My dear parishioners of St. James, Our Lady of the Valley, St. Benedict / St. Theresa, Sacred Heart Lumby and visitors:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (Jn. 3: 16).

Our churches are still closed and we can’t be together to celebrate the holy sacrifice of the mass. However, I know you have been faithful to your faith-commitment and devoutly praying in your own home. We are now patiently waiting for the provincial public health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry’s announcement of when and how our churches to reopen for the public mass.

It is so important for us at this time to remember the powerful words of St. Paul speaking to each of us: “who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or naked-ness, or peril, or sword……. nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8: 35-39). The prayer of St. Teresa of Avila is one of my favorite prayers: “Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All thing are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices”.

The 4th Sunday of Lent is called and known as “Rejoice Sun-day” (Laetare Sunday in Lent and Gaudete Sunday in Advent). The true reason for our hopeful joy in this challenging world is the everlasting love of our heavenly Father, the Creator of all things – visible and invisible. This divine amazing love is generously given to us through the birth, life, death and resurrection of His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ (Jn. 3:16).

Have a blessed weekend and a good week.

Fr. Peter Hoan Nguyen.

ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP DIOCESE OF KAMLOOPS

PREPARATION OF THE SOLEMNITY FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH

PRINCIPAL PATRON OF CANADA

Pope Francis has proclaimed this year as the “Year of St. Joseph”, recognizing the 150th

anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Uni-versal Church.

Bishop Joseph is asking the faithful of our Diocese to prepare for the Solemnity Feast of St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church and Canada, on March 19th

by praying a novena prayer each day from March 10 to March 18 inclusive; the novena will be livestreamed each morning at 11:30 am in community prayer from Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops, along with a very short teaching each day about the life of St. Joseph.

On March 19, Bishop Joseph will celebrate Mass commemorating the Solemnity Feast of St. Joseph at Sacred Heart Cathedral; this Mass will be livestreamed beginning at 11:30 am.

NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

Protect, O Holy Guardian, this our nation.

Enlighten those responsible for the common good, so that they might know – like you do – how to care for those entrusted to their responsibility.

Grant intelligence of knowledge to those seeking adequate means for the health and physical well-being of their brothers and sisters.

Sustain those who are spending themselves for those in need, even at the cost of their own safety: volunteers, nurses, doctors who are on the front lines in curing the sick

Bless, O St. Joseph, the Church: beginning with your ministers, make her the sign and instrument of your light and your goodness.

Accompany, O St. Joseph, our families: with prayerful silence, create harmony between parents and their children, in a special way with the youngest.

Preserve the elderly from loneliness: grant that no one might be left in desperation from abandonment and discouragement.

Comfort those who are most frail, encourage those who falter, intercede for the poor. With the Virgin Mother, beg the Lord to liberate the world from every form of pandemic. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

Feast of St Joseph Mass @ St James - March 19

Livestream Mass @ 10 am (link on Parish website) Communion in St James parking lot from 10:30 am to 11:15 am

At the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem, the prophet Simeon foretold that Jesus would be the sign to be opposed by many people. These many people Simeon speaks of are not the Gentiles, that is, foreigners, but Jewish people, Jesus’ own race. As Simeon prophe-sied, from the beginning of his ministry, from his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus faced opposition. Why did his hometown’s people oppose him? Why did they become angry with him?

The people of Nazareth thought that they knew all about Jesus. It seems apparent that the Blessed Virgin and St Joseph did not blab about the mysteries as they raised Jesus. His mother kept all the divine works to her heart as the gospel writes. What the people of Nazareth saw was an average, rather a poor family of a carpenter. They assumed that Jesus was no different from them. And now, suddenly, this Jesus claimed that he was something like a prophet! They despised him.

Moreover, Jesus sounded like insulting and demeaning the national pride of the Jews. The Jews at the time of Jesus were under the oppression of the Gentiles. And their memories of the Babylon exiles were still vivid. But Jesus was speaking about the blessing of the Gentiles!

Throughout his public ministry, Jesus exposed the inner thoughts of many. And this brought about much resistance and resentment among the people, particularly the Jewish leaders. It eventually led to his cruci-fixion.

But the story does not end with his crucifixion. Jesus is still a sign of op-position in our times. Just as he was opposed by the Jews at his time, so is he opposed by Christians in our times. Do you think that only atheists and materialists created the current anti-Christian atmosphere and the decline of the faith? Many baptized Christians have contributed to these currents. They believe that they know Jesus enough. And these Chris-tians feel they are entitled to enjoy blessings and entry to heaven. How-ever, when Jesus challenges them, they resist him. They even attempt to change the teaching of the faith against the Bible and the Tradition. They despise faithful, orthodox Christians as outdated fundamentalists.

Jesus is still opposed by many of his people. It is why he is still on the crucifix.

Fr. Swann Kim.

CCCB Note on Ethical Concerns Related to

Currently Approved COVID-19 Vaccines

The decision to receive any COVID-19 vaccine is one of individual conscience in

consultation with one’s physician or healthcare provider. Choosing to be vaccinated,

particularly amid the current pandemic, can be an act of charity which recognizes the

need to care for others.

The CCCB echoes the call of the Holy See,1 by reiterating its appeal to governments to

“ensure that COVID-19 vaccines that become available do not create an ethical dilemma

for Canadians,”2 thus encouraging greater vaccine uptake among the general population

and strengthening the common good of our Canadian society.

The recent approvals by Health Canada of the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson

vaccines against COVID-193 have given rise to questions among Catholics about the

moral permissibility of receiving vaccines whose development, production, and/or testing

has involved the use of abortion-derived cell lines. These questions are important for they

concern the sacredness of human life and its inherent dignity.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines already approved in Canada do not use abortion-

derived cell lines in their development and production of the vaccine, however in some of

their final testing processes, they have used unethically-derived cell lines. These two

vaccines currently available in Canada can be morally acceptable for Catholics to receive

since the connection to abortion is extremely remote.

In contrast to these vaccines, the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines utilized

abortion-derived cell lines in their development, production, and confirmatory testing.4

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith makes the distinction between the

1 Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Note on the morality of using some anti-Covid-19 vaccines

(21 December 2020), n. 4 “Both pharmaceutical companies and governmental health agencies are therefore

encouraged to produce, approve, distribute and offer ethically acceptable vaccines that do not create problems of

conscience for either health care providers or the people to be vaccinated.” 2 Letter signed by the CCCB President to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding ethical COVID-19 vaccines

(21 May 2020). 3 https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/news/2021/02/health-canada-authorizes-astrazeneca-and-verity-

The same would be true of any other adenovirus vector vaccines which may be approved by Health Canada in the

future.

- 2 -

differing moral obligations for those who develop such vaccines and those who receive

them. They have reassured Catholics that “when ethically irreproachable Covid-19

vaccines are not available . . . it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that

have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process.”5

Therefore, when provided with a choice between receiving different vaccines, the vaccine

with the least connection to abortion-derived cell lines should always be preferred and

chosen when possible. This means that given the currently approved vaccine options in

Canada, if/when presented with the choice, one should choose to receive either the

Moderna or Pfizer vaccine over the AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccine. When

no choice of vaccine is available, the AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccine (or any

other COVID-19 vaccine that may be approved) “can be used in good conscience with

the certain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constitute formal

cooperation with abortion.”6

Consequently, if it is possible in a given area or local region to choose a vaccine, Pfizer

and Moderna would be recommended at this stage. However, when a choice is not

provided or it is quite difficult to have recourse to these said vaccines, given the health

urgency at hand and other considerations, nothing morally prevents anyone from

receiving in good conscience the AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccines or others

that may eventually be approved which will have been developed, tested and produced in

a similar fashion.
