A recap of our August 11 meeting:
No guests, but a warm welcome to Ken Nelson, who received his Past President badge for only$20. Such a deal.
Ken presented year-end District Awards thatwere presented for the 2008-09 year. Our clubcan be proud of all we do.
Must be summer – lots of absent members.Hope they’re having fun and are coming backsoon.
Sunshine report – Frank tries to call memberswho haven’t shown in a while. Is there anyoneelse willing to help make calls? Please let himknow.
Birthdays – Ken celebrated his birthday earlier inthe month, and graciously allowed members ofthe table to pay for the privilege of sitting withhim.
Exemption badge talks are always entertaining,we never know what our members will say…Jon shared his story about serendipitous deci-sions that brought him here; anyone who wantspointers on rekindling chemistry, talk to him. Can’t wait to hear next week’s installment fromone of our newest members.
Announcements included Frank attempting torecruit members to attend the membership semi-nar with him this Saturday. Bill still needs toknow who will attend the District Governor din-ner on Aug 25 at Trattoria Ulivetto.
FUN-RAISER –Don’t forget to tell Camille whatyou will donate. Fred Pratt needs Live Auctionitems. Steve and Cindy are soliciting sponsors. Please remember that this is our major fund-raiser, and all members are expected to partici-pate. Anyone wanting to come to the next plan-ning meeting, talk to Bob Frias. This is the bro-ken record part of the report…
Another GREAT presentation by historian Hanswho shared an old Master Gear newsletter.Reminiscing about former members and tradi-tions is becoming an enjoyable part of ourlunches. Got a kick out of seeing Hank Datter’sphoto - he STILL has all his hair, just a littlewhiter. And who knew Hans was such a wiz atphoto retouching… huh, John?
Bill Libbon was the recipient of a 1967 MasterGear newsletter that talked about the very firstED of the Boy’s Club of SM. Thanks from us allto Bill for continuing to provide such a valuablecommunity resource. Tom and Yvonne traveledin opposite directions for some fun, and a fewfines. Keep going on those trips, our pig needsto be fed. Fred Pratt explained how he becamesurrogate “Mommy” last week. The things we dofor those grandchildren! I fined Carlie $25 forsomething, can’t remember what, but everytimehe opens his mouth, he’s bound to say some-thing fineable. Our treasurer thanks you, Carlie.
Our program was Roy Dugger explaining againhow useful our website can be if we only chooseto log on. I’m guilty, I don’t use it as much as Ishould, but he and Frank are doing a great jobgetting it current and full of information. Thanksto Frank for sending reminder emails with thelinks included; they’re a good timesaver.
The trivia question was way too easy, lots ofmembers knew the first email was sent 48 yearsago.
50/50 Drawing: Fred Pratt had the winning ticket, but not the right marble. BUT, he was the proudrecipient of Rotary–colored Disney PrincessEGGS, laid by Heather’s hen and lovingly deco-rated by her daughter Lilly. What a perfect wayto end a meeting.••••••••••••••••Still looking for someone to take notes and sub-mit them to Frank. Volunteers can commit toonly a couple of months. Call me! Susan

August is Membership and Extension Month
In August, Rotarians are asked to focus on membership and extension. During this month, consider sharing what itmeans to be a Rotarian in your community. For starters, check out the new online version of “Rotary Basics”, and usesome of the content to develop a press release, letter to the editor, or newspaper supplement. Be sure to add informa-tion specific to your club and district. http://www.rotary.org/en/Members/NewMembers/RotaryBasics/Pages/ridefault.aspx
It's not too early to plan to attend the District 5240 Conferencein October! For those of you who might not know, our Districtholds two kinds of events every year: the District Assemblies inApril are training seminars, whereas the District Conferences inOctober are a time for fellowship, inspiration, socializing andFUN. I'm planning to go and hope lots of our members andspouses will be able to come too.
This year, there are lots of really cool activities and entertain-ment planned, it's being held at the beach at the VenturaMariott. How can you say no to playing Texas Hold'em or build-ing sand castles on the beach all for the Rotary cause???
(Carlie can actually be telling the truth about doing good forRotary if he goes.) The speakers and entertainment are excel-lent. There are limited spaces available, so submit your reserva-tions soon. See the attached fliers.
Sincerely,
Susan
The “Registration Form” is on our web Site. Left Column under Downloads.
The Rotary Club of Santa Maria
The First Object of Rotary
By DGN Wade Nomura (Carpinteria Morning)
In 1910 Rotary adopted the “Object ofRotary”. The First Object is “THE DE-VELOPMENT OF ACQUAINTANCE ASAN OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICE.”Unless you are a scholar, of all things Ro-tary, you probably never really thoughtabout what this was intended to convey. To make it easier for Rotarians to relateto, Rotary later simplified the Objects ofRotary by creating the Four Avenues ofService, with each Avenue relating to oneof the Four Objects of Rotary. The FirstObject of Rotary became CLUB SER-VICE. Why do you think Club Service isalso the First Object of Rotary? Is possiblethat it was considered the most importantof the Avenues of Service?
Consider the following:
• Without the Club, Rotary would not exist.
• An individual cannot join Rotary Interna-tional without joining a club first.
• No other Avenue of Service would existwithout Club Service.
When I was a club president, I focused75% of my efforts on Club Service. I foundthat a successful club is a happy and ac-tive club. If your members are having funand enjoying the personal satisfaction ofservice, the only outcome will be success. It becomes a win-win” proposition. Mem-bers are happy (and sharing their enthusi-asm with others), projects are successful, and events are nothing but fun. Now eve-rybody wants to join because of the fun,the satisfaction of giving and because ofthe reputation your club has developed bydoing successful projects. This is all possi-ble with a good Club Service plan in place.Club Service should always focus on theindividual Rotarian. The Club should makecertain each member becomes acquaintedwith the rest of the members. This can beaccomplished through Club Socials, “CraftTalks”, Vocational visits, sharing projectwork schedules, and mingling with others
during weekly meetings. Rotary is with youalways. As Rotarians, we don’t go homeand hang up our Rotary Hat. Take thetime to find out what your fellow Rotariansare doing in the community — their out-side interests, and their family interestsand accomplishments. Now add in theofferings of self improvement through theDistrict leadership seminars (PRLS) thatwill develop your daily life skills and theopportunity to serve mankind, and youhave what Rotary is all about. These ef-forts will net your Club an increased mem-bership by retaining your current mem-bers, because they do not want to leaveand recruiting will happen on its own, Newmembers will want to join in on the fun!The next time your club wants to do some-thing special, remember that it all starts atthe Club!
CLUB SERVICE = THE FIRST OBJECTOF ROTARY!

Members know that during the year, they will be fined approximately $100 for club operations. It’s fun to get up in front of your friends and share your experiences in exchange for good-natured ribbing and a fine. But some members prefer not to be the center of attention, and ifyou're one of them, what a deal we have for you! Become a member of the Century Club by pay-ing $100 to Robbin by August 25, 2009. You will not be singled out at meetings, and if you mis-takenly are, any fine assessed will have to be paid by the president! Note that birthdays and an-niversaries are excluded, and will still be recognized at meetings. Talk to Robbin now if youwant to take advantage of this limited time offer.

Our Club
The Rotary Club of Santa Maria had its first meeting as a provi-sional club on October 10, 1922. The 19 members choseJesse H. Chambers to be the first President, and George M.Scott to be the first Secretary. The first official meeting washeld on December 5, 1922 at the Santa Maria Inn, and on De-cember 19th the District Governor, Jack Williams, presented theclub with its charter.
Our club was sponsored by the Santa Barbara Rotary Club, andin turn we have sponsored the San Luis Obispo Rotary Club in1923, the Lompoc Rotary Club in 1925, the Guadalupe RotaryClub in 1940, the Santa Maria South Rotary Club in 1973, theSanta Maria Breakfast Rotary Club in 1984, and the NipomoRotary Club in 1997. The Rotary Club of Santa Maria has alsosponsored two Interact clubs, the Santa Maria High School In-teract Club in 1982, and the St. Joseph High School InteractClub in 2007.
Cecil B. DeMille regularly attended our club meetings in Mayand June of 1923 when he was filming the movie “The TenCommandments” at the Guadalupe Dunes. When he returnedto Hollywood he had his prop department make a RotaryWheel, which he gave to our club. This wheel now is housed inthe Santa Maria Historical Museum.
On November 13, 1925 Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, wastraveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco and “madeup” at our club. In 1985 Rotary International President, CarlosCanseca, chose to visit our club over larger and more well-known clubs in Santa Barbara and Bakersfield. Rotarians from
all over the district attended.
In 1996 our club started a major fund raising endeavor that wascalled Monte Carlo. Now this event is called the Rotary HarvestGala and annually raises $60,000.00 for worthwhile projects.
Our commitment to the Rotary motto “Service above Self” isexemplified by the number of different types of projects that wesupport both locally and internationally. We have participated inlocal hands-on projects like the Guadalupe Dunes Center cleanup and the Salvation Army bell ringing at Christmas. We havepurchased dictionaries for all the third graders in the SantaMaria Valley for three consecutive years. Some of our fundshave gone to programs at the Boys and Girls Club and theY.M.C.A. Internationally we have participated in water projectsin Africa and Mexico, and have helped furnish an orphanage inChina. We have donated over $100,000.00 towards the RotaryInternational Polio Eradication project.
The Rotary Club of Santa Maria has over 200 Paul Harris Fel-lows, and has donated over $231,000.00 to the Rotary Interna-tional Foundation.
