From the Pastor’s Desk…

In last Sunday’s Gospel, Peter was asked who he thought Jesus was. In other words, Peter was asked to identify Jesus – His person, His role, and His mission. Although he told Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” it turns out that Peter’s personal confession left out an important part of the identity of Jesus.

Peter had yet to learn that this Jesus was the Suffering Servant, not the triumphant, conquering Messiah who would throw off Roman oppression. In today’s Gospel, Peter strongly objects to Jesus’ prediction of his passion and death. He did not wish to see the life of his teacher and good friend end in failure and death. Jesus told Peter, as he tells us today: “Whoever would come after me must deny himself and take up his cross... and follow me.”

Peter and the other disciples had to learn the true meaning of Jesus’ life and ministry. They are only beginning to understand the full meaning of discipleship. It is demanding and uncompromising. The true identity of Jesus would require that He give His life completely and appear, in the eyes of many, to be a foolish failure. The disciples have been exposed to the true, full identity of Jesus. His life and that of His followers, would require sacrifice and suffering.

Jesus posed His disciples two overwhelming questions. What profit is there in gaining the whole world but losing one’s life? What can one possibly give in exchange for his life? These questions demand answers from us as well, because disciples of Christ – ourselves included – may be unprepared to offer an immediate answer. We need to place the cross and all that it means at the center of our lives. Therein we discover the true meaning of being a follower of Christ.

Have a good week,Fr. Bill Arnold

Many Thanks! Thank you to all who supported the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. I extend a heartfelt expression of thanks and gratitude. Both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit have exceeded their goals for this year’s campaign and will receive a refund, when all the pledges are paid in. These are different times – as you know – and our campaign this year was a bit out of the ordinary. May God bless your generosity to the 2020 BAA campaign.

Thank You From St. Vincent de Paul! The support from our parishioners for our food pantry requests has been heartwarming! Our food is well stocked, but we are in need of jumbo rolls of toilet paper. We have been trying to place one big roll in every bag for those who come to pantry. If you get a chance to pick up an extra package of toilet paper at the store, you can drop it off at the parish office from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., or bring it to Mass if you’re attending in person.

Additional Holy Spirit Information

Holy Spirit School welcomes back students starting on Monday, August 31, 2020! We are so excited and ready to see everyone! August 31st -September 4th is our Rolling Out Week. Small groups of students from

each grade come to school to get reacquainted with school and to learn all the new procedures to keep everyone safe. The week of September 8th, students will begin the blended learning model. Group A will come Mondays and Tuesdays and Group B will come Wednesdays and Thursdays. All students will learn virtually on Fridays. Some families have chosen an online only option for the first quarter.

Teachers and staff have been working very hard over the past couple of weeks to make sure the building is safe, ready, and welcoming for all students. We have hand washing stations, hand sanitizers, desk shields, and disinfectant spray. There are signs posted to help students and staff remember to keep a safe distance and wear a mask. Sidewalks have been installed in the front of the school to help with the arrival and dismissal of students. We are keeping the best interest of our students, teachers, and staff in mind with every decision and piece of the plan. Although this year is like no other, we will continue to teach our students and be leaders in faith for them. Thank you for your continuous support and prayers, we appreciate it!

Amy Chessler, Principal

Operation Backpack: Please help a child begin the school year with the supplies needed. Donated items will go to the children enrolled at Kae Avenue Elementary, though the Whitehall City Schools will be 100% remote learning for the first quarter. Disinfecting wipes, Kleenex, crayons, glue sticks, and dry erase

markers are the items that are most needed. There is a box in the back of church for the items you donate. Thank you!

Tuesday, September 1st – Day of Prayer for Creation. The Season of Creation begins on Tuesday, and ends on the Feast of St. Francis, October 4th. Pope Francis has asked all Catholics throughout the world to pray in a special way for the care of the environment. His encyclical (papal letter), published five years ago entitled “Laudato Si,” calls all humanity to pray and act for special care of the environment throughout the world. The Holy Father is especially concerned about the effects of global warming on the earth’s ability to sustain life for future generations. His concern extends especially to the poor, who through drought, flood, and rising ocean levels, will be the first and hardest hit by environmental change.

Parishioners of St. Philip and Holy Spirit! We have opened up both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit Church – to those who wish to attend Mass. Attendance is voluntary. The Bishops of Ohio have extended the dispensation to attend Mass until further notice. Anyone at high risk or who shows any symptoms of illness should remain at home.

Next Saturday, September 5, 4:00 p.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)

Shared Parish Information

Daily Mass Opportunities: Mass is celebrated on Wednesday and Friday mornings in Holy Spirit Church (not the Day Chapel) at 9:00 a.m. There is also a Mass celebrated every Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. There are seldom more than 10-12 people at a daily Mass. We keep social distance, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer. This is, for the summer, a good alternative to coming to a slightly more crowded weekend Mass, if that is a concern to you.

Open Wide Our HeartsU.S. Bishops’ Pastoral on Racism

St. Paul teaches us that all people are united together through the love and life of Jesus Christ. He uses the image of the body to express how people can be united even if they are different from one another.

St. Paul calls us to celebrate the differences between the different members of the Body of Christ. Just as a body needs an ear, an arm, and every other part to be whole, the Church, as the Body of Christ, needs every one of its diverse members to be whole. We must ensure the well-being of each of its parts.

Racism manifests itself in our thoughts, attitudes, actions, and inactions, as well as in social structures and unjust systems that perpetuate centuries of racial injustice. We are called to share the suffering of our sisters and brothers in Christ who have been wounded by the evil of racism. We must examine our participation in racism through our thoughts, attitudes, actions and inactions:

1. Have I fully loved God and fully loved my neighbor as myself?

2. Have I caused pain to others by my actions or my words that offended my brother or sister?

3. Have I done enough to inform myself about the evil of racism?

4. Is there a root of racism within me that blurs my vision of who my neighbor is?

5. Have I ever witnessed an occasion when someone experienced

racism and I did or said nothing?

6. Have I ever been in a situation when someone experienced racism – and I helped to cause their pain and embarrassment?

7. Have I ever supported or aided a person who experienced racism and paid a price for it? How did I react?

8. How am I called to respond to the evil of racism?

From U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Open Wide Our Hearts” Pastoral Letter Against Racism.

Are you or is someone you know: Curious about the Catholic faith? Interested in becoming Catholic? Baptized Catholic as a child, but never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(RCIA) is the process through which adults join the Catholic Church. The first step in this process is a period of inquiry, which is an opportunity to learn more about our parish community, our Catholic faith, and our God. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our RCIA sessions will take place online using the Zoom teleconferencing system. Our first RCIA session will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th. All are welcome to participate! This is also a great opportunity for lifelong Catholics to brush up on their faith. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact [email protected] for login information.

Confessions at Holy Spirit: Every Thursday evening, confessions are held at Holy Spirit Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Either Fr. Bill Arnold or Fr. Mike Nimocks will be hearing these Confessions. Keep a few points in mind.• Call to make an appointment. Give only your first name

and a possible contact number.

• All Confessions are in the Church. Only one person admitted to Church at a time.

• All Confessions are anonymous and done at a six-foot distance. Your anonymity is always protected. Fr. Arnold/Nimocks have no need or desire to know your identity. Priest sits behind a screen.

• All entry to Church through the bell tower door or elevator door.
