“Mayor Lavagnino Honors District Governor Deepa Willingham at Au-gust 17th Meeting”

Thanks for helping fill the room at last week’s meeting, for those who weren’t there, it was quite eventful! DG Deepa Willingham was is-sued a proclamation from the City of Santa Maria by the Mayor himself, the Honorable Larry Lavagnino. In her address to the club, the District Governor reminded us all of the good work Rotary does and of the work that still needs to be done. The press was also in attendance and the SM Times had a nice piece

on Deepa in the paper the next day.

As for our club, with the FUNRaiser looming, we urgently need sponsors and live auction items! Please consider a $500 Silver Sponsor-ship. This will satisfy your obligation to sell 6 tickets and earn you or your business a little recognition at the same time. The extent to which we are able to give to needy causes is directly contingent on the success of this event.

August is Membership month. It’s a great time to look at the benefits that you have received because you are a member of a District 5240 Rotary Club. Sometime in the past, someone gave you a gift that keeps on giving—the gift of Rotary. Rotary is not a gift like clothes or jewelry or even a tool from Home Depot where you know what it is and what to do with it. The gift of Rotary is a box of Legos – full of potential to be many things but waiting for you to turn it lovingly into a finished work of art. Do you remember the moment that you became a true Ro-tarian ? Perhaps it was when you helped improve your community by feeding the hungry, tutoring a child cleaning parkland, or painting the fence at the local Boysand Girls Club. Was it when you went on international project to see first hand the difference that your club is making in the world? Maybe you were on a National Immunization Day and gave two precious drops of polio vaccine to a young child. Your gift of Rotary changes your life, your commu-nity and your world. What have you received along with your gift of Rotary? Did you make new friends who share your commitment to Service Above Self? Has your business grown because of people who want to do business with people of high ethical standards? How much pride do you get when you look around your local community and show your friends and family the changes that you and your

Rotary club have made. In the past, you didn’t even know where Honduras or Niger or Zambia were and now some child in one of these countries has a greater chance of survival and success because of something that you and your Rotary club has done. What a wonerful gift you received. So, I ask you -- with whom have you shared your gift? Each of us knows someone who should and could be a Rotar-ian. The biggest reason that people do not join Ro-tary is that they have not been asked. Before you begin to list the difficulties with asking someone to a Rotary meeting, let me ask you about your busi-ness. Most Rotarians are (or have been) successful business owners or business leaders. Each day you have been concerned with the basic questions of a successful business. Who knows what I do? How do I attract new customers when there is so much competition for their time and money? How do I recognize a dissatisfied or indifferent customer and what do I do about it? If you substitute member for customer, it sounds a lot like Rotary. The next time that you meet someone who you think might make a great Rotarian, remember your gift and all it has meant to you; treat them as you would a new addi-tion to your business, and invite them to join you at your next Rotary meeting. “Family of Rotary” Friday, September 17, 2010

@ Spanos Stadium, San Luis Obispo Cal Poly Men’s Soccer vs. UCLA-7:00pm

Dear Rotary Friends:

We had over 60 responses when we sent out this email request in January. I am hoping that the number of those of you that want to attend will grow!!!

Here are the details for this great event:

UCLA Soccer is Ranked #5 Nationally!!!

The cost of admission will ONLY be $3/person (for adults and students) (The normal

cost is ~$10/person)

In an effort to expand the “Family of Rotary” we would like to invite members of the

Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria (Our member Bill Libbon can arrange for their transportation). What a great opportunity for all these children to see a great game

and get to meet college students.

Cal Poly has arranged for some special events for us such as a Cal Poly player come

and greet our group prior to game and some other really neat stuff!!!

I need each of you to do the following:

1) Send me an email about how many will be in your group (adults, student are all the

same) 2) Tell me how many Boys and Girls Club members you want to sponsor ($3/each)

3) Bring a check to Rotary, payable to The Rotary Club of Santa Maria (check note: Cal Poly soccer)

Cal Poly has also agreed to permit us to “tailgate” prior to the game so maybe someone like Jon McKellar or Joe Goldberg would like to “volunteer” to make this an even more special

event!!! (Sorry, no adult beverages permitted).
