Today’s Message : “Do Good”

Today’s Key Text John 13:34-35; Ephesians 2:8-10

What does it mean for you to do good? Where do you begin? What are the boundaries? When we learn the reason behind Jesus’ words to love one another, we begin to understand the value of doing good. As we love, we also become “like Him” and therefore are Christ in the world. Simple Rule #2 “do good”.

Summer is a time when a lot of us are out of town, visiting family and friends, or just having fun.

However, there are many people who are unable to do these things due to illness,

and in some cases, needing blood themselves. It is there-fore, up to those of us who are available to set aside a lit-tle time to help these people.

Please visit the Bloodmobile July 31st in the Sanctuary parking lot from 8:30 am to 1 pm.

You will be blessed just knowing you helped someone in need. As usual ID is required.

How much water did you drink today? Normally you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. A survey by Rockefeller University discovered that about a third of those who responded drank the recommended amount and nearly 10% drank none at all. This is cause for concern because water is essential to your good health.

Your body is made up of 96% water and to keep all systems function-ing optimally, it is important to maintain that percentage. For exam-ple, drinking water prevents symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin, headaches and constipation. Severe dehydration can affect blood pressure, circulation, digestion, kidney function and even your joints.

In hot weather, you can lose fluids at a rate of a quart or more per hour so drinking water is important to replace what is lost through perspiration, urination, breathing, and other body processes. If you must be in the heat, drinking water will prevent cramping, nausea, and heat exhaustion. If you exercise, drink a glass of water about 20 minutes before the activity and at least a half a glass every 15-20 minutes during the activity. Since many fruits are 80-95% water, they are another source of fluid replacement.

Bottled water has its place if the local water tastes bad or if you are uncertain of its quality but it’s best to save your money and stick to natural water and a healthy diet.

Dehydration is often signaled first by hunger or fatigue rather than by thirst, so don’t wait to take your fill. In the same way, don’t forget to thirst after God. The verse above shows that our physical need is equal to our spiritual need. God satisfies our physical thirst with wa-ter and our spiritual thirst with his Word.

Patti and I had some good friends come visit with us this past weekend. Being that we just re-

cently moved into our new home we have been trying to make sure we had everything in place before their arrival. Patti is really big on hospi-tality and I have known her long enough to make sure that I pull my load when folks come by.

I was quickly dispatched to the grocery store for some last minute supplies. It seems there is al-ways something missing from the pantry or the refrigerator so making runs to the store is com-monplace at the Martin household. For me, the grocery store is not one of my favorite things to do so I have to make it a game in order to keep my mind on the task at hand. For men, we kind of “bag and tag” things and we are “in and out” of the store before anyone else knows about it. As I was negotiating the aisles I got a big smile on my face because I was actually beating my last time at the store. If I played my cards right I could do everything I was sent to do in less than 8 minutes. My basket was almost full and I was running a minute and a half ahead of schedule. Pretty impressive stuff, huh? Working my way into the front of the store I realized the hardest thing was still before me: which lane do I pick for check-out? I’m not one who normally is compla-cent on just standing still so I started looking around the front of the store to allow some non-productive time to slip away. That’s when I saw it happen.

A mother of two very young children had suc-cessfully negotiated the check-out line at the grocery store and was awkwardly pushing her cart (along with her two little children in tow) out of the store. I could see that she certainly

had her hands full. She was almost out the door when I saw a young man running to-wards her with a black bag clutched tightly in his hands. He sprinted in and out of the crowd of people shopping and finally reached her. He called out, “Ma’am! I think this is yours?!” Clutched tightly in his hand was her purse. I couldn’t help but think about how like my wallet, her purse must have contained things that were very important to her. At the sound of the young man’s voice she whirled around with a surprised look on her face. “What?” she said. “Oh my gosh! I didn’t even realize I had left it back there. Thank you for finding it and bringing it back to me. You don’t know what this means!” I could tell by the look on her face she meant every word. I could also see by the smile from the young man he realized he had done something good that day.

Our second spiritual law for Christians is “Do Good”. It is going to be so important for all of us to remember those words this coming week, especially when we see opportunities to do just that. But one thing about being a fol-lower of Jesus is we don’t have to think about whether or not to do something good. As a fol-lower, we just do it, per se. So, what will it take for you to do something good today? I bet if you allow yourself to be you, as a fol-lower of Jesus, you will have so many stories to share. Who knows, you just might see there are other followers of Jesus out there just like you.
