These last year has been a busy time for the shelter as we continue to improve our animal care standards for all our wonderful pets. Because of the generosity of our community donors, we have been able to add additional cat and dog kennels and create an additional isolation room. And all of this with a 98% save rate over the last year! In this newsletter you will read about some of our past events, upcoming events and different ways you can become an active family member of the shelter.

I sincerely hope you can find it in your hearts to help us continue to improve our shelter and save even more lives. There are so many ways you can become a member of the WCAHS family - becoming a member, volunteering, donating, helping with fundraising events, cuddling a kitten, mowing the yard, or walking a dog! Everything - from the smallest donation to time spent with the animals - makes a big, big difference. So, become part of the family. Contact us today to see how you can help.

Purple Cat is a mobile veterinary surgical suite providing ow-cost, high-quality cat spays and cat neuters to cats inneed in Northwest Wisconsin. Many of their clients are big hearted folks with a cat population out of control from years of reproducing. These cats may be living on dairy farms, hiding in the alley or in an abandoned shelter at the trailer court. Dr. Angie Ruppel of Northern Lakes Vet Clinic operates the mobile surgery unit that works very closely with area humane societies and animal shelters in educating the public about the heartbreaking results of not spaying and neutering our cats. The supply of adoptable cats in our shelters greatly outweigh the number of people looking to adopt. Please help us get the word out to spay and neuter all cats. Purple Cat was at WCAHS on several occasions this summer and we hope to have them back again as Dr. Ruppel’s schedule allows. For more information about Purple Cat, visit their website at wwwpurplecatvet.com, and check our website and facebook page for upcoming clinics at WCAHS.

If you live in Washburn County, here is what you can do if you find a stray dog and have been unable to determine who the dog belongs to.

If the dog has a Washburn County dog license tag, the Washburn County Sheriff'’s Department can look up the owner. Get the number and give them a call. The dog might live close by.

If there are no tags, law enforcement can guide you on what to do next, whether that is having them pick the dog up or having you drop the dog off at the shelter. You can call our shelter to see if someone has reported a lost dog to us. You can also message us on our Facebook page with a photo and location and we will post: fb.com/WashburnCountyAreaHumaneSociety.

The Washburn County Area Humane Society has a "Snap" program, available to those who need assistance with the cost of spaying or neurtering their pet. We will be using our "Thomas Fund" established by one of our members in memory of her beloved cat, Thomas, plus money that donors have designated for our SNAP fund. The "Snap" Program allows you to use the veterinarian of your choice. For more information or to request an application, please call the shelter at (715) 635-4720.

We are currently able to offer a $50 discount towards each surgery to those who qualify, while the funds last.

We can't emphasize enough the importance of spaying or neutering your pet. The procedure is safe and helps reduce the number of unwanted kittens and puppies that are born and ultimately come to our shelter each year. An animal that has been spayed or neutered often has a healthier and longer life. We encourage you to take advantage of this program, call the shelter, and get your pet scheduled.

Spaying and neutering makes a big difference: Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens!

Is volunteering at WCAHS right for you? We hope so!

Here are 4 great reasons to volunteer at WCAHS:

1. Warm Fuzzy Feelings - One of the best feelings you can experience is comforting a lonely animal who has been neglected or has had a hard life. By volunteering with animals at the shelter, you can be that one shining face or ray of light promising them a better tomorrow.

2. Unique Life Experiences - The animal shelter is a great place to explore new activities or find a new career interest. There are many different areas you can help - from volunteering at local adoption events, to helping with pet care. Many employers and college admissions offices view time spent in a volunteer service not only a positive attribute, but sometimes as a requirement.

3. New Friends - In addition to the many adorable, fuzzy friends that you will make among the animals at the shelter, you also get the chance to meet new human friends when you volunteer with animals!

4. A Smile - Every time you bring some joy into a homeless animal's heart, they will give back with a wagging tail, a soft purr or a grateful nudge. This will put a smile on your face that is sure to last long after you leave the shelter.

Make a Difference. Somebody here needs you.

The Washburn County Area Humane Society is always in need of volunteers to help with the following: Dog Walking Cat Socialization Front Desk Off-site Adoption Events Special Fundraising Events Gardening - Grounds Maintenance Cleaning Kennels

Every task is important and we sincerely appreciate every volunteer hour.

For more information or to enroll in one of our volunteer training sessions, please contact Abby Johnson at [email protected] or call 715-635-0763.

The Washburn County Area Humane Society's 2019 Music Festival Fundraiser “Fur-Ever Fest” was held Saturday, June 29, at The Potter's Shed in Shell Lake. It was a “peticularly” hot day but cool music was provided by Chillin With The Cat, Chad Kostner, Jason Chaffee, Bare Bones, and the Smith Family. Also cool was the beer and rootbeer provided by Round Man Brewery, other beverages provided by Pepsi, and the best in town hotdogs thanks to Economart, then add rootbeer floats and popcorn along with the day-long raffle with all the great prizes and Fur-Ever Fest was a day to enjoy.

Thanks go again to Jack and Judy White who originally created this music fest fundraiser idea and coordinated it with Rebecca and Mike Macone, owners of the Potter's Shed. Thanks also to the Fur-Ever Fest attendees, WCAHS volunteers and employees, and individuals who donated prizes/food/beverages. As always, the news media are so helpful in getting the word about WCAHS events out to the many readers and listeners. It could not have been done without each aspect of this fundraising effort of so many kind people working together.

THIRD ANNUAL MUSIC FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER “FUR-EVER FEST”

"PINS FOR PETS" BOWLING FUNDRAISER

Nearly $2500 was donated by the 90 bowlers who participated and those who stopped in to support the Washburn County Area Humane Society's “Pins for Pets” Fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, at the Northwoods Lanes and Lounge in Spooner. Familiar and new bowlers, families, friends, old and young enjoyed this annual 9-Pin Tap Bowling Fundraiser. Many raffle tickets were bought, generous donations were received, good snacks were served, and good fun was enjoyed. Community members and businesses donated prizes as did WCAHS employees and volunteers who also provided food and help throughout the day.
