Is the Sandwich Jewish?

The first known sandwich was made by Hillel the Elder, a famous rabbi of 1st century BCE

Hillel the Elder began the Passover tradition of placing a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between 2 pieces of matzo to eat with bitter herbs

The mixture represented the suffering of Jews at the hands of the Egyptian pharaoh

Mmmm, Stale Bread

When people in the Middle Ages couldn’t afford plates, they put meats and other foods on top of coarse, stale bread known as “trenchers”

This isn’t exactly a sandwich as people would eat the meat first with their fingers and then eat the juice-soaked trencher or toss it to dogs or beggars

When Was It First Called a Sandwich?

In 1762, the first-ever record of the word “sandwich” to refer to meat between bread was written by Edward Gibbon, an English author and historian

Surprised by the appearance of some of the wealthiest Englishman seated in a noisy coffee room, he said:

“I dined at the Cocoa Tree…That respectable body affords every evening a sight truly English. Twenty or thirty of the first men in the kingdom…supping at little tables…upon a bit of cold meat, or a Sandwich.”

John Montagu was the Fourth Earl of Sandwich and funded Captain James Cook, an explorer of New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, and Hawaii

Captain Cook named what we now know as the Hawaiian Islands the “Sandwich Islands,” after Montagu

Too Lazy to Get Up?

Montagu gambled for hours at London’s Beef Steak Club in the mid-18th century, and sometimes refused to get up to eat

According to the story, Montagu ordered his servant to bring him meat between two pieces of bread

As he was the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, others at this exclusive club would order, “the same as Sandwich!”

His order: a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread

The Sandwich Comes to America

In 1840, Englishwoman Elizabeth Leslie first published a recipe for a sandwich in her American cookbook, Directions for Cookery:

“Ham Sandwiches - Cut some thin slices of bread very neatly, having slightly buttered them; and, if you choose, spread on a very little mustard. Have ready some very thin slices of cold boiled ham, and lay one between two slices of bread. You may either roll them up, or lay them flat on the plates. They are used at supper or at luncheon.”
