Canadian Standards

Association (CSA)-approvedlights, cords, plugs and socketsthat are marked for outdoor useor wet locations.

• Be careful with the ladder! Getsomeone to hold the bottom of theladder so that it doesn’t move orsecure your ladder by tying it offand staking it to the ground.

• Before you put light strings on ashrub, tree or your house, checkthem for breaks or signs ofdeterioration. Replace any light

strings with frayed cords or looseconnections.

• Keep electrical connections offthe ground. Use eave clips orinsulated staples, rather thannails and tacks, to hold lightstrings in place.

• Keep wiring clear of metal partssuch as ornamental railings anddrainpipes, to prevent any risk ofshock from an electrical current.

• Turn off your holiday lightsbefore going to bed, and neverleave lights on when you areaway from home, unless they areconnected to a timer or photocell.

• Take down your lights after theholidays! Don’t leave them up

year-round. Cords and bulbs willdeteriorate, reducing their safetyand shortening their life.

Safety tips for your tree:• Keep your tree at least three feet

away from heat vents, baseboardsand fireplaces.

• Secure your tree so pets andchildren can’t knock it over.

• Replace broken bulbs and lightsets that have cracked or corrodedsockets, frayed plugs, bare wiresor loose connections.

If you’re using a real tree:• Keep your tree fresh by sawing

off an inch or two from the trunkbase at an angle. Immediatelyplace the tree in a water-filled, no-

tip stand and regularly check tomake sure the tree stand alwayshas plenty of water.

• Unplug the lights before wateringthe tree.

• Keep cords and lights away fromthe water.

• Keep a fire extinguisher handyand your smoke detectors in goodworking order.

If you’re using an artificialtree:• Make sure your artificial tree is

not flammable.• Keep metallic trees away from

electrical cords or plugs. For more information, visit
