Our Mother of Consolation

Dear People of Saint Joseph Parish,

The month of May is dedicated to Mary, our Blessed Mother. This year, I encourage you to honor Mary and pray to her using her title, Our Mother of Consolation. In the Bible, consolation describes the action of God coming to the aid of people who have experienced loss, disappointment, hard and difficult times. These words describe what the people in our parish, and even Monsignor McLoone, are experiencing. Consolation implies the lessening of grief by calming, cheering and inspiring hope.

Jesus is the consolation of God made flesh. In Jesus, we see and experience God consoling and helping people. Jesus is sent by God to help in hard/difficult times. Note the action of Jesus which comforts, soothes, eases and calms.

Recall the stories where God/Jesus comes to the aid of people who have experienced loss, disappointment, oppression: Deliverance from slavery in Egypt; Provision of food, water, protection in

the desert while on way to Promised Land; Jesus healing people (Loss of health); Jesus with Zacchaeus (Zacchaeus’ loss of honesty and respect among peers); Woman caught in adultery (lost virtue); Jesus feeding crowd; Jesus calming storm (fears) at sea (lost faith that Jesus would provide); Cure of the Blind Man (lost vision); Parable of Good Samaritan (Consolation after being robbed, beaten along life’s way).

Devotion to Mary under the title of Our Mother of Consolation, dates back to the 2nd Century. Mary is venerated as “mother of consolation” or consoler of the afflicted. Through Mary, God sent Jesus to be the consolation of his people. Consoled by God so often throughout her life, (unplanned pregnancy, giving birth to baby in a manger, homeless and living as a refugee in Egypt, widowed, standing beneath the cross, holding the lifeless body of Jesus) Mary, in turn, is able to console all her children entrusted to her by Jesus. As our mother, Mary is a source of the Lord’s consolation for all in distress.

A statue of Our Mother of Consolation has been placed in the narthex. The statue of Our Mother of Consolation pictures Mary holding her infant son, Jesus. The colors and expression in the statue reflect the comfort, peace, calm, relief that God’s consolation gave Mary.

Note the crown on Mary. The crown is a symbol of victory. God’s consolation has enabled Mary to be victorious over the forces of

1. fear (Annunciation: do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God. God consoles Mary through the angel’s message that she has found favor with God . . . .)

2. loss (death of St. Joseph; Mary is widowed) (death of Jesus; Mary buries her son) 3. disappointment in her life.

Mary’s first hand experiences of loss and difficult times called her to humbly acknowledge her need for God’s grace of consolation. God graced her soul. We see the calm, peace, hope, in her that God’s consolation made possible. This statue of Our Lady of Consolation portrays Mary victorious, radiating peace, hope. As a mother holds her child close, so Mary, as our Mother, holds us and our concerns close. Mary prays that we will be open, like her, to allow God’s consolation to grace our lives. Mary prays that the spirit of calm, faith, and love that hovered over her life amidst life’s losses, disappointments, and oppresses will also be ours.

May God console us all!

Congratulations Congratulations Congratulations Congratulations

The Priests, Sisters, Parish Staff and parish community rejoices with the Giardini family as they celebrate the Ordination to Diaconate of their son and brother,

Reverend Mr. Reverend Mr. Reverend Mr. Reverend Mr. Alessandro GiardiniAlessandro GiardiniAlessandro GiardiniAlessandro Giardini

on May 12, 2018 at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Saint Joseph Parish will be blessed to have Deacon Alessandro preach at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass and congratulate him afterwards in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to celebrate and seek the new Deacon’s blessing.

The Sacrament of Holy Orders is comprised of three “degrees” or levels. They are Deacon, Priest, and Bishop.

The Catechism in #1570 states that Deacons “share in Christ’s Mission and grace in a unique way. The sacrament…configures them to Christ, Who made Himself

the ‘deacon’ or servant of all.”

Alessandro has studied at Saint Charles for 8 years, and needs only complete one more year of study in preparation for his Ordination to Priesthood, pray God, next May 2019 at the Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter and Paul.

We continue to pray for him, his family, and more young men to answer the call to the Priesthood from the many families that make up our beautiful parish community!

Knights of Columbus

Change for Life The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring our annual parish “Change for Life” program. This weekend, May 12/13 after each Mass the Knights will be handing out empty baby bottles. Money collected will go towards parish buses going to the 2019 "March for Life" in Washington DC next January.

Heavenly Father,

Your Son ascended in great triumph to sit at your right hand. You sent your Spirit to watch over us, guide us and teach us to be better stewards of your abundant gifts. May this Spirit of wisdom make us better stewards of our planet. May your Spirit increase our awareness of the dignity of every human life, and show us the way to be better stewards of our neighbor. And through your Spirit, may we be inspired every day to live in accordance with the Gospel, and to give witness to our risen Lord. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
