The Seven Dhatus and the Ten Pranas A weekend workshop with Kofi Busia Saturday November 19th and Sunday November 20th Time: 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm each day Yoga Within 8035 Soquel Drive, Suite #27 Aptos CA 95003 (831- 818-2903) The Dhatus rasa (nourishing) rakta (enlivening) mamsa (empowering) medas (permeating) asthi (supporting) majja (invisioning) shukra/artava (recreating) The Pranas prana (coming in) vyana (moving away) udana (pushing up) apana (pushing out) samana (integrating) kurma (waxing/waning) krkara (hunger/thirst) devadatta (revitalizing) naga (raising consciousness) dhananjaya (eternal companion) Vata, pitta and kapha—the three doshas—are reasonably well known as the ways in which Ayurveda and yoga affect us through the three gunas of sattva, rajas and tamas. The dhatus or “tissues” through which those principles em- body themselves are less well known. The Tattra Vaisheradi (I:30) says that the dhatus are the “congealment” of the essence of being. Prana is in its turn the acknowledged master-deliverer of life. It envelopes body–mind–spirit and is responsible for carrying impressions of the outside world, along with water, food and breath to the manifold parts. Tejas, the fire-like energy canal which governs courage and willpower; and ojas, the canal that carries and maintains the body’s innate strength and energy reserves together oversee this process. We will learn, over the weekend, the fuller implications and meanings of these diverse structures, what their forces are, and how to strengthen and sup- port their striving for physical, psychological and spiritual healing and rejuvenation both in daily life and through asana practice.
