Habs are Back and Better than Ever!By Evy Konstantopoulos, IVB

After last year’s stellar playoff

games, everyone returned to watching the Montreal Canadiens with high hopes about this year’s hockey season. Montrealers and fans across the world believed that this season would be the best one yet, and they were right. The Canadiens started off by winning their first three games against Toronto, Washington, and Philadelphia, but lost their mojo when losing to Tampa Bay 7-1 on October 13. After that mishap, they went on to win their four other games before losing to Edmonton. However, the Canadiens managed to keep up being either first or second in the league, next to the Anaheim Ducks.

After a number of losses, a win, and one overtime game, the Canadiens went on to win 6 games, their longest winning streak so far in the season. Even after their loss to Pittsburgh, which broke their winning streak, the Canadiens led the standings with 29 points. That lead us to their two winning games against the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins, which left the Canadiens with 33 points as of November 23rd.

No one can deny that the Canadiens have been playing better since their last season. They have a better defensive team, with Carey Price and Dustin Tokarski as goaltenders and with fan favorite PK. Subban. The Canadiens have also added Sergei Gonchar to their defensive block and just recently traded

Rene Bourque for Bryan Allen. Their offensive lines are better too, with the Gallagher, Galchenyuk, and Plekanec combo playing very well. The only thing left to see is if the Canadiens can step up during their power plays, which have not

been very good considering they are ranked 27th in the league for power play goals, and let’s hope they maintain their first standing in the league that will lead to playoff victory.

Christmas Short Story (Untitled)By Zoe Yalden, VA

Lizzie shut the door as quickly as she could to prevent the ice-cold air from pervading the household.

“Mr. Marx?” She called out. “I’m here!”

Mr. Marx came stumbling down the staircase, his suitcase in hand.

“Lizzie! I want to thank you for coming at such late notice tonight. The girls are in the living room and I

left some money on the kitchen counter so you can all order in food.”

“ Thank you Mr. Marx!” Lizzie replied. “You are paying me for an entire night shift, right?”

“Sure thing. Will the couch suffice for tonight?” Mr. Marx enquired.

“ Well.. It’s a nice couch but I prefer cash” Lizzie teased.

“ Is that Lizzie?” asked a voice coming from the living room. The two young girls came rushing into the

hall and each embraced Lizzie.

Since Lizzie was able to find more time to babysit Mr. Marx’s daughters this year, the three of them had

become extremely close. At first glance, one may even assume that they were all sisters. Mr. Marx

handed the cheque to Lizzie.

“How are you celebrating Christmas this year, Lizzie?” he inquired.

“I’ll probably just hang out in my apartment and cook a nice dinner,” she said.

“All alone?” Mr. Marx asked astonished. “Why not come and spend Christmas Eve with us?”

“That’s so sweet of you sir, but I have a cousin who will be spending the night with me on Christmas

day.”

“ So bring her along!” He insisted. “Your presence on Christmas day amongst us would mean a lot to

the girls.”

The two girls looked up at Lizzie, their faces beaming in approval.

Lizzie gave it some thought. “Alright then!” she concluded merrily.

Overwhelmed with joy, the two girls began prancing around the room in excitement.

“Perfect! I’ll see you all in the morning.” Mr. Marx said, exiting the house.

On Christmas day, Lizzie and her thirteen-year-old cousin, Antoinette, got dressed up before driving to

the Marx residence. During the ride, Lizzie noticed with concern how many homeless people seemed to

be spending Christmas outdoors without shelter or belongings in the freezing cold.

“ Are you excited to meet Mr. Marx and his daughters, Antoinette?” Lizzie asked her cousin.

There was no response from the back seat.

“Antoinette?” Lizzie asked again.

Lizzie realized that she was not the only one disliking the fact that so many underprivileged people were

spending the night on the streets of the city. Antoinette seemed to be deep in thought while observing

the destitute individuals.

“Why is it that so many of us get luxuries, such as a nice meal and gifts on Christmas Day, when others

must spend this day deprived and hungry?” Antoinette questioned.

“I know that it seems very unjust.” Lizzie answered. “Unfortunately there is not much we can do about

it.”

Antoinette looked away from the window without saying anything.

Throughout the evening at Mr. Marx’s house, Antoinette did not participate in any discussions or indeed

speak at all. She was in a deep state of thought and appeared to be in her own world.

During dinner, she asked if she could be excused. Lizzie began to worry when Antoinette did not

reappear again in the dining room for several minutes.

“I’ll go make sure she’s alright.” Lizzie told Mr. Marx. “Maybe she can’t find her way around the

house.”

To Lizzie’s dismay, she could not find Antoinette anywhere.

“She’s nowhere to be found!” Lizzie anxiously informed everyone.

Mr. Marx and the girls had no luck finding Lizzie’s cousin after having swept the house in search of her

as well.

“I don’t understand...” Lizzie said. “ This is mind-boggling, how could she have just disappeared out of

the blue like that?” The sound of suspenseful nervousness permeated the atmosphere.

“Dad where did all our presents under the Christmas tree go?!” One of the little girls shouted, in a

shocked voice.

“Why don’t we go look around outside?” said Mr. Marx.

“Great idea!” Lizzie replied, feeling guilty and puzzled about the disappearance of her host’s presents.

After the search troop began combing the streets, Lizzie noticed one of the homeless people that she had

seen earlier. Strangely, the person was wearing a new pair of boots that still had tags on them.

“That’s odd…” Mr. Marx said. “Those look exactly like the pair of boots I purchased for my daughter.”

Lizzie had a dawning realization of what might have happened.

“Look over there!” one of the children said. Piles of torn Christmas wrapping paper were on the curb of

the street. Twenty yards further along was Antoinette, looking both guilty and triumphant.

“I thought there was something we could do to improve the awful situation we saw on the way to Mr.

Marx’s house.” Lizzie turned around to Mr. Marx, mortified.

Mr. Marx’s features softened from an angry scowl to a tentative smile.

“Well girls, we may have lost our Christmas gifts but Antoinette has brought us another kind of

Christmas present!”
