My Dear Friends,
This weekend, Catholic Christians
celebrate the Feast of Ss. Peter &
Paul. We at the Basilica Shrine of St.
Mary have a special reason to
celebrate, for this is the weekend we
will formally install our new
umbrellino and tintinnabulum,
symbols of a basilica. These objects
will sit on either side of the altar to
remind everyone of the privilege of being named a basilica by the Vatican.
Both of these gifts have been generously donated by Dr. Ted Gasper & his
family. The umbrellino is being given in honor of Sr. Isaac, and the
tintinnabulum is given as a memorial to Dr. Mary Dix McDuffie Gasper
who passed away almost a year ago.
An umbrellino, or “little umbrella,” is a distinctive symbol of basilicas
throughout the world. Each umbrella is striped with red and yellow, the
papal colors. This silk canopy is a symbol of papal authority. In the
middle ages, such umbrellas would be carried over the pope in
processions.
Once it is placed, the umbrellino stays partially open as a symbol of
readiness to welcome the pope. Every umbrellino in the world is hand-
made and is unique. Our umbrellino will feature 4 coat-of-arms, those of:
the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, Pope Francis, the Diocese of Raleigh, and
Bishop Michael Burbidge.
The tintinnabulum, or bell mounted on a pole, indicates that the Basilica
Shrine of St. Mary has a special relationship with the pope.
The tintinnabulum consists of a small gold bell within a hand-carved
wooden frame accented with gold leaf surrounded by the papal tiara, the
crown traditionally worn by the pope. It also has the papal keys (Matthew
16: 13-19). Above the bell is a hand-carved coat-of-arms of the Basilica
Shrine of St. Mary.
On the reverse side of the St. Mary coat-of-arms medallion is a hand
carved figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she appears above the altar of
repose in the basilica. In the middle ages, churches used the tintinnabulum
to alert the people of Rome that the pope was approaching.
We should all be very thankful for the opportunity to be alive to
experience this historic event!
On another note, in case you were wondering why the St. Mary campus
had so many trucks present the other week, it was because part of the
movie, “The Longest Ride,” was being filmed in our Tileston Center.

“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God” Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the mes-sage of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experi-encing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer
Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusive-ly from home. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation.

St. Mary Nursery News
The parish nursery could use some more volunteers. The nursery is
available during the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. On average the volun-
teers are only in the nursery one Sunday a month. If you are interested

St. Mary and Father Bob are the subject of a great essay in the June 2014

parishioner and author Paul Wilkes highlights the amazing vitality under
Father Bob’s leadership over the past seven years that has renewed the

St. Mary Young Families News Coffee and donuts: Join us for fellowship and donuts in the school cafeteria (door is opposite the little playground in the parking lot) on this Sunday after the 9:30 Mass. Newcomers welcome! Meals on Wheels: Starting in July, we will have a regular monthly Weekend Meals on Wheels day. We did a trial run in May, and it went well. We will need people to cook and people to deliver food. You can do one or both, and children are welcome. St. Elisabeth Convent, Minsk, Belarus
St. Elisabeth Convent patronizes a large psychiatric hospital, runs
a rehabilitation center, and a shelter for the homeless. Many people who
come to the Convent for help become involved and produce beautiful
artifacts in its workshops together with the sisters. Many of them remain
here forever and find a way to normal life.
Sr. Irina and Sr. Julia will visit the Basilica on July 26 – 27 where they
will arrange a small sale of religious articles and souvenirs from their
Convent to support vulnerable people who they take care of.

“Via Cruces” - Meditation Garden
Dr. and Mrs. Richard Tamisiea extend an invitation for St. Mary parish-
ioners and guests to visit their meditation garden trail and pray the Sta-
tions of the Cross. No phone call or arrival announcement is necessary.
The meditation garden is located at 6207 Fox Run Road in Wilmington.
Take the second road right off of Old Military Road which is off of
Greenville Loop, near Bradley Creek Elementary School. Enter the
driveway and park. “Via Cruces” is to your left.
They hope that many will take advantage of this garden experience for
reflection and devotion to our Lord.

Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve
will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a
time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a
series of great martyrs who remained faithful
in the face of persecution by political power—
St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and
Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this
year's Fortnight focuses on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable
in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching.
All are invited to join with Bishop Burbidge in the celebration of Mass
during the Fortnight for Freedom on Thursday, June 26 at 6:00 pm at
St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary. A reception/picnic
sponsored by the Knights of Columbus will follow the service. The Mass
is an opportunity to participate in the 14-day Diocesan observance of the
Fortnight for Freedom focusing on prayer, education and peaceful public
action to protect our right to religious liberty. In addition, please bring
baby formula and diapers as a donation to Catholic Charities in honor of
the theme of this year’s Fortnight which includes a dimension of service.

Diocese of Raleigh Advance Directive
Legal and medical issues related to the planning for the end of life can be com-plicated and difficult. The Diocese of Raleigh has created a resource which expresses our Catholic teaching about the sanctity and beauty of life, while as-sisting the faithful in the practical decisions that must be made at the end of life. This Advance Directive document, which includes a Healthcare Power of Attorney with definitions, instructions and the appointment of a health care agent, was prepared in consultation with both Catholic Bioethics and legal ex-perts in the applicable laws of the State of North Carolina. This resource is recommended to you for your use to assist in creating a legal document that reflects your wishes for the end of your own life or that of your loved one. The Diocese will celebrate Natural Family Planning at the Annual Mass

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles — Sister Isaac
It really happens that a saint’s feast day outranks a Sunday during the
Church Year. However, that is what is happening this weekend and here at
St. Mary’s we have several reasons to celebrate with Peter and Paul.
First of all, because we have been named a Basilica, the Feast of these two
great apostles will always be singled out as a special day to celebrate at St.
Mary’s. Responding to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit, Peter and Paul
were among the first people to bring the joy of the Gospel to the faithful.
Secondly, on this particular day, you will see an umbrella and a bell
carried in procession and placed in the sanctuary. They are symbols of a
Basilica. For me, an umbrella reminds me of being protected from stormy
weather and heat, and the bell reminds me to celebrate and pay attention to
just what is going on around us. Our Church, founded by Jesus Christ, is a
visible symbol of unity of all people coming together to praise a
compassionate, loving God who calls each one of us to share His Love.
That’s why we have a ministry that reaches out to our brothers and sisters.
So here are two questions….How do you respond to Jesus’ question, “But
who do you say that I am?” and how does the fact that we share in God’s
love and come to this Basilica to proclaim Jesus affect the way that I live
out my day to day existence? Happy Feast Day!

Special Need of the Week
As we prepare for the final month of Outreach before closing for the
month of August we could still use beds, sofas, tables and chairs as our
list of requests is quite long. Also, if your child’s back pack has some
decent life in it we will be happy to take it off your hands as we always
have requests for them at the beginning of the school year. The diapers
that the Immaculate Conception Church shared with us have all been
distributed, so we can use any size diapers that you might be able to

Join Bishop Burbidge and our Diocesan family for Catholic Family Day at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on August 17, 2014. Show your Catholic spirit by wearing your parish or school colors as we gather for prayer, for an all-you-can-eat picnic inside the ball field, and then to watch the Durham Bulls take on the Charlotte Knights. The cost is $25 for adults/youth 6 years and older, $13 for children 3-5 years and no charge for 2 years and under. There will be pre-game admittance through the third base entrance. Prayer will begin at 2:45 pm with the picnic to follow. The Game starts at 5:05 pm.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Catholic Bishops of the United States
have called for a nationwide effort to ad-
vance a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through
prayer, penance, and sacrifice.
Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray for rebuilding a
culture favorable to life and marriage and for increased protection of
religious liberty.
The goal of this call to prayer is twofold:
1. to increase awareness of these challenges and
2. to build spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful so that we
can be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope, and charity and
agents of the New Evangelization.
The Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty has five com-
ponents:
Monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours in cathedrals and parishes
Daily Rosary by families and individuals
Special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses
Fasting and abstinence from meat on Friday
A Fortnight of Freedom

Bishop Burbidge and I are pleased to announce that Ms. Kimberly Browning has accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent of In-structional Services. Ms. Browning’s start date will be July 7th. In this role, Ms. Browning will serve as the primary diocesan official responsible for the instructional and support programs of our Catholic schools. Ms. Browning will also have oversight of the diocesan early childhood cen-ters. Since June of 2008, Ms. Browning has served as a Principal in the Diocese of Cleveland. Her first position was with Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School and most recently with St. Barnabas Catholic School. Ms. Browning graduated from Ursuline College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management, a Master of Arts in Elementary Educa-tion and a Master of Arts in Education Administration/Supervision. Ms. Browning’s numerous professional affiliations include serving on the Ohio Catholic Education Association Conference Convention’s Planning Team, membership on the Diocese of Cleveland’s Professional Develop-ment Committee, President of the Elementary Principal’s Association of the Diocese of Cleveland, serving on the Association for Supervision of Curriculum Development and the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators. Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund An anonymous donor has established the “Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund”
to provide tuition assistance for children of a single parent or those who
are African American or Hispanic that wish attend St. Mary Catholic
School.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO PUT IN A NEW GYM FLOOR IN TILESTON!! The original Tileston gym floor was placed in 1954 and is used by many groups in our community. The Tileston Gymnasium, is a facility used by the St. Mary School for daily PE classes and team sports including boys and girls basketball, volleyball and intramural sports. It is a popular practice venue for many local sports teams including Cape Fear Fencing Club and community basketball teams (Halo Hoops). These teams are run by volunteers and token rents are charged to encourage community use. While the small fees somewhat cover the minimum maintenance and upkeep, larger repairs and up fits are needed from time to time to maintain a safe and appropriate facility. By offering this new and unique recognition/advertising opportunity for area businesses, we hope to create a source of revenue which will be used to accom-plish specific upgrades to the Tileston Gym as needed. Our current goal is to replace the gymnasium floor. The expected cost of this project is $60,000. The banner advertising program is an excellent way to support area sports, the renovation of this historic facility and to effectively display your business! Banners displaying your company name and full color logo will hang prominently in the gym and be viewed by hundreds of families weekly throughout the year! Donations of ALL amounts are welcome and appreciated however, the Banner Program is in recognition of contributions at Gold, Bronze & Silver levels. er, Suzanne Smith, spend a morning harvesting their cabbage for
Sister Isaac’s Social Ministry.
Admissions: St. Mary Catholic School welcomes students of all religions and ethnic origin. In the admission process, preference is given to siblings of students presently enrolled in Kindergarten through 7th grades and members of all Catholic parishes including families from out-of-town parishes. Applicants are invited to visit the school and to meet the principal and the other members of the staff and student body. Previous academic records are reviewed, and parents are asked to provide as much information as possible regarding their child's educational experiences, needs, and interests. In order to understand the child's educational background more clearly, the administration may contact the child's previous teachers and/or principal. Every effort is made to meet the needs of children of all learning styles and abilities. St. Mary Catholic School is limited in its resources to provide individual programs or staff for exceptional students. The principal makes final decisions for admissions. The admissions process includes registration forms, payment of registration and book fees, and arrangement for the payment of tuition.
