It had been the capital of India during British rule till 1912. The city continues to spawn generations of poets, writers, film producers and Nobel laureates. Kolkata is home to four best Nobel laureates - Rabindranath Tagore, Ronald Ross, Mother Teresa and Amartya Sen. I hope delegates will take time and visit the beautiful city.

Over the years the Indian Sugar Industry has gone a long way in modernizing the processes, equipments, systems and controls. The country has several well established organizations capable of setting of complete sugar plants, co-generation of power and ethanol plants. Today, India is not only the largest sugar producing country but also a prominent exporter of sugar machinery throughout the world. In conjunction with the Convention, an International Sugar Expo 2019 – a concurrent Exposition of Product and Services for the Sugar and Allied Industry is also being held. The delegates will have an opportunity to meet and interact with nearly 80 service providers ranking from turn-key sugar plant manufacturers to small and medium enterprises who would be displaying their latest products, processes and services.

thI have pleasure in informing that the 77 Annual Convention of The Sugar Technologists Association of India (STAI) is scheduled from 17-19 July 2019 at the state-of-the-art Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Kolkata, West Bengal. This is the first time that STAI Annual Convention will be taking place in the state of West Bengal.

This largest congregation of sugar technocrats is likely to be attended by nearly 800-1000 national and international experts representing different streams of sugar and allied industries. This will be an excellent opportunity to share new ideas, experiences, researches and technologies relevant for the inclusive growth of the contemporary sugar industry. The convention has gained prominence with every passing year and its fulfilling its objective of advancement of the technology and dissemination of knowledge amongst its members.

Keeping in view the significance of the event and the limited number of technical papers to be accepted and presented during the convention, the authors are requested to write quality papers, giving their latest innovations, enclosing the precise data with the achievements of their research work and its usefulness to the sugar industry. Kolkata mainly gained importance in the times of British rule as it had been the capital of India till the year 1912. At present, although it is no more the capital of India, it is the capital of West Bengal and is one of the most important places of cultural workshop and industrial center.

Kolkata mirrors warmth, culture, creativity, intellectualism and artistic development considering that Kolkata is the home to four best Nobel laureates - Rabindranath Tagore, Ronald Ross, Mother Teresa and Amartya Sen. However, it is the Durga Puja during which Kolkata is at its best and the most resplendent. Still, it doesn't in any way lag behind during either Eid or Christmas or New Year. Irrespective of where you are from, you will feel at home in this city - in Kolkata. Furthermore, there are so many places to be visited in this city of joy that you will be spoilt for choice.

While Kolkata was one of the best examples of British rule in the past, at present it is a kaleidoscope of contrasting ideas, life and culture, which would be found nowhere else in the world. Kolkata is the best example of both the old and new, the orient and the occident, where lives both the poor and the rich.

SIGHTSEEING TOUR OF KOLKATA

The major tourist attractions of the city are : Mother House - the headquarters of the international religious congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. It has been home to Saint Mother Teresa and her sisters from February 1953 to the present day. Majestic Victoria Memorial - a marble structure built in memory of Queen Victoria which is a blend of Mughal and British architecture and exhibits paintings, miniatures, statues and books, through which people can get an in-depth knowledge of Indian history. Parasnath Jain Temple dedicated to Parshwanath who was the 23rd Jain Tirthankar, and he is worshipped by the Jains. Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family where one can see a great collection of paintings, books, photographs and manuscripts of Tagore and other 19th-century personalities. Drive past through Colonial Calcutta and drive over Howrah Bridge or Vidyasagar Bridge.

Attractive sightseeing tours of Kolkata city will be organized for the accompanying persons (spouse only) during the convention.
