Police and partners set community challengeLocal police have launched an initiative to recruit 1000 new Neighbourhood Watch members in just one week.Challenge 1000 will take place during National Neighbourhood Watch Week (18th - 25th June) and will target locations in Shildon, as well as in Newton Aycliffe, Chilton, Spennymoor and Sedgefield.Police have carefully identified crime areas where there is no Neigh-bourhood Watch.Beat Officers, supported by Durham County Council Wardens, will be calling at households throughout the week of action, encourag-ing residents to join. The scheme is free to join and offers potentially safer neighbourhoods and reduced levels of crime. Members often also enjoy reductions on household insurance premiums.
Neil Langthorne, Police Community Liaison Officer said, “We have seen what can be achieved with the support of the community. Last year we experienced significant reductions in crime, with burglary falling to an almost all-time low.“What we are setting out to achieve is chal-lenging, and through the Challenge 1000 initiative we hope to capture the public’s imagination and build on an already string membership.”Existing members are being asked to introduce friends and relatives to the scheme. Police believe that the intervention of neigh-bourhood Watch members recently prevented the theft of two caravans in Newton Aycliffe. Anyone interested in joining can do so by calling their Police Community Liaison Officer on 0345 60 60 365.

Footballing memories
The recent Royal Wedding brought memories flooding back for many of other royal occasions over the years. Jim Morland dug out this old photograph
of Shildon County Modern School football team from the Coronation Year, 1953.It’s interesting to see how the lads grew over the years and how new faces
came into the team. No doubt these pictures will bring back lots of fond memories of action both on and off the school field all those years ago.
Many of these young lads can still be seen walking the streets of Shildon, maybe now not so young but we’re sure that you’ll recognise a few of them!
The line up, back row left to right being: Mr. Newby, B. Storey, H. Sedgewick, J. Morland, A. Anderson, N. Cockburn, A. Dickinson and Mr. Waine. Front row left to right: B. Conlon, P. Bowron, T. Hutchinson, I. Hunter, S. Burton.

Dear Editor,
I have to say I am disgusted at the council after my 23 month-old daughter fell down a drain in Laurel court.
The 3 small drains had no covers and sharp pieces sticking out that could cause serious injury to a small child.
My daughter was extremely lucky not to break her leg, but did suffer very nasty scrapes and scratches.
The drains were reported to the council once on Wednesday and again on Friday and the council STILL haven't been to fix them.
We have had no option but to fill them and cover them as best we can in order to prevent another child getting seriously hurt.

New and existing donors who are eligible to donate are encouraged to celebrate this event by making an appointment at their local session during the summer period.Donated blood is used
not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia. Currently 7,000 units of blood are needed everyday to help save the lives of sick and injured patients across England and North Wales yet only four per cent of the eligible population give blood.Darren Bowen from NHSBT, said, “Blood has a limited shelf life of 35 days for red blood cells and just five days for platelets. Because of this, it is important that both existing and new blood
donors come forward and donate regularly so we can ensure that vital supplies of blood are available for the patients that need them.”Blood donors can donate three times a year and the process of giving blood takes around an hour - with the actual donation taking about ten minutes. Booking an appointment in advance minimises waiting times and allows you to select a location and time to donate that suits you.A session will be held at Shildon Methodist Church Hall on Friday 24th June from 2.30pm to 3.45pm and again from 4.30pm to 7pm. Visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

I hear a human voiceBut no, hang on, just wait a moIt’s the dreaded OPTION CHOICE
Number one’s no good, nor number twoAnd nor is number three
They are far removed from taking meWhere I want to be
Numbers four and five are uselessSo I click on number sixAnother set of options
Now I’m really feeling sick! Finally I reach at last
A lady known as EmmaI explain to her in detailThe cause of my dilemma“I’m sorry I can’t help youIt’s not that I don’t care
You need another departmentWait, I’ll transfer you there”
I wait and wait and wait and wait and waitTrying not to feel rejected
I hear a click, a humming soundOh no! I’m disconnected!
With pounding head and heart like leadI admit defeat
I make myself a cup of teaAnd something nice to eat
Later on today when I’ve calmed downAnd feel a little better
I’ll sit me down in a nice armchairAnd WRITE A B*****D LETTER!!
