What’s Happening Around Town?Free Bridge Quintet Performs Faust

The Free Bridge Quintet, in partner-ship with the Virginia Film Festival, will perform an original score com-posed by John D’earth to accompany the 1926 silent film classic Faust, di-rected by F.W. Murnau.

One of the best horror films of all time will screen on Saturday, Novem-ber 7, 8:00 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall and will feature the Free Bridge Quintet with special guest, principal percus-sionist of the Charlottesville Sympho-ny, I-Jen Fang. The score, composed by Free Bridge trumpeter and UVA Direc-tor of Jazz Performance John D’earth, was originally commissioned by the UVA Film Society in 2003 for a presen-tation of the restored print.

Roger Ebert exclaims that F.W. Murnau was “The greatest master of horror in the silent era” and Faust was voted one of the best horror films of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

The Free Bridge Quintet is the offi-cial faculty jazz quintet of the Univer-sity of Virginia McIntire Department of Music. Founded in 1997, it fea-tures Jeff Decker on saxophones, Rob-ert Jospé on the drums, Peter Spaar on bass, John D’earth on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Butch Taylor on piano. The quintet has been a staple of not only the UVA and Charlottesville jazz scene, but also the greater Central Vir-ginia jazz scene for more than 10 years.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the

south end of UVA’s historic lawn, di-rectly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds park-ing garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.

Tickets are $15 for the general pub-lic, $5 for students and free for UVA students who reserve in advance. Tick-ets can be purchased by calling the Arts Box Office at 434.924.3376 or by visit-ing artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.

All programs are subject to change. For more information please call the McIntire Department of Music at 434.924.3052.

Virginia Arts of the Book Center’s 20th Anniversary Auction: Shakespeare’s Bad Quarto

The Virginia Arts of the Book Cen-ter will hold its eleventh annual Rau-cous Auction on Friday, November 13 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at its location at 2125 Ivy Road (Ivy Square Shopping Center). The evening will include a live auction, silent auction, raffle, food, drinks, and festivities. The $20 ticket price includes admission, a bidding paddle, a limited-edition print, and a raffle chance at the feature of the eve-ning, a deluxe copy of the VABC’s lat-est collaborative book project, The Bad Quarto.

The Bad Quarto, a name given to the controversy-shrouded first folio of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (“First Quarto,”

or “Q1”), became the VABC’s title for a page-for-page performance of the play. Participating VABC artists immersed themselves in the nuances of “Q1,” a text that includes different names for characters and sections drastically divergent from the text most people know. The artist’s book contains sev-enty pages of collaboratively designed and printed work of which only about 50 copies will be made. The project aligns with the 400th anniversary cel-ebration of Shakespeare, as promoted by the Virginia Shakespeare Initiative.

Individual books will be available for sale, and a deluxe, leather-bound copy will be raffled off that evening. Pre-bidding is now live online and tickets are available online via the auc-tion website, through November 12 at noon; one need not be present to win. Ticket registration will also take place that evening at the door.

In addition to the main feature, a number of hand-made books, prints, etchings, and other pieces of art by local printers at the VABC will be available—as will “throwback prices” for starting bids on some of VABC’s previous collab-orative projects. Look for professional framed art by Creative Framing, a class at UVa’s Rare Book School, and a week in an apartment in Paris. A preview of works and donations can be found from the auction website.

That night you can access the VABC’s Raucous Auction through the “Art on Ivy” entrance. Live auction takes place at 6:20 PM and the silent auction/raffle will wrap up around 8 PM. Food by A Pimento Catering and drinks will be provided.

About the VABC: Virginia Arts of the Book Center, a program of Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, is now in its twentieth year as a community of artists exploring books, paper, and printmaking. VABC exists to promote the values of the humanities through appreciation of the arts of the book, vi-sual and verbal literacy, creativity, and the fostering of traditional and con-temporary skills.

For more information about the VABC Raucous Auction visit Virginia-BookArts.org.

JABA Helping People Save ‘Big Time’ on Medicare & Health Insurance Costs

JABA’s (Jefferson Area Board for Aging) Insurance Counseling Office is now hosting Medicare Open Enroll-ment for Part D (Prescription Plans) and Medicare Advantage Plans from October 15th through December 7th and Open Enrollment for the Afford-able Care Act (ACA) from November 1 through January 30.

Already, through the first 10 days of Medicare Open Enrollment, JABA in-surance Counselors have saved clients over $120,000!

“Our clients have been walking out with a huge weight off them,” says Randy Rogers, JABA’s Insurance Coun-seling Manager, “that is the most price-less thing we can give them.”

JABA can counsel people who are new to these programs, screen for el-igibility of benefits, and help with questions once enrolled. Counseling sessions are by appointment at JABA’s central office in Charlottesville and in Fluvanna on Thursdays.

Note about ACA enrollment: Market-place Certified Applications Counselors are available year round to help with changes in circumstances and special enrollment. During Open Enrollment - in November, December, and January - you can schedule a free appointment to assist with both new enrollments and for annual re-enrollment.

This program is part of a national network of assistance programs: the Virginia Insurance Counseling and As-sistance Program (VICAP), the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the National Coun-cil on Aging HUD approved Reverse Mortgages, the Supplemental Nutri-tion Assistance Program (SNAP), and Health Benefit Programs.

“One of the wonder-ful things about being a REAL-TOR®,” declares Janet Matthews,

“is getting a glimpse into the perspec-tive of your clients.” Matthews, owner of Charlottesville Town and Country, points out that in recent years the global reach of the information age has allowed cultural cross-pollination in unprecedented ways.

“We have become exposed to things we would not have had any access to thirty years ago, hence the addition of Feng Shui to the vocabulary of modern house hunters,” she says. “Feng Shui’s ele-ments of how the house is sited and where particu-lar objects can be placed within it to enhance the energy flow of the home have become important to certain clients. Fa-miliarity with the broad concepts will be helpful to REALTORS®.”

What is Feng Shui? It’s not just REAL-

TORS® who are becoming familiar with the “Feng Shui” of things and which way your front door faces and how your home can maximize good luck and opportunity while lending peace and serenity to your life. But what ex-actly does Feng Shui mean?

Briefly, Feng Shui (pronounced “fung schway”) is a Chinese term which translates as “wind water.” It is related to Chinese philosophy and understanding the relationship be-tween ourselves and the natural world. Through this understanding, it is held, humans are led to live in harmony with their environment.

Since our lives are always affected by the world around us—on physical, spir-itual, and emotional levels—Feng Shui teaches that if we surround ourselves with beauty, with kindness, with mu-sic, and other expressions of a gentle life, we will enhance ourselves and the world around us at the same time.

“A lot of Feng Shui is just common sense,” says Marta Tice of Earlysville. She received her degree in Interior Design from American University and holds a state license as a Certified In-terior Designer, and has been a profes-sional member of the American Soci-ety of Interior Designers (ASID) since 1980.

“I started as a designer about 25 years ago,” she says. “About 10 years ago I took an ASID course in Feng

Shui. After taking it, I realized how fundamental this was to my design work and realized I’d already been ap-plying Feng Shui ideas.”

The whole objective of Feng Shui, she explains, is to increase good energy by positioning furniture and art work in proportion and in balance. “I enjoy working with a client’s inventory by

repositioning and grouping things in a cohesive manner,” she says

“Finding the right balance is the key.”

The balance Tice refers to is found in many aspects

of a room. “It involves not only the placement of furnishings with the architectural elements in the room,” she ex-plains, “but also not blocking the flow of open movement to increase good ‘Chi.’” Chi is a Chinese term for the vital force dwelling in ev-erything. An unim-peded flow of chi is held to be essential to

good personal health and wellbeing.

Sometimes it’s just a question of rearrang-

ing things. Tice cites an instance where she recom-

mended changing the direction of a rectangular kitchen island

that was blocking the whole energy of the kitchen. Just turning it 90 de-grees—even though it stayed the same size—made an amazing difference.

The Elements of Feng Shui“The ancient Chinese philosophy

was all about using the different el-ements,” Tice continues. “These ele-ments are fire, earth, metal, water and wood. You might not use them all in one room, but there is generally wood in flooring and furniture and you might include a metal wind chime. A mirror or a fountain can reflect the ele-ment of water, and plants and greenery can represent the earth.”

Balance in a room is very important and involves not only the proportion, placement, and grouping of furniture, but also the room’s lighting, the color of the paint, and the scale of artwork on the walls.

“The whole objective is to increase good energy by positioning furniture and art work in proportion to the room,” she says. “Many people don’t know how to position a room—they don’t understand how to group like items. Perhaps they have a collection of some sort of small items, but they

514 have them all over the house. It’s nic-

er to put them together because then it’s cohesive and you want cohesiveness within every room.”

Tice also stresses the importance of proportion, “You want the scale of the furniture not to be heavy and bulky in a small room. One of the things I find, especially in condos and smaller homes, is that the furniture is too huge.”

Color and Light are Keys Light is another significant compo-

nent of Feng Shui that brings in the element of earth.

While mirrors can represent water, they can also reflect additional light to give rooms a sense of space and bright-ness. At the same time the living plants that represent life and energy require good light.

Windows and window treatments, lighting and light fixtures, wall cover-ings, and flooring options all contrib-ute to the brightness of a room. Addi-tional ways to introduce illumination might include recessed lighting, accent lighting, task lighting, and the proper placement of lamps.

The Feng Shui of color relates each basic element to particular hues and can often provide very pleasing results although it’s not necessary to absolute-ly use them. The colors are:

Wood: greens and browns.Fire: reds, yellows, orange, purple and pinkEarth: sandy, earthy tones like pale yellow and light brownMetal: white or grey.Water: blues and black.

It’s important to have the right col-ors in the right rooms. “In the kitch-en,” Tice suggests, “you want some-thing that stimulates the appetite, so use warm colors like gold, red, orange, or soft ivory.”

On the other hand, you want some rooms to have quieter colors. “Grey can be soothing and is one of the newer neutrals,” she says. “Some rooms you want to be a sanctuary, so you need col-ors that calm things down. I remember being in someone’s bathroom that was painted red and I couldn’t wait to get out of it.”

Before changing paint colors, take time to observe how light changes during

the day and also how the colors will ap-pear with artificial lighting. It’s also im-portant to ensure new paint relates well to existing furniture and artwork.

Many paint stores offer small amounts of paint mixed to color you are contemplating. This enables people to create a larger sample than those little tea-bag-sized paint squares. If you don’t want to paint the wall itself, paint a piece of plywood or particle board to move around the room to get a good idea of whether the hue works.

What Does All This Mean For Homebuyers?

“You run into Feng Shui sometimes when you are dealing with people who are into that sort of thing,” reports REALTOR® Sandra Collins, an associ-ate broker with Roy Wheeler Realty Co.

She recalls a young Chinese couple interested in finding a property suit-able for opening a restaurant. “We fi-nally found a place they loved,” she says. “They were completely sold on it, but the parents nixed the deal because the door was not facing the right way.”

Another time, she showed a sin-gle woman a townhome that she was ready to buy. “Unfortunately,” Collins says, “the Feng Shui was ‘blocked’ by a fully mature tree right outside the front door and she wanted the HOA to remove it.” The Homeowners Associa-tion refused to take down a perfectly healthy tree.

“We ended up not doing the deal,” she reports, adding that to this day, the wom-an is still looking for something that ad-heres to every element she is seeking.

Collins notes that some people hire a Feng Shui specialist to evaluate a property. “In fact,” she says, “a friend did this. She had a huge king-sized bed in the oddest position, but she felt it really ‘opened up the room.’”

Strict adherence to Feng Shui can make an agent’s life difficult. “It is al-most impossible to find a perfect Feng Shui home,” Collins laments. “Many people say that’s what they want, but they don’t really know exactly what is involved. They want to make their life more peaceful, but it’s really hard to deliver. I think the new open-design homes are a move toward this concept, but I’m not even sure what is an accept-able Feng Shui home.”

What Is Involved In A Feng Shui Home?

The ideal Feng Shui dwelling has the auspicious geographics of a mountain behind the home for support and a body of water in the front. If these are lacking, the situation can sometimes be remedied with substantial trees in the back and creating a small body of water like a fish pond or a fountain in front.

The geographic layout also plays a part. Tice, the interior designer, often employs a Bagua map, which is an an-cient map indicating eight compass di-

rections, each with a specific element. These are:

North: CareerNortheast: KnowledgeEast: FamilySoutheast: WealthSouth: FameSouthwest: PartnershipWest: ChildrenNorthwest: Helpful People

“Using a compass, I determine which direction the front door faces and from there map out the space,” says Tice. When she designed and built her own house, for example, she was very conscious of Feng Shui placement. “I was able to create an auspicious home by using the southeast corner—representing wealth—as my entry and locating interior rooms in the proper placement.”

A home’s entry is important. “I want people to walk though my door and feel peaceful,” she says. “I have nice ar-tifacts in the doorway, and in my foyer I have a water fountain, a red rug, and a crystal chandelier that reflects light—all part of the Feng Shui tradition.”

And her home does, indeed, have mountains in the back to “support” the house while the body of water is in the plans. “My spring project is a so-lar-powered fountain out in the front,” she says.

The Bottom LineWhat about skeptics? “Well, it

doesn’t hurt anything,” says Tice. “I can’t stress enough the concepts of balance and flow. Even if you don’t ‘believe’ in Feng Shui, you can benefit from its philosophy of peacefulness and balance.

“You can use Feng Shui principles whether you are building or remodel-ing,” she concludes. “It’s an old ancient art where each segment of the home represents a sanctuary. Today it rep-resents good design, common sense, functionality, livability, and a soothing environment to create wellbeing.” n

Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Al-bemarle County near Charlottesville. When using a small-pot-of-paint sample, the found the color that looked great on the little sam-ple wasn’t at all what they wanted for their kitchen.

Even if you don’t ‘believe’ in Feng Shui, YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM ITS PHILOSOPHY OF PEACEFULNESS AND BALANCE.

The holidays provide the perfect opportunity for delicious food, exchang-ing of gifts, and gather-ings that bring family

and friends closer together. Unfor-tunately, for many people, holiday celebrations also can become a stress-ful time, particularly for the person tasked with preparing meals and dec-orating the home.

In fact, a recent coupon.com survey reveals that although shopping for the perfect gift was one of the most stress-ful holiday chores for many Americans, overwhelming hosting family for the holidays ranked high on the stress-ra-dar because the host feels a duty to make the holidays a great experience for everyone.

If it’s your turn to host this years’ holiday soiree, here are some tips to help reduce the stress and hopefully provide you with some holiday com-fort and joy.

Stick with Simple DishesThe holidays are not the best time to

try your hand at culinary adventures, says Ashley East, personal chef at Din-ner At Home (www.dahcatering.com).

Selecting recipes that don’t require many ingredients is ideal, which is why East suggests sticking with dishes that require only five or six ingredients.

You don’t want a grocery list that is too long because this can create ut-ter chaos and stress when your coun-tertop is filled with all kinds of herbs and spices, she says. In addition, East recommends choosing recipes that you can make ahead of time.

For example, if you are making green beans, prepare them earlier and when your guest arrives you can cook

the beans for four to ten minutes (de-pending on the rec-ipe) then at the last minute toss them with some cara-melized onions to dress them up.

If your guest will be around the next morning, you can

prepare dishes like baked French toast and banana bread and freeze them now, East adds. “Just make it now while you have time, then when your guest shows up all you are doing is pulling everything out of the freezer the night before.”

Get HelpWhen Barbara Lundgren, an event

consultant at Barb Wired, LLC (www.barbwiredllc.com) entertains for the holidays, she likes to solicit outside

help. “I like to enjoy my guest, so I like to get help whether it’s from friends or catering,” she says.

Rather than doing all of her own cooking or decorating, Lundgren pre-fers getting everyone to pitch in. How-ever, if you decide to go the potluck route, have your guest bring desserts or dishes that are ready to serve, advises East. You don’t want a situation where people are walking into your kitchen asking for salad bowls, cutting boards or casserole pans.

If you love to cook, it’s perfectly fine to tell your guest to bring a bottle of wine or a box of chocolate, instead. For those DIY crafters, Lundgren suggests keeping everything simple and not over extending yourself with way out decora-tions that only adds unnecessary stress.

One way of eliminating stress is to make your food your décor by repur-posing pieces that can become part of your holiday theme. For example, you could use Ritz Crackers to make San-ta crackers by using pepperonis as the hat, ricotta cheese as the beard and cel-ery and capers for the eyes and nose.

If you have young children in the household – whether as guest or your own – have a relative watch them while you do the cooking. A family outing to the park could help lower the stress and chaos in the house allowing you to focus on getting things prepared for the family feast.

Shop EarlyBefore you begin navigating around

in the kitchen, it’s a good idea to out-line your menu and purchase all your ingredients needed to prepare your meals. FOOD52.com advises shoppers to create their grocery list by using programs like Word, Google Drive or a blank email.

First, categorize by listing off sec-tions of the grocery store you plan to hit, i.e., produce, dairy, spices, etc. However, if you are familiar with the layout of the store, you could create the list in the order you will see the items in the store.

Second, gather all your cookbook or handwritten recipes and list the ingre-dients in the appropriate sections. If the recipes are in your head, it might be a good idea to write them out and make sure to include the ingredients on your list.

Third, combine like ingredients. For example, if you are not sure how much butter is needed, just round everything up. Lastly, check your stash. Once you have determined the appropriate amounts needed, check your pantry and make adjustments when needed.

In addition, East suggests buying your pantry ingredients and other bulk

items at places like Whole Foods, Cost-co and Sam’s Club. Get everything early so that the week of the holiday you are just grabbing your produce and meats.

Additionally, try not to get things at the last minute because everyone is at the store. That’s frustrating and only leads to more unnecessary holiday stress. Additionally, East recommends that you do an inventory of pots, pans and casserole dishes. If you haven’t hosted a Thanksgiving dinner in say eight years, realizing that you don’t have a roasting pan while you are entertain-ing a house full of people can definitely cause some unwarranted stress.

Planning a holiday gathering is no small undertaking. Now is the best time to organize your menus and make sure that you have everything needed to prepare your holiday meal. It’s per-fectly fine to solicit the help of family, friends or even professionals in order to make your event a success. The best thing is to plan ahead and be organized and hopefully the family drama won’t get to you. When you stick with dishes that are tried, true and simple, you will survive the holiday chaos without los-ing your sanity. n
