Time is precious. It is often said that one can tell what is important to an individual by how that individual chooses to spend their time. Lent for me is always a good time to examine how I spend my time and make some hon-est assessments and changes. Am I making good use of my free time? Are the things I am doing worthwhile? What can I do to grow in my spiritual life on my Lenten journey?

Always in the back of my mind is my little voice saying: “You need to slow down and spend more time with the Lord.” For someone who works directly for the Church and thinks about liturgy on a daily basis, I still need to remember to spend more time with God - even just to be quiet in His pres-ence. It’s easy to think about what’s wrong or what needs to be fixed while attending Mass every weekend. Just being silent, trying to listen to what God is telling me, is difficult at times when I’m so focused on preparing lit-urgies and other events during Lent.

Our parish Lenten activities offer many options for spending more time with the Lord to nourish ourselves. S.O.U.P. (Sharing Ourselves with Undernourished People) at Our Lady of the Rosary Hall on Wednesday eve-nings provides us with physical nourishment, while our weekly Taize prayer on Thursday evenings provides us with quiet time to listen to God. We can join a discussion group to talk about the book “Rediscover Catholism” - the book that was gifted to everyone at Christmas, or perhaps attend our weekly Spirituality Tuesday sessions to feed our minds, or go to Confession on Wednesday evenings to nourish our souls. What path will your Lenten journey take you? . . . Nora Lundin, Director of Liturgy & Music

“Catholic Interpretation of Scripture; how it has changed over the last 100 years”, with special guest speaker Fr. Jose Rubio.

Christians believe that the Bible is inspired; that the Scriptures are true. At the same time, we affirm that biblical truth is not necessarily the same as historical truth. There has been a resurgence of Catholic biblical scholarship since the first half of the 20th century. What caused this biblical renewal in the Church? Why was it necessary? How has this “progressive revelation” impacted the World Church and our worship today?

Fr. Rubio is a very knowledgeable and able speaker. He has studied Scripture in depth, some of the Gospels in their original language. He has much to teach us. Remember the words of St. Jerome: “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”. Please join us as we learn about scripture and our Church at St. Albert Hospitality Center, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

scrutInIes WIth the elect

Over the next two weekends, at the 10:30am Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary, we will celebrate the rites of penance and purification with our elect who are preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. The purpose of these rites is to uncover all that would lead them away from Christ, so that they might be able to come to a full Christian life. The support of a parish community is vital to this process. At the same time, these brief rites call us, the baptized, to uproot the sin in our lives so as to be more faithful to our own baptism. We will be using Cycle A Readings.

Why I don’t attend sunday Mass. I have sMall chIldren

Oh, they’re the worst. Noisy little things... I have them, too. You know, the first thing they do when they exit the womb is scream? And it doesn’t stop there—if you bring them to Church they will choose the quietest time of Mass to scream like you’re murdering them—the homily, the Consecration—they know how to pick it. When my kids were little, I used to get ready for Mass and wonder what fresh hell I was in for this week. There were Sundays when my husband would take one of my screaming, writhing kids out of Church and I’d wonder if I would ever see either of them again (not enough to follow them, mind you, just enough to quietly ponder). So, why did we put ourselves through it? Because now they come with us cheerfully—not perfectly—but cheerfully enough. I still have to sit between them and give them the hairy eyeball once in a while, but dang if they aren’t listening. Church is what we do on Sunday. It’s the main event and the rest of our day and the rest of our week is better for it. (2 in a series).
