The Chief’s
Corner
Hello Everyone! August is here and that means it’s time for our club’s yearly auction. The club auction, yearly membership dues and the 50/50 raffles that we hold throughout the year are the only sources of income for our club. Holding a club auction gives our membership a chance to clear their garages of unwanted items. It also gives other members a chance to pick up something they may need at a bargain price in addition to raising money for our club treasury. The club auction is a win for everyone. To participate, just bring your items to the August meeting. Items brought to the auction do not have to be Model “A” related. Some items sold in the past were bird houses, weed trimmers and gift certificates for cakes. This year’s club auction will be held on the second Wednesday of August beginning at 7:00. We will hold a brief business meeting and then move directly into the auction. The meeting and auction will take place downtown at the Columbus Fire Museum located at 260 North Fourth Street. There will not be a meeting on the first Wednesday in August due to the MARC National Meet being held up in Dearborn, Michigan during that week. In addition to the club auction this month, the club will also be heading down to Commercial Point to check out the Commercial Point Karting Classic. This is an annual event that has been held for over 50 years. Professional go-kart drivers race throughout the village streets reaching speeds over 80 mph. They have a special parking and viewing area reserved in the center of town just for us. We even get to take our cars on a parade lap around the track. Wrapping up the month will be a tour up to Wapakoneta, Ohio to check out the Armstrong Air & Space Museum. This will probably be our longest tour of the year, but definitely worth the trip. It may be the dog days of summer where everything starts to move a little slower, but as you can see, we are still going strong. See you on the road!

LOCATION: 260 North 4th Street
Columbus, Ohio
TOPIC: “Club Auction”
ADDITIONAL INFO:

do not have to be Model “A” related.

appreciated! All money raised goes
directly into our club’s treasury.
On Saturday, August 3rd, the club will be
heading down to Commercial Point for the
annual Karting Classic tour. This is not
really a tour, just a short trip down to
Commercial Point to see some racing
action. Instead of traveling there together
like we have done in the past, this year we
will just meet at Commercial Point around
12:30 pm in the center of town. There will
be a reserved parking and viewing area for
us. Our club has been invited to do a
parade lap around the track at
approximately 1:30 pm. The afternoon heat
races will begin at 2:00 pm.
approximately 1:30 pm. The afternoon heat races will begin at 2:00 pm. Be sure to bring a
chair to enjoy the event. Food and beverages will be available within walking distance of our
viewing area. Since this is a street race, many of the village streets are closed. The best way
to get to the center of town is to take State Route 104 south to State Route 762. Turn right
(west) on 762 and follow the signs. The Karting Classic is the oldest street go-kart race in the
country. Professional drivers from throughout the mid-west will compete on the village streets
at speeds of over 80 mph. There will be a free concert after the races in the center of town
beginning at 6:30 pm. This year’s concert will feature Hard Day’s Night, a Beatles tribute band
that is sure to put on a great show.

H. Allan Goldhardt received a call from the club president in northwest Ohio, asking if there would be any interest in our Club joining other Ohio Model A Clubs for a weekend get together in 2020, at a location in Ohio. More discussion to ensue at future meetings.
I. In terms of the Sunshine Report, the Club sent flowers to Chip and Sharon Stout in memory and honor of their son Henry.
J. Changes are coming to the Club website. It will be easier to click on the website and updated photos will be posted.
The Tech Topic for the evening, presented by Daric Galden, was “How to Properly Perform a Valve Job”. Daric gave us a thorough explanation and demonstration of performing a valve job on your Model A. Daric stated that if anyone finds that their A needs a valve job, he is available to work on your engine and get you back on the road.
Daric also won the 50/50 Drawing!

The 2019 Scioto Model “A” Ford Club Points
Race is underway. All club members are
automatically entered into the race. You earn
points by attending meetings and tours.
Additional points can be earned by driving your
Model “A” to our meetings, leading a tour,
hosting a meeting, doing a presentation at a
meeting, providing refreshments at an event or
signing up a new member. If you make it to the
end of the race by collecting 16 Points, you will
receive a FREE Membership next year.
Although we are past the halfway point of the
race, there is still plenty of time to earn some
points. So get out there and start accumulating
those points!
Silent Movie Nights
The Silent Movie Nights were held last
month on July 18th and 19th. Unfortunately,
the weather didn’t cooperate with us. As all
of you know, it has been extremely hot.
There were also some heavy rains and
thunderstorms in certain parts of the city on
Thursday night. I would like to thank the
folks that went out in the heat and dodged
the rain drops to represent our club at this
wonderful event.
July Tech Meet
Last month, Daric Galden hosted
the July Tech Meet at his Henry
Street Garage and Machine Shop
in Ostrander, Ohio. Not only did
Daric let us meet at his shop, he
supplied plenty of good food,
refreshments and also did a
seminar on how to do a valve job
on a Model “A”. This was a great
seminar and very informative for
the membership. We had 35
people and 4 Model “A”s at the
meeting. Thanks Daric!
Roscoe Village Canal Boat Ride Tour Last month, on the 20th of July, our club took a tour over to Roscoe Village located in
Coshocton, Ohio. Once again, the weather was extremely hot with temperatures in the 90’s
and a heat index well over 100 degrees. We had a total of 10 people on the tour with 3 brave
souls driving their Model “A”s. Upon arriving in Roscoe Village, we had lunch at the
Warehouse Restaurant. After lunch, we headed over to the boat landing and boarded the canal
boat “Monticello III”. We took a peaceful horse-drawn canal boat ride on a remaining portion
of the Ohio and Erie Canal. While enjoying the ride, we learned about how the canal system
was built and how it changed the lives of the early pioneers in Ohio forever. And of course,
while heading back home, we had to make a stop for some ice cream.
Port Columbus 90th Anniversary Celebration Our club was invited to
participate in the 90th
Anniversary Celebration of Port
Columbus. The event was held
last month on July 13th. We had
six Model “A”s present
throughout the day to represent
our club. For the celebration,
the public was invited to tour the
original Port Columbus terminal.
The art deco style structure was
dedicated on July 8, 1929, built
on a site personally selected by
Charles Lindbergh, and served
as Columbus’ main airport
terminal until 1958. The terminal
was the eastern-most air “port”
for Transcontinental Air
Transport (TAT), often referred
to as “The Lindbergh Line,”
which offered passengers a
time-saving combination of
travel by rail and plane from New
York to Glendale, California,
taking just 48 hours. The
terminal is listed on the register
of historic landmarks. Thanks to
the efforts of Preserve Original
Columbus Airport Terminal
(POCAT), a volunteer group
organized to save the aging
terminal and tower, in 2016
funds were raised to remove
mold, remove interior debris,
and install a new roof. The non-
profit Ohio Air & Space Hall of
Fame and Museum (OASHOF)
intends to renovate the terminal
and property as its permanent
home. A big “Thank You” goes
out to our members that
represented the Scioto Model
“A” Ford Club and participated
in this unique event!

“A” Word on Fashion
Men’s Fashions Edward the VIII was a major figure during these
times for unusual male fashion. He is seen in short,
baggy knee pants known as “Plus Fours” along with a
round-necked schoolboy sweater.
Underneath he was wearing a white butterfly-collared
shirt with a black tie. On his head he was wearing a
“grandpa" style hat.
Both men and boys wore full three-pieced suits
during this time when attending formal occasions such
as weddings. Similar to present day, these were made
with broader shoulders and a more masculine-looking
pattern than in earlier years.
The alternative was usually something along the line
of a sweater vest and knickers or trousers. These were
also popular in the 1920s as well. thepeoplehistory.com
This month’s “Flapper of the Month” features Greta Garbo. This photo is from
the 1926 silent film “Flesh and the Devil”. Born Greta Lovisa Gustafson in 1905,
Garbo grew up in a Stockholm slum and happened into acting after a film
director discovered her in a local department store. By 1930, the "Swedish
sphinx" had become an icon of the silver screen. In 1941, at the age of 36,
Garbo announced a "temporary" retirement; it would last 49 years, until her
death in 1990 in Manhattan, where she lived by herself — she never married
and bore no children.
