Who are the Disciples?

“A movement for wholeness in a fragmented world...”

Founded on American soil in the early 1800s as a non-denominational, multi-racial movement led by men and women of faith, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is now an international movement identified with mainstream Protestantism and continues to be widely involved in working toward Christian unity, reconciliation, social justice, higher education, and other such concerns. Disciples are influenced by their founding ideals of our unity in Christ with openness and diversity in practice and belief. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us.

What do Disciples believe?

Like most Christians, Disciples affirm:

* Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God, and offers saving grace to all.

* All persons are God's children and are brothers and sisters in God.

Beliefs and practices common to Disciples are:

* Freedom of Belief – As Disciples, we are called around one essential of faith: a belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their own consciences, guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

* Open Communion – The Lord's Supper, or Communion, is celebrated weekly in worship and is open to all who would seek faith in Jesus Christ.

* The Oneness of the Church – All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.

* Baptism into Christian Life – In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside, washed away, and a new life in Christ begins. Although Disciples typically practice baptism by immersion, other traditions of baptism are accepted, recognized, and honored.

* The Ministry of all Believers – Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service, and spiritual growth.

* Equal Opportunities to Serve – Women and minorities can fully exercise leadership in the church and can be called as ordained clergy.

“In the essentials of faith, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”
