SHSM - TRANSPORTATION
Students who complete the SHSM in transportation receive a high school diploma with a red seal of recognition that indicates the specialized learning and experience of the program. Students can look forward to improving their prospects after high school because of the recognition and skills gained from the SHSM. A variety of representatives from the economic sector, apprenticeship training programs, colleges, and universities contribute to these programs.
Students understand:• the scope of knowledge and skill required for success in the
transportation sector• how to use industry standard tools and equipment• the importance of sector-recognized certification• the variety of career options in the transportation sector
Students have opportunity to:• see the connections between their high school studies and
the real world• be exposed to various trades and technologies involved in
the transportation sector• observe, work in, and develop transportation-related
skills• complete approved Dual Credits including Truck and
Coach Level One Apprenticeship• make informed career decisions for a future in
transportation!

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The SHSM Transportation Program allows students to customize their high school experience to prepare for a future in the transportation sector. Pathways may include auto service, small engine, truck and coach, and heavy equipment mechanic.
WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED?
This program meets the requirements for all student pathways and clearly meets the needs of our transportation community. This program will be of benefit for students who: • like to work with their hands and apply the theoretical
aspects of courses• enjoy complex and challenging problem solving situations• like to design, program, and build relevant projects• explore, identify, and refine career goals• want sector-recognized certification training• want a sector-specific high school program leading to
a high school diploma with a red seal that provincially recognizes their achievement.
HOW DO I REGISTER?• Students can obtain an application in the Guidance Office.• No prerequisite is required to enter the program.• All applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance into the program.

SECTOR RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONOR AWARENESS TRAININGAll sector-recognized training is delivered by a certified trainer and includes an assessment and evaluation component. Students receive a certificate or proof of completion as evidence of their skill and qualifications in the transportation sector.• WHIMIS• First Aid• CPR• Health and Safety Basic• Drive Clean• Vehicle Lift Training• Ozone Depletion
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGPlanned activities outside of the traditional classroom setting within the transportation sector may include:• job shadowing• job twinning• 1 to 2 work experience within a specific transportation field• co-operative education• tour of a range of transportation enterprises• attendance at a transportation trade show, conference, job
fair, or trades competitions
REACH AHEAD EXPERIENCESPlanned activities connected with the student’s post-secondary pathway may include:• college/university visits• job shadowing• regional Skills Canada Competitions• tours to transportation related businesses• Career Education Council events
DEVELOPMENT OF ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND WORK HABITS
Students will develop a work plan using the Ontario Skills Passport developed by Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Students will clearly identify the Essential Skills that are needed for life, learning, and work, which are foundational for full participation in the workplace or community. Students build competence and confidence to make connections between school and prospective careers. They gain a deeper understanding of how Essential Skills are transferable from school to work, job to job, and sector to sector.
Using the Ontario Skills Passport, students will track their development of Essential Skills - literacy, numeracy, and thinking skills - and work habits as they make the transition from high school to their post-secondary destination.
