Boat Ramp Updates SMC have been working really hard to get our boat ramp back on track. Work has been continuous

making sure we have as little disruption as possible. The new pontoons, ramps & fish cleaning

facilities are all starting to take shape! With the difficulty of not having the old jetty to tie up to, we

have seen a lot of compromise during this period. Patience and understanding will be the key to a

smooth Easter at the boat ramp this year, take care on the

water.

News from our Maritime Museum!

Written by Venetia Beaney During March, April and possibly May we are exhibiting a panel display

from the Australian National Museum, Shackleton: Escape from

Antarctica. The story of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic expedition thrilled

thousands of visitors during its run in Sydney and we are delighted to

have the opportunity of sharing it with visitors to Port Albert Maritime

Museum. The exhibition brings together first hand accounts and dramatic

photographs telling the compelling story of Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-

Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17 and his bid to stay alive. We are open

every day from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

During February we had visitors from as far afield as United Kingdom,

Holland, New Caledonia, New Zealand and possibly many others who did

not sign our visitors book.

Closer to home visitors came from South Australia, New South Wales,

Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania. Even closer to home we

hosted folk from Melbourne, Latrobe Valley, North East Victoria and

Western Districts. One of the remarks made in our visitors book read “

deserving of more space and funding.”......how true.

Beautiful Port Albert attracts visitors from near and far every month.

Nautical Trivia.

As The Crow Flies.

The most direct route from one place to another without detours. Before

modern navigational systems existed British vessels customarily carried a

cage of crows. These birds fly straight to the nearest land when released

at sea, thus indicating where the nearest land was.

Wellington Shire News!

Farmers urged to recycle Silage Wrap

Wellington Shire Council is pleased to inform farmers that we will

again provide an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your

silage wrap this year.

Last year, with assistance from local farmers, we

collected more than 10 tonnes of silage wrap to recycling.

Recycling silage wrap not only helps farmers to reduce

their agricultural waste it also promotes the ‘clean, green’

image of the farming industry in our area.

Farmers can pick up second hand Bulka bags for free

from our Sale Depot, Finegan Crt, Sale. The silage wrap

collection will be at Yarram & Kilmany transfer stations

from Monday 16 July to Monday 13 August, from 8am –

5pm. Council is offering a subsidised fee for disposal, at

$11 per Bulka bag.

Port Albert Streets and Drains Upgrade Proposal

Wellington Shire Council held a Community meeting at Port Albert Hall on Friday 9 March with a really

good turn out. 3 sessions were held over the course of the day to explain the opportunity to upgrade

our streets, drainage & costs. The next stage to this project will be a community survey, to be ran

during April & May 2018. Please provide your feedback and opinions to this survey, our voice is

everything!Information from the Community meeting and the proposed works can be found on the

Coast Guard News!

Written by Neville Lowe On Saturday afternoon Terry and crew were sent to Singapore Deep

Welshpool to find a boat that would not start, after searching along

multiple channels for some time they returned home only to be told that

the person in trouble got his boat to start, got back to boat ramp at Port Welshpool, rang

triple zero to report he was back but the message wasn’t passed on to the crew on our boat.

Congratulations to Rob & Ulla Killury at the Port Albert General

Store!

increase in visitors certainly shows. Well done!
