March 18, 2018 - Fifth Sunday of Lent Brothers and Sisters,
We can only imagine what the Greeks in this Sunday’s Gospel were hoping to see and hear, as they asked to see Jesus.
What they did hear was both bad and good news. Christ foreshadows His passion and death, as foretold in Jeremiah and Hebrews, but the good news is that there is a purpose — much fruit will be produced and believers will be drawn unto Himself.
And what of the second message? “Whoever loves his life loses it. Whoever hates his life will preserve it. Whoever serves me must follow me.” Saint Augustine suggests that it is “man’s love for his own life that leads to its destruction.” And he proposes a remedy: “seek not your own things, but the things that are of Christ … to walk even as He has walked … doing not only those acts of mercy that pertain to the body, but every good work, for the sake of Christ … even to that work of special love, … to lay down one’s life for one’s friends, for that [is] to lay it down also for Christ.” (Tractate 51) Saint Augustine contends that those who have come, seen and heard Jesus are no longer “permitted merely to admire, but [are] commanded to imitate.” And he offers: “let the man who would follow learn by the road he must travel. … Set the will of God before your own, for He has taught you what to think of, what to say, on whom to call, in whom to hope and whose will, as sure and divine, to prefer to your own” through the road that leads to our Redeemer, Christ Jesus. As Holy Week approaches, let us pray for the courage to choose the road and embrace our journey.
This Sunday begins our annual Forty Hours Devotion, initiated in our region by the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, Saint John Neumann. This Sunday evening there will be a Praise and Worship Holy Hour in our Church at 7:00 pm. On Monday, there will be Evening Prayer at 7:00 pm, and lastly Tuesday there will be the Solemn Celebration of Mass which will close our devotion.
Anyone is welcome to pray before the Lord during these days. Our school children, PREP children and Altar servers will be found before the Lord. I pray that their witness can lead us to do likewise, to find even a few moments to stop, pray and plead before our good God for all that worries us or leads us to Him. You are invited during the daytime or evening hours to come and venerate the Lord present in the Holy Eucharist. He will be present in the church proper, so our Perpetual Adoration Chapel will be closed until Tuesday evening following Mass and the closing Procession.
May our good God bless you and your loved ones abundantly as we pray as one family for our loved ones and personal requests. May holy Joseph bring the true desires of our hearts to his beloved son, Jesus.
A blessed Solemnity of Saint Joseph to you and to every person whose faith has been nurtured in this beautiful community!

Palm Sunday, March 25 On Sunday, March 25, the Church will celebrate Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish the Paschal Mystery of his death and Resurrection. The memorial of this event is included in every Mass.
At the 10:30 a.m. Mass, we will observe the Solemn
Procession, in which we will gather in the narthex and
outside the front of the church before Mass begins.
After hearing a Gospel account of the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem and witnessing the blessing of the palms, the congregation will process into the church and fill the pews.
For all other Masses, we will observe the Solemn Entrance: The congregation will gather in the pews as is customary and the celebrants of the Mass will conduct the blessing and reading toward the back of the church, then approach the sanctuary.

In March, Irish or not, our thoughts tend to turn to the wearin’ of the green. “Green,” naturally, has taken on a new meaning. The challenge lies in making sure this environmental movement is more than a trend. In our society, we’re making strides with recycling, water conservation, reduction of packaging, high-efficiency appliances, reusable shopping bags and the like. But we can’t relax our efforts. Stewardship of our environment can dovetail with our Lenten practices.
Prayer – Pray for leadership. Pray for scientists working on solutions. Pray that each person understands that his or her actions impact all of creation.
Fasting – Remember that abstaining from meat from time to time benefits the environment. Eating lower on the food chain translates to using fewer resources.
Almsgiving – Contribute to an organization working toward conservation, environmentalism or other branches of the green movement.
