Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This Sunday, Catholic Christians celebrate the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct” (Matthew 16: 24-27). This Monday, September 4th, Americans celebrate Labor Day, the symbolic end of summer. The purpose of Labor Day is to honor workers and their work. For Catholic Christians, this day, though secular in nature, reminds us of the powerful social teachings of the Church about the sanctity of work and the nobility of workers. This day reminds us to be thankful for our work and for all who strive to make this a better world through their labor. And, of course, it reminds us to continually fight for decent wages and working conditions for all workers. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Reservations and initial deposits were due by July 1 and not all of the students’ families will be able to afford the trip even with the fundraising
subsidies. Therefore, we’re asking your help in sponsoring a student for the trip. Full sponsorship is $1000 but, all contributions are welcome and appreciated. Columbarium Work Begins
At long last, preliminary work has begun to prepare our campus for a columbarium and memorial garden. In this photo, we see a worker cutting down a cedar tree that was sitting at the southwest corner of the basilica. We hope the first phase of the project will be completed by Thanksgiving.

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16
Welcome to our St. Mary Families! We started last week with the amazing eclipse. The teachers and I were ready with our glasses
and even Moon Pies for a treat! The teacher in all of us had us think-ing of how to explain this phenomenon to our students. Many of our families traveled to other locations to view…Georgetown, Charleston, Columbia, and the mountains. It was such an exciting and positive way to bring our country together to share an experience and learn. It was a joy to see so many of you at our Orientation Evenings. Sum-mer break is wonderful, but the life of the building is so full when the students return. I just caught myself enjoying the sound of children’s laughter down the hallway. We’re back! I hope that the information provided so far has helped you to orient to your new locations whether new to our school or returning to new classrooms and teachers. I’ve received lots of positive feedback from students and teachers, so please let us know if we can help you in any way. We want your St. Mary experience to be as successful and enjoy-able as it can be. The After School Program started on Monday. If you are planning to use this service any time this year, don’t forget to register with Mrs. Linn. The program will be directed by Ms. Shay Burton, assisted by Laura Hernandez. Students who attend receive a snack, homework time, and play time. When I mentioned “What’s New” this year, I forgot to tell you that we are implementing a new Writing Program along with our schools in the diocese. Our language arts teachers, K-8, all received training dur-ing the Teacher Work Days. Thanks to all for following the directions for drop off and dismissal. We choose not to move the cones on Ann St. 3-3:15 for the safety of the children crossing there. I appreciate your understanding of that request. Parent/Student Handbooks – Please return your acknowledgement forms by Friday, Sept. 8th. If you haven’t already, please return all of your Emergency forms, etc. PLEASE LINK YOUR VIC CARD TO ST. MARY SCHOOL #1809!
St. Mary Athletic News Welcome back everyone!!!!
Here we are, about to start another school year filled with excitement and great expectations. At the beginning of each school year, I ask myself: What student athlete will unexpectedly take the leadership role of their team at crunch time, even knowing the outcome of the game is on the line? Who will display the character, sportsmanship, and leader-ship that best reflects the teachings of St. Mary? I’m looking forward to an outstanding hard-working year with you, the parents, and your children.
I was reminded by a parent that I did not mention our girls’ basketball program. I am sorry for the oversight. YES we do plan on having a basketball program for our girls in grades 6-8. Once we have enough girls to field a team, we will invite 5th grade girls to come out and learn the skills and techniques the team will be learning.
GIRLS’ TENNIS: Mrs. Moore and I are hoping to have a few more girls come out for our girls’ program. If your daughter is interested, please get in touch with Mrs. Moore or me and we will get her signed up.
VOLLEYBALL AND CROSS COUNTRY: The schedules are post-ed on the school athletic calendar as well as on my web page link. I hope you can come and watch a game or two. Most of all, I hope you can find some time to help me with our home contests in our Tileston gym. You can sign up for any of the needed positions, such as admis-sions table, concession stand, scoreboard, or lines person at Sign Up Genius. Please check your schedule and sign up to help. If you have any questions feel free to email me ([email protected]) or stop by the gym and ask. CHEERLEADING: We need a parent who would like to take over our cheerleading program. Some knowledge of the sport is needed. If you are interested, please contact me. ST. MARY GOLF CLASSIC: We are planning a meeting for the end of September to talk about the Golf Classic. I will explain what I need in the way of help. There will most likely be two meetings on the same day, one at 2:00 pm before pick-up, and one in the evening. I will hand out information on the work that needs to be done to make the event a great success. I am happy to do most of the work, but I need you to reach out to others to get donations and/or sponsorships. More infor-mation will be coming. Any questions, be in touch. As most of you know, the doors to the gym are always open. Please stop by so we can get to know each other, to say “Hi,” or to offer a helping hand. It is truly a team effort!
My goal every year is to make St. Mary better than the year be-fore and to make it special for all of our children.
Please help me do both!
