Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May
1868 by General John Logan, national commander
of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General
Order #11 and was first observed on 30 May
1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of
Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington Na-
tional Cemetery.
Every Memorial Day, families and communities
across the nation take time to honor those who
made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our na-
tion. Americans observe this special holiday in
many different ways. Here are a few of those tra-
ditions:
Visiting Gravesites — Memorial Day was origi-
nally known as Decoration Day because it was a
time to honor the nation’s dead by decorating
their graves with flowers. Many Americans make
special flower arrangements and deliver them as a
family to gravesites of their loved ones and ances-
tors.
Family and American History — Memorial
Day is a favorite time for Americans to read their
family history, look at old photographs and learn
about their ancestors, especially those who died
in the line of battle. It’s also an occasion for read-
ing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and other his-
toric and patriotic speeches by Presidents and
leaders of the armed services.
Displaying the Flag — On Memorial Day, the
U.S. flag should be displayed at half-staff until
noon. In the morning, the flag should be raised
momentarily to the top, then lowered to half-
staff. Americans can also honor prisoners of war
and those missing in action by flying the
POW/MIA flag.
National Moment of Remembrance — In
accordance with a congressional resolution
passed in 2000, Americans pause wherever they
are at 3 pm local time for a moment of silence to
remember and honor the fallen.
Experience the National Memorials — Me-
morial Day can also be an opportunity to visit or
read about the national memorials in Washington,
DC and others around the country.
Memorial Day Parades — The Memorial Day
parade is a time-honored tradition in cities and
towns across America, where neighbors come
together to remember with pride those who sac-
rificed so much for our country.
Memorial Day Poppies — The tradition of red
poppies on Memorial Day was inspired by the
1915 poem “In Flanders Fields,” by John McCrea.
Seeing the poem and its colorful illustration in a
magazine, Georgia teacher and volunteer war
worker Moina Michael made a personal pledge
always wear red silk poppies as an emblem for
“keeping the faith with all who died.” She also
began a campaign to make the poppy a universal
symbol of tribute and support for veterans.
Through her efforts, the idea was adopted in the
United States and spread to England, France, Aus-
tralia and more than 50 other countries.
Any Rotarians interested in getting a blue Rotary Jacket are encouraged to talk to Rick Haydon at 878-4282. Rick is coordinating an order through All American Screen Printing. The jackets are lined, will have the Rotary emblem on the back along with

THE ROTARY CLUB OF SANTA MARIA
We will be helping Ned celebrate his 93rd birthday Tuesday, June the 1st, at our regular meeting. To honor Ned, lets make this a 100% attendance meeting. Ned’s actual birth date is May 30th.The following are a few of the things I have found
out about this man. Ned is truly the embodiment of our motto, “Service Above Self”
Also, this will be, hopefully, somewhat of a surprise. (nope, I did not send him this Rotator)
Ned’s home Rotary Club was Crawfordsville, Indiana. I could not find a web site for them so I made a phone call and talked to the current President, Mr. Ken Coudret. Ken did not personally know Ned but he sure had heard about him. Ken called around and
talked to several members who did remember Ned and here are their names and comments.
Dick Walker, Charles Price, Claude Johnson & Charles Burkhart
1. He ran Rotary with an iron hand.
2. He worked for Rotary all of the time.
3. A long time member.
4. Very seldom missed a meeting.
5. He was MR ROTARY.
Ned was District Governor of District 656, now District 6560 serving in 1961 - 1962. The following, taken from a brochure introduc-
ing District Governor Nominee Ned Rickett, will add a little insight into just who Ned is.
NED RICKETT, 802 South Green Street, Crawfords-ville, Indiana, who is a candidate for District Gov-ernor of Rotary District 656, has been a member of the Crawfordsville Rotary Club since 1946, shortly after he returned from service with the Army of the United States in 1945. Ned served with the 139th Field Artil-lery, retiring with the rank of Captain. When the ING was called into service in January, 1941 Ned was the Commanding Officer of the Crawfordsville unit, Battery B, 139 F.A. Ned is a past president of Rotary and presently chairman of Rotary Information Com-mittee. He is a member of the First Methodist Church and lay member to the Northwest Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church. And he is chair-man of the Pastoral Relations Committee of the Official Board.
Ned has always been active in civic affairs. He is past president and Board member of the Crawfordsville United Fund; Board member of Montgomery County Chapter, American Red Cross, 1951 to the present; Chairman of the Lew Wallace district, Central Indi-ana Council, Boy Scouts of America; past president and member of Montgomery County Chamber of
Commerce. He is president of the Crawfordsville School Building Corporation, a non-profit corpora-tion for the construction of a two million dollar school building program. He is an Underwriter with the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, joining that company June 1, 1946. Last year he sold over a million dollars worth of life insurance and won the Man of the Year Award of his agency, the C. J. Bloomer Agency, of Indianapolis, and a week's va-cation at the Americana Hotel, Miami Beach.
When Ned returned from his war service, he served
as assistant to the president of Wabash College un-
til he joined the staff of Penn Mutual. Ned is a
graduate of Wabash College with the class of '40.
He is married to the former Francine Gantz of Al-
bia, Iowa, and they are the parents of six children:
Henry 16, Daniel 14, Roberta 12, Roger 8, Kerry 4
and Ned S. 2.
Ned will be another outstanding governor of Rotary
District 656 .

The Grunge Report: Ned Rickett: Still Telling The Story
As I write this, we’ve just hosted our first Volunteer Forum—an occasion for those who do so much for Wabash to return to campus, catch up on the College’s progress, and trade ideas and stories with each other. Initial feedback from the sessions suggests the program was a success, and next year we’ll try to take it from good to great. With so many alumni returning, I got to hear many different Wabash stories. The first came from Ned Rickett ’40 (right). Ned returned to campus from California to receive the prestigious Warren Shearer Class Agent Award for his 54 years of service to the College. In sports terms: He was inducted into the Hall of Fame! Ned came by my office and we talked about Wabash during his days as a student and staff member. He recounted his service in the Pacific and how fate brought him back to Crawfordsville and Wabash College after he was wounded in the War. Ned later served the College as a fundraiser and in admissions, where he led the way in finding a path for GIs to return and attend Wabash. Fast forward to 2009: I told Ned that I ran into one of his recruits. Not one from the 1940s—one in the Class of 2013. That’s right, a brand new freshman. Ned’s still recruiting students of promise to Wabash, and, as luck would have it, I had met this young man and his father at Freshman Orientation! Ned’s continues to tell the story of what Wabash did for him and what it will do today for others.
