Purpose
I chose this topic for the play center because my case study child wants to be a police officer when he is older.
I have also noticed that he likes to play fairly and make sure other kids follow the rules while playing which relates to the job of police officers.
There is also a big interest with jobs such as police officers, firefighters, and EMTs in our classroom.
Physical Environment
I removed most of the items from our dramatic play area to create the police station.
I added handcuffs, police badges, police hats, magnifying glasses, maps, telephones, a computer keyboard, and fictional books about police officers.
Physical Environment
Literacy and Cultural Additions Notebooks to write tickets with, a wanted sign my mentor teach made, and images of police officers and police stations from Tucson and West Africa.
Observations – Case Study Child
Making a “Call 911” sign
Collecting bail money from someone in jail.
Showing off his police badge.
Working on the “computer”
Arresting someone.
Observations – Rest of Class
Making a missing car sign.
Working on the computer and answering phones.
Watching someone get arrested and wearing police hat and holding handcuffs.
Literacy Examples from Kids
Sign for lost truck with a picture of the suspect.
My case study child’s note that says “Nobody has emergencies.”
“No touching the door” note.
Results• Overall I was really pleased with
how my center went.• My case study child played in the
center every day for a week which was really exciting!
• The other kids in my class were also really eager to play in it.
• It was really interesting to see how much the kids knew about police officers!
