NOVEMBER LECTIONARY READINGS

Page 3: “The Tidings”

Why do we sing? The primary purpose of music in the church is to glorify God. The Colossians, Ephesians, and Corinthians were all told to make music as a way of teaching each other, building the church, and most importantly, praising God. The Psalms instruct us to sing joyfully unto the Lord. The First Book of Chronicles calls for all the earth to sing the Lord’s good news and tell of His salvation. Music helps create an environment for worship. It inclines our hearts, minds, and spirits to further accept, understand, and connect to His Word. The organist and choir guide us in singing together, uniting our voices as one in praise and thanksgiving. This is the role of our music ministry, which is made possible through your giving. With increased contributions, we could enhance this ministry. We could make vocal training for our singers more accessible, so that they may more effectively lead the church in singing God's praise. We could recruit outside singers to boost our choir, allowing for a full set of skilled musicians each week. We could even invite guest musicians to provide special music, adding variety to our musical offerings. During this season of stewardship, consider the spiritual benefit our music ministry provides, and what it could provide in the future with your help. Thank you, and God bless, Justin Walker Chancel Choir Director

My friends,

Every year November brings us to Thanksgiving. In face of these challenging days of COVID-19, you would think that there is not much to be thankful for, several hundred thousand people in the U.S. have died and millions are sicker with the virus. Our church has wrestled with how to worship, study, outreach, and fellowship safely and faithfully as the body of Christ. There is a simmering stress and strained tension in society today that hangs over us like the dust cloud over Pig-Pen in the Peanuts comic strip.

As we move into November, I am reminded of thanksgiving by our worship’s focusing on the letters of Paul for the first four Sundays of the month. The Sunday before Thanksgiving the sermon scripture is specifically the “Thanksgiving” of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Dr. Fred Craddock writes about letters at the time of Paul: “In the conventional Greek letter, the salutation was followed by a thanksgiving…. Paul developed this convention in such a way that the thanksgiving provided a substantial theological preamble to the letter, signaling its main themes.” (596, The People’s New

Testament Commentary) This letter to the Ephesians also contained a “Blessing,” which here is a long continuous sentence in the Greek, before the “Thanksgiving.” Paul remembered what he was thankful for in the church he wrote; for example, “We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:3); “When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus” (Philemon 4-5); and “I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers” (Ephesians 1:15-16). All of the letters of Paul have some form of thanksgiving, except Galatians probably because he was writing with a touch of anger mingled with urgency. These days of global pandemic in the month of November, I think we need to number our thanksgivings.

Dear Pineda Family,

Our deepest appreciation to each of you for your prayers during

my lengthy illness. Your loving text messages, phone calls, emails,

and beautiful cards have meant so very much to me. I have kept

each wonderful card, filled with the most inspiring messages, next

to me, and I re-read them often for encouragement and hope.

This has, indeed, been both a physical and spiritual journey for me,

and Jim and I have appreciated your unending support,

understanding, and encouraging words along each step.

We could not have made the journey without each of you.

With heartfelt thanksgiving and God's richest blessings,

Denise and Jim Moran

Pastor’s Thanksgiving Message continued

What are you thankful for? If the Apostle Paul were to write to us, the Pinedans in Palm Shores, Florida, during these unusual days of COVID-19, I think Paul would be thankful for our faithfulness to God and love of one another; the Session who took the leadership role in appointing a Congregation Reopening Task Force (CRTF) to guide us through these rough seas; the CRTF co-chairs and team who drew up a thoughtful, workable, and safe plan; the church office and secretary who continues to be the point person for all communications and programs; the elders and their teams who carried out the CRTF’s plan for reopening worship and meetings; the Sunshine Learning Center who courageously reopened safely; the Diaconate who stayed in touch and continues to offer pastoral care to their care groups; the faithful church members and friends, who with great commitment to our Lord and His church, continue to give to the church, to pray for the church and world, and to serve to tell the good news of Jesus and his love; and “Cecil B. DeMille” a.k.a. Bill Purtill, who created virtual worship by generously working with musicians and vocalists, the preacher, the office, and the Session. Maybe there is a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving month of November.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you,

Rev. Dr. Jim Moran
