Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, I hope you are enjoying the magnificent fall weather we have been having! Our Faith Formation ministry is bursting at the seams this year with kids of all ages coming from hither and yon! What a wonderful thing it is to see so many young people getting to learn about Jesus and our Catholic Christian Faith! At this time of year, we also begin our classes to prepare non-baptized persons for baptism as the Easter Vigil Mass. With them, we also prepare baptized persons for First Communion and Confirmation. Here at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, we have 3 branches of this ministry: RCIA for English-speaking adults (Sr. Isaac); RICA for Spanish-speaking adults (Norma Rivera); and RCIC for children & youth (John Walsh). If you would like to prepare for these sacraments, please contact the person whose name is listed after each ministry. The annual Blessing of the Animals is right around the corner. We’ll have that on Saturday, October 5th at 9 a.m. behind the St. Mary Rectory next to the Pre-K Playground. Live and stuffed animals are most welcome! Also, Oktoberfest is around the corner also. This event, sponsored by Council #1074 of the Knights of Columbus, will be held Saturday, October 12th at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to support St. Mary Cafeteria. Fine food and music will be on tap. On September 14-15th, 50 leaders from the St. Mary Hispanic Ministries were on retreat on our St. Mary Campus. This Joshua Retreat was a very inspirational event, and it helped the community leaders gain renewed zeal for the various ministries they lead in the Hispanic community. At the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, some groups have what are known as “Corporate Communions.” “Corporate” means “formed in one body.” Thus, a “Corporate Communion” is a gathering of a ministry at Mass who receive Communion together. Among the groups who do this routinely at St. Mary’s are the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Mary Altar Guild, and various groups in our St. Mary Hispanic Ministries. If you would like your ministry to have a Corporate Communion, just call the parish office (x 111) and let the office know the date and which weekend Mass you’d like to have this. Let the office know how many pews you’d like to reserve. [You can plan on seating 5-6 people per pew.] Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Bob

Quarter Auction Saturday, October 19th

We’d like to have your help in putting on a “Quarter Auction” fundraiser for the St. Mary/Tileston Social Outreach. A “Quarter Auction” fundraiser is a type of auc-tion where people bid on items using quarters instead of larger sums of money. This enables people to win valuable items for as little as 25 cents, 50 cents, 75 cents or a dollar! The auction items will be offered based on their value in $10 increments. For example, an item valued at $20-25 will be auctioned for a 50 cent bid, a $10-15 item might be valued at just a quarter! Auction bidders pre-purchase tickets for $5.00 that they will turn in at the door for a numbered paddle to do their bidding! Paddles will be $7.00 at the door and additional paddles can be purchased to increase your chances of winning!

Here is how you can help!

Contact JoAnn Daley 762-5491, 110 – [email protected] or Simone Payne 762-5491, x113 - [email protected]

Let us know…..

• If you or any friends or family members are home-based vendors who might be interested in donating goods toward the auction for the opportunity to network with our attendees and set-up a table free of charge at the event. (i.e. Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Mary-Kay) We will offer these opportuni-ties on a first-come first-serve basis as we will only be able to have one representative from any business attend.

• If you or any friends or family members have service, retail or other types of businesses that may be willing to make a donation to the auction. Gift certif-icates, free passes for services or events are great items! Handmade crafts and gifts are welcome donations.

• If you will help by pre-selling tickets!

• If you would like to help the day of the event! We will need people to take tickets, issue paddles, make change and many other duties!

• The Catholic Daughters have agreed to sell refreshments and lunch items at the event. Please contact Julie Lachance @ 352-8822 if you are interest-ed in helping in that area the day of the auction.

Outgoing? Have an hour or two to offer, once every two months? The Newcomer Welcome Ministry is looking for outgoing, welcoming people for a VERY small commitment-- an hour or two after Mass one time every other month. We are going to start holding meet and greets with coffee and light breakfast items after the Sunday Masses, and we need friendly people to greet our newcomers. We already have several people helping with set-up, clean-up, and food/drinks, but if you are interested in that instead, please let us know, too. Contact Erin Buller at [email protected] or 833-7164.

All St. Mary children in grades 2 through 6 are invited to sing in the Children's Choir. The choir, directed by Sara Bryant, sings at the 9:30 Sunday mass about once a month during the school year, and sings at the 3:00 p.m. Christmas Eve mass. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 4:15 until 5:15, beginning in Octo-ber. If you are interested, please contact Sara Bryant, Director of Music, at 762-5491 ext. 118 or [email protected].

Sacrament of Confirmation For Youth To better adhere to updated norms St. Mary will be making a slight change in our youth Confirmation program. Under normal circumstanc-es, Confirmation candidates will now receive the Sacrament of Confir-mation as freshman in high school rather than as sophomores, which has been our custom in years past. The two year formation requirement will still be followed, but first year Confirmation will now be 8th grade rather than 9th grade. All youth who were registered with our eighth grade faith formation and Confirmation I classes last year (2012/2013), as well as last year’s eighth grade St. Mary school students, will go into our Confirmation II class and will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the spring of 2014. St. Mary’s is projecting to have 67 youth receive the Sacrament of Con-firmation this year. With such a large number we will be hosting our own Confirmation liturgy, to be celebrated by Bishop Burbidge, on Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – September 28 and September 29, 2013 6

With the scripture readings we have today I really do not need to say much. But I will! I suspect most of us are happy that the poor man finally experienced some good things. We probably don’t want to compare ourselves to the rich man, yet after ministering to 40 plus people each day here at the ministry this month, we are indeed rich. For the most part we have a roof over our heads, food to eat and sufficient funds to get us through most situations. And, above all, we have an education that not only helps us support ourselves, but it hopefully has broadened our minds and hearts to understand the reality of life. Then add to that the gift of our faith-faith that makes us grateful for the fact that we have been redeemed by God. Yes, we are truly rich and as our Holy Father has been modeling quite well, we are called to use our gifts to help our brothers and sisters in need. Last week I received a phone call from one of our elderly guests. Her need was simple - $3.00 to get a much needed prescription from the pharmacy. Sometimes I reflect on the fact that many of the people who come for assistance don’t have a few dollars on their person. That is a very sobering thought. Have I ever been that much in need? It definitely creates a dependence on another and that can be very humbling. Most of us have been raised to be able to take care of ourselves and our independence is so important to us. The Alleluia verse reminds us that Jesus emptied Himself for us and we are called to do the same. Alleluia!

Hadden Hall I and II are located on Caswell Street, which is adjacent to Empie Park. Parishioners volunteer to serve on the Board of Hadden Hall for a 3 year term and we will need several people to fill the vacancies of those leaving the Board this coming January. Year of the Faith 2012—2013

During the Year of Faith, the Diocese will provide parishes with weekly Faith Briefs. The Briefs will be taken from the Catechism and Vatican II docu-ments, the significance of which Pope Benedict XVI noted in his Year of Faith decree. This week’s offerings is from the DEI VERBUM:

The principal purpose to which the plan of the old covenant was directed was to prepare for the coming of Christ, the redeemer of all and of the messianic kingdom, to announce this coming by prophecy, and to indi-cate its meaning through various types. Now the books of the Old Testa-ment, in accordance with the state of mankind before the time of salva-tion established by Christ, reveal to all men the knowledge of God and of man and the ways in which God, just and merciful, deals with men.

Dei Verbum: IV. The Old Testament (¶15)

Special Need of the Week Thank you for supporting our Yard Sale. $2,956.00 will help us support our Work for Rent Program, paying something towards a rent or gasoline for those who work on our truck as we pick up and deliver much needed furniture and appliances.

We can always use dishes, flatware and pots and pans.

Apologetics 101: How to Defend the Faith

Wilmington Catholic Radio is proud to present a talk by the well-known apologist, John Martignoni, on Friday, October 25th, at 7 pm at St. Mark Catholic Church in the Parish Hall. John is the host of EWTN Live's Monday radio show, the Director of the Office of the New Evangelization and Stewardship for the Diocese of Birmingham (Alabama) , president and founder of Queen of Heaven Catholic Radio, and founder of the Bible Christian Society. You may remember John from the 2010 Ignited By Truth conference in which he did a talk on the "One Church." More likely you'll recognize him from his frequent appearances on Catholic Answers which airs on Wilmington Catholic Radio. The audience for this talk will be Catholic adults that want to learn how to confidently and lovingly defend their faith. While apologetics is nor-mally thought of as explaining our faith to non-Catholic Christians, the concepts will be equally valid to aid in explaining to the poorly cate-chized Catholic. One thing is sure: after listening to John's talk on apol-ogetics, you'll feel much better prepared to defend your faith. The talk is FREE and all are invited to attend, but we ask that you regis-ter for the talk via our website at www.WilmingtonCatholicRadio.com or by calling 377-1770 and leaving us your first name, last name, phone number and email address. Thank you!

Two Girls of San Antonio

Here we see two girls of the community of San Antonio who were at the Church of San Antonio for a special Mass in August of 2013. This community is a very hard-working one, and they are very proud of their new church, one of the 81 churches of our sister parish.

From the Principal Joyce M. Price

Thank you to all of the families who returned the E-rate forms which I have sent to the

diocesan office. We needed at least a 51% return...you made that 73%! Last year, we received an over $2,000 rebate. It's been another great week for our Lady Falcons Volley-ball Team. Congratulations to the girls for winning their games against Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday and Wilmington Christian Academy on Thursday of last week! The Fall Fest committee has met to plan a great evening of family fun on Friday, October 25th. For all of our new families, this is a tradition that we think you'll enjoy. We'll shut off Ann St., string lights, have lots of fun booths with games and activities for all. Our 8th grad-ers will follow tradition by creating a Haunted House under the gym. Save the date to come out, wear your costume, enjoy our cookout supper, and have lots of fun! On Friday, September 20th the Cub Scout leader came to speak to the boys in grades 1-5. Signup took place on Tuesday even-ing, September 24th. We had no school on Monday, September 23rd. The teach-ers, assistants, and I participated in a full day workshop on Literacy Across the Curriculum, Non-fiction Reading, and Common Core Standards. Please make any updates to your RenWeb information so that we can begin to create the Directory.

Science Olympiad 2013-2014 Who:

• All St. Mary Middle School students are invited to join the 2013-2014 Science Olympiad teams. We will have a Varsity team and two JV teams (in-school competitions in January & Febru-ary will determine team placement).

What: Science Olympiad is a team competition that takes place at the school, regional, state and national level. Team members work in pairs to accomplish tasks such as:

• Building cantilevers, cars, gliders, electric circuits and bottle rockets.

• Completing laboratory activities or taking tests in the areas of heredity, anatomy, epidemiology, entomology, and much more!

• A list of events and additional information may be found at: SMS Science

Olympiad Information or www.sciencenc.com. When/where:

• Practice will be on Thursdays & Fridays from 3:15-4:30 starting October 3rd.

• Students are not required to attend all practices-they can always work on their events at home.

• The Regional Competition will take place at UNCW on Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 7:30-5:00-all team members on all three teams will go to this competition.

• If the varsity team does well at the Regional Tournament, they will travel to the State Tournament at NC State University in April.

Coaching Needs:

• We need help from any parents, grandparents, family, and friends who are able to come. Simply visiting once a month can really help students pre-pare for their events. You are invited to join us to help monitor practice or to coach specific events.

Costs:

• Student costs begin with $15 membership dues that will be used toward competition fees and to purchase event supplies/equipment. Students who remain with the team and compete in the spring will also purchase a team t-shirt and lunch on competition day. Additional costs for travel and food may arise if we attend the State Competition, but those will be described at a later date.

Sign-up forms and event descriptions are available on my website: SMS Science Olympiad Information. Email any questions you may have to: Mrs. Brown—[email protected]

Ashley Basinger, H.S.A. President

I am very proud to see we have a great group of involved parents in our school! 140 out of 180 families filled out volunteer sheets! We now have fantas-tic lists of volunteers for many needed areas within the school. If you filled out a sheet, you have been placed in one or two areas of the school to volunteer. You were not placed in every area you checked - we don't want to wear out our volunteers. Mrs. Linn has a notebook with the different volunteer areas and volunteers. You will receive an e-mail from the head of your committee when the time is right. If you would like to volunteer for other groups, of course, we would love to have you help. Thank you for all of your time. It makes such a difference in our school!

Spotlight on Mrs. White’s Kindergarten Class

The kindergarten class is busy learn-ing and making friends. They are enjoying their classroom activities as well as their special classes. Last week they met their 4th grade bud-dies. Their buddies will met with them throughout the year to read and help with fun projects. The kindergarten

class is off to a fun start and is looking forward to a super school year!
