GOOD NEWSr Samuel r6:rb , *7, to.t3a lEphesians 5:8-14 John 9:t-41 or g:1, 6-9, r3-r7 34-38
"Do you see what l'm saying?"The question came at the end of a difficult conversation about a hurtful
remark l'd made. I hadn't intended it to hurt*l was going for a cheap laugh
in a group of people, and I got it. But, as my colleague made clearto me, thelaugh came at the expense of her comfort and, to some extent, her dignity.
The very fact that she had to call it to my attention meant that I had notbeen paying attention. I didn't "see" her-l saw only myself scoring laugh
points with the seven or eight people we were with. Let's face it: I was blind
to her and to the effect of my words.ln today's Scriptures, Samuel is chastised for his narrow vision because he
believes a king must surely look like Eliab, someone of stature and
importance. He saw only what impressed him. He couldn't look into the
heart as God did, so he didn't see as God did.
The Pharisees, too, are called to account for their own constricted sight,
which couldn't accept that a man born blind might know the presence ofGod more surely than they ever could.
When we're convinced of our own righteousness and consider ourselves
more important than anyone else, we become blind to others and to God.
Today our prayers ask God for holy sight-the grace to see the world and all
in it as God sees.
Many things can make us blind, but God can oPen the eyes of our heart ifwe simply come to him and ask him to help us see.

(-) AtIy friend k doing a Bible study, and part of t?rc program kw somethingcalled Lectio Diuina. Is tlut a Catlntic practke?
This method of listening to Scripture has the Church'sapproval: In October 2ffi8, Catholic bishops recommendedLectio Diuina as an easy way for Catholics to become morefamiliar with the Bible.
The practice of Lectio Diaina is quite simple:1. Askthe Holy Spirit to help you listen. Then slowly read a
short Scripture passage aloud. Listen for a word or phrase
that strikes you.2. Think about why this word is so striking at this moment.
Does this word touch your life right now?3. Ask God's help in making an important choice, or ask
what the word or phrase that struckyou in Step I means
in your life.4. Close your eyes, let go of all thoughts, and remain silent
before God.These parts have a logical progression, but it's not a hard-
and-fast method. People who have been doing lxctio Diuinafor a long time sometimes move back and forth betweenparts. If you do l-eaio Diuina regularly, over time your
understanding of God's Word will deepen.Fr. Rich Potts, CSsR I [email protected]

R.C.I.A. The Scrutinies
Let the Scrutinies Live!
After a scrutiny, I remember a man about 35 years old, - stating duringour reflection after the third scrutiny. "You know, I have always likedall of you (referring to our \eam"). You have been respectful, helpful, present, and genuine in your interest and faith. But something more
happened today at the scrutiny. When I was 5 years old I was in a car
accident in which both of my parents were killed. I have always held
back from trusting people, or God, fully. Today, that got lifted. I
cannot tell you how free I feel, how I can let go into God more fully, and how I even feel no barrier with you. " . . .
These are both profound and life-changing testimonials to the power
of Scrutinies. .This time and opportunity is essential to lead to a
potentially life-changing moment. And, in the mystagogical reflection
after the celebration of a scrutiny I find when people are asked whatthey experienced, they sometimes say, "lt is too deep for words."(exce rpt fro m D o n n a 9teffe n, SQhttp :llwww.te a m rcia.comlzor4lo3llet-the-scruti nies-l ive/
