2 Your residence

2.1 Map, public transport connection, shopping facilitiesThe village with its bungalows has reached a certain cult status among students. It is situated quiteclose to the underground line U3 (“Olympiazentrum”), at the edge of the attractive Olympic Park. Thebungalow village is part of the student quarter named “Olympic Village“(Olympisches Dorf). It takes onlya few stops with the underground train to get to university, to the city centre or nightlife quarters ofMunich.

The rows of shops directly in front of the tower (including bakery, organic market, supermarket, post of-fice, take away, bank, copy shop) are basically sufficient to cover your everyday needs. There are alsoquite a lot of doctors of different medical specialities at reach, mainly in 14 Helene-Mayer-Ring, but alsoin other buildings. Moreover, the large 'Olympia-Einkaufszentrum' shopping centre – with a super mar-ket and all other types of shops one could wish for – is just two underground stops away!

2.2 Particular features of your residence

2.2.1 The Olympic Park

The bungalow village is situated directly next to the Olympic Park with its vast leisure-time andrelaxation possibilities and sporting facilities all over the year:

Music concerts, sports competitions, festivals, exhibitions, trade fairs, open-air cinema (in summer) andmany more events of all shapes and sizes are held on the grounds and within the venues that housedthe Olympic Games of 1972. In the sports halls there are water-sports, ice-based sports and football;outside tennis courts and mini-golf grounds. The park is perfect for jogging and rollerblading. The lessactively inclined can enjoy relaxing on acres of lush, green meadows.

All information concerning the Olympic Park, as well as up-and-coming events can be found atwww.olympiapark.de.

2.2.2 The community centre („Gemeinschaftszentrum“/GEZ), „Alte Mensa“ (Old Canteen)

The Munich Student Union has established student self-administration in all of its halls of residence.The self administration committee consists of house speakers and tutors. These student representat-ives are responsible for promoting community life within the hall of residence and maintain contact withthe student union. This allows two-way communication and flow of information between the student uni-on and residents, and helps clear up problems quickly.

House speaker and tutors are elected by the residents themselves. They also agree upon a statutegoverning the functions and activities of the Student Self-Administration.

The Community Centre (Gemeinschaftszentrum 'GEZ'), with all of its facilities, represents a centralpoint for community life in the Olympic Village.

The Student Self Administration in Oberwiesenfeld is a registered non-profit organisation, which is al-ways grateful for new, dedicated helpers to help keep student-life in the Olympic Village so wonderfullydiverse and colourful.

Detailed information on this organisation - 'Studenten im Olympiazentrum e.V.' (Students in the OlympicVillage) – is available at www.oly-dorf.de.

Several external facilities, such as the 'PhysiOlympia' physiotherapy centre and a playgroup/youth clubrun by the City of Munich are also to be found in the GEZ. Regarding internal facilities, the GEZ is hometo the Munich Student Union Student Advice Service, as well as to our administrative office and technic-al administration.

2.2.3 Orientation inside the bungalow village

Look at the appendices 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 to find maps which can help your orientation inside thebungalow village. Appendix 5.1 contains an overview plan, appendix 5.2 a map which shows wastedisposal, advertising columns and the names of the alleys. Appendix 5.3 helps you find post boxes andbicycle storage.

2.3 Your bungalow

2.3.1 Your bungalow’s designation

You have rented a bungalow which is equipped with furniture, kitchenette incl. refrigerator as well asbathroom unit (toilet, sink and shower). Moreover, every bungalow has its own little terrace.

How can I find my bungalow?

Your bungalow is registered with a certain designation, for example: 730 – 03 – 0A – 20 – 0730 = cost centre 03 = street name, Connollystraße 0A = alley 20 = number of your bungalow 0 = type of bungalow (Connollystraße)

To clearly identify your bungalow (f. ex. if you report any damage), you need to tell us the completedesignation (beginning with the name of the street). Please handle your bungalow including all itsfurniture and equipment with care. You agree to this condition also by signing the rental contract.

2.3.2 Your keys When you move in, you will receive the following keys:

2.3.3 Electronic entry system

In addition to your keys you also receive a 'Legic-card', which enables you to enter particular areas ofyour hall of residence via an electronic entry system. Depending on the rights assigned to your card,this may include access to the parking garage (Helene-Mayer-Ring 3), the main entrance to Tower A/B,the main entrance to the GEZ and the door to the washing/drying room.

2.3.4 Misplaced your keys?

If you should misplace your house key at some point during your tenancy, a member of our caretakerteam will unlock your bungalow for you free of charge, given that this occurs during normal duty hours(Monday to Thursday from 07am – 16pm, Friday from 07am – 13pm).

Outside of these hours you may engage a locksmith to access your apartment (call 'MAZ' on 0 89 / 5070 70), but you will be required to cover the charges for this service yourself.

Apartments will only be opened upon production of an ID card (Personalausweis)/passport orvalid rental contract that confirms you as the rightful resident of the apartment.

2.3.5 Electric doorbells and postbox labels

Nameplates on the bungalows’ doorbells are attached by the Student Union. Please do not put anyindividual labels on post boxes, doorbells or doors. Please do not write anything on doorbells and post boxes.

2.4 Reporting damage and repairs

Damage in your room

If you notice any damage in your room during the time of your tenancy, please report this as soon aspossible to the caretaker. Do this by filling out a damage report form (‘Schadensmeldung’). Damage re-port forms and the post box in which these are to be deposited can be found in the washing/dryingroom. Alternatively, you can obtain and re-submit completed forms in the administrative office or thetechnical administration office during office hours.

Other damages and incidents

If you witness special incidents (e.g. fire, burglary, vandalism) first make sure to get yourself to safety.Then immediately call the police, fire brigade or an ambulance depending on the incident. In additionplease inform the administration office of your hall of residence or the caretaker. In case you notice oth-er strange occurrences happening or you become aware of damages other than regarding “Damage inyour room” please also inform the administration office/the caretaker as soon as possible.

2.5 Television, telephone, Internet

2.5.1 Television and radio reception

Television and radio programs can be received by means of a Kessler satellite system. The antennasocket in your bungalow is located next to those for telephone (right socket) and Internet (left socket).An overview of the currently available channels is included in the appendices. Please note that it is notallowed to install dish antennas.

2.5.2 Telephone connection

All bungalows have the makings of a telephone/DSL-connection. These connections can be activatedfor use with either an analogue or ISDN telephone by a service provider of your choice. Adaptors, whichcan be purchased from your administrative office, are required to use the telephone connection sock-ets. The adaptors have an RJ 45-plug and three TAE-connection sockets. Please be sure to only usethe socket labelled RJ 45.

2.5.3 Internet

The bungalows have their own broadband (LAN), with access to the Internet via the MünchnerHochschulnetz (MHN) (Munich Universities’ Network). The computer settings required for establishinginternet connection are outlined in a separate information sheet that you will have received uponmoving in. Should you have any problems establishing an internet connection, you can contact amember of 'olynet', the computer room run by the Student Self Administration.

CostsLAN usage and administrative costs are included in the charges for running costs paid by each andevery resident of the hall, and do not depend on usage. No additional charges are currently incurred forusing the Internet.

To establish internet connection, you will require a PC/laptop with a network interface card and a cableconnecting this to the connection socket (patch cable). Summarised instructions for configuration ofyour PC can be obtained from your administrative office (see 1.1)

This double connection socket must under no circumstances be opened, removed or otherwisetampered with!

2.5.4 Broadcaster license fees

In Germany, all radio and television reception devices require a license. This applies to all devices cap-able of receiving or transmitting radio and television programs (e.g. internet-PCs, televisions, radios andsmartphones).

A basic, all-inclusive fee is charged to every flat. The occupant of the flat, i.e. the adult residing here, isliable for this fee. As a rule, every resident of a flat and all persons registered to this address are con-sidered the legal occupants and are thus jointly liable for the fee. In the case of a shared flat, thismeans that one of the residents is required to submit payment to the ARD ZDF DeutschlandradioBeitragsservice (ARD ZDF German Broadcasting Fee Service) and his flatmates are obliged to pay therelevant contributions to the paying resident.

It is not possible within rental law, that the landlord (Studentenwerk) pays the licence fee for the stu-dents.

People who have low financial means (including BAföG recipients) can apply for an exemptionfrom these fees and cannot be held liable for them.

For more detailed information, please consult the ARD ZDF German Broadcasting Fee Service websiteat www.rundfunkbeitrag.de.

2.6 Technical equipment of the bungalows

2.6.1 Ventilation

There are ventilators in the bathroom as well as at the kitchenette, with a ventilation flap above thedoor. Filters will be changed by the technical staff.

When you turn on the lights in the bathroom, ventilation in the bathroom is started. While ventilation ison, the ventilation flap will automatically open. After turning off the light, ventilation goes on for someminutes. In the kitchen, the switch on the right side (“Schalter Küchenabluft”, see following image) serves to turnon or off ventilation. Here as well, the ventilation flap will automatically open, and close again when youturn off the ventilator.

The ventilation flap above the entrance door can also be opened by means of the switch at the left side(“Schalter Lüften“) for additional airing. Between the two switches, there is an LED indicator. If it glows,you know that the ventilation flap is open.

Please consider also our remarks concerning proper heating and airing (point 4.4).

Forced ventilation: In the bathroom, additionally programmed airing is aimed at reducing humidity in theroom in order to prevent mould formation. Ventilation is automatically turned on three times a day for 30minutes.

2.6.2 Electric circuitry in the bungalows

Fuses are in the lower area of the built-in closet under the stairs. AC: 230V and 50 Hz.

There are fuses for the following areas:

FI circuit breaker

Hotplates

If a fuse has blown or the circuit breaker has tripped, it is possible to plug them in again by yourself.

Please note! In order to avoid overloading the electricity circuits, appliances with a power out-put exceeding 1000W are not permitted to be plugged into the plug sockets in your apartment(e.g. heaters, cooling systems, washing or drying machines). If you are not sure about yourelectronic/electric device, please consult our technical staff. It is strictly forbidden to structur-ally change or manipulate technical equipment.

Furniture lead-through

2.6.3 Hotplates, stove and time switch

The double hotplates in the kitchen are fitted with a time switch. To minimise fire-risk, the hot-plates canbe used for a maximum of 30 minutes. To turn on the hot-plates, use the time switch to select the desired temperature, whilst simultaneouslysetting the cooking time. The maximum cooking time is pre-set at 30 minutes. Once the cooking timehas elapsed, the time switch can then be re-activated, as described above, for an additional cookingtime of max. 30 minutes. Detailed instructions for use of the hot-plates are included in the appendices.

2.6.4 Cable lead-through from ground floor to first floor

You can choose if you wish to have television, telephone and internet upstairs or on the ground floor.There is a tube in the ceiling between ground floor and first floor through which you can lay cables(“Kabeldurchführung”, see following image). If you lay any cables, please pay attention to not do any damage to the lead-through in the kitchenfurniture (“Möbeldurchführungen”, see image above).

2.6.5 Lighting above the entrance door

These lamps serve to light the alleys between the bungalows. They are switched on and offconcurrently with outdoor lighting. If any lamps fail, please inform us by means of a damage report(forms are available at the administration office).

2.6.6 Terrace

The terrace door opens to the outside and is not made for tilting. For airing, ask your neighbour how todo so (the German instruction is untranslatable, translator’s note). If you are not at home during alonger period of time, please lock your terrace door completely. Never leave your bungalow with opendoors.

Cable lead-through

Please notice that no Student Union inventory is to be placed on the terrace. Any damage resultingfrom this (e.g. water damage) is responsibility of the tenant.

2.6.7 Terrace surfaces

Terrace surfaces are made of concrete slabs on a gravel bed to ensure drainage. Please keep the gapsbetween the slabs clean of any garbage and plants.

2.6.8 Exterior blinds

There is a crank on the terrace, (magnet holder, outer window façade) which serves to operate theexterior blinds. The crank is part of the inventory. In case of any difficulties operating the blinds pleasedo NOT use force but contact our technical staff. The blinds are made of synthetic material and thusquite sensitive to temperature. Cigarettes, fan heaters and other heat sources might damage them.Blinds are not to be extended at a wind force of 7 or more (54km/h). Please pay attention to not leaveyour bungalow with the blinds extended.

2.6.9 Privacy on the ground floor

Due to fire safety it was necessary to install window glazing on the ground floor which cannot beopened. Non-transparent panes of acrylic glass (part of the inventory) can be hanged up on the outsideto protect your privacy. To make proper airing possible and thus prevent condensate on frames andwindow panes, please mount the visual cover only if necessary. Attention: Condensate can lead tomould formation.

2.7 Painting your façade It is basically allowed to paint your bungalow’s façade but only with the appropriate wall paint (furnishedby the Student Union). Please contact the student self administration for further details. Wall paint,brushes, and other tools are available at the responsible tutor’s. It is strictly forbidden to use varnishpaint (spray cans) as these paints are neither breathable nor easy to remove. Due to danger ofdamage, please do not either paint door frames, windows and window frames, silicone joints orbalustrades. Please do cover all spaces which are not meant to be painted or blotted. Sexist, racist, xenophobic or other provoking elements have no place in the Olympic Village!

2.8 Concrete walls Due to architect defaults, the walls in the entrance part as well as in the staircase are not painted butbare concrete walls. Please preserve this state of things. If you paint the walls, this will be removed after your moving andyou will be asked to bear the full costs.

2.9 PlantsAlleys between the bungalows have been planted following architectural instructions.You are allowed to plant your own plants in front of your bungalow but please regard the list ofpermitted plants (s. appendix 5.4). Please take care that flowers, bushes etc do not reach into thealleys. Climbing trellises on exterior walls are not permitted.

2.10 Placement of objects on roofs and balconies It is not allowed to step upon the roofs, neither to place any objects there. Nor should your balconyserve as storage (this also looks quite untidy). Please consider that Student Union inventory which isplaced outside could suffer damage due to wind and weather. It is you who will be charged for thesedamages upon moving out.

2.11 Washing and drying roomA room with washing machines and dryers is located in the 'Alte Mensa' (Old Canteen) at 9 Helene-Mayer-Ring (see the plan of the hall of residence). The washing machines and dryers are owned andmaintained by an external firm and their operation requires that coins be inserted. You can open and re-lock the door to the washing machines and drying room using your key (or Legic-card).Please observe the regulations applying to the washing and drying room indicated by the signs.By keeping the door locked it can be ensured that the washing/drying room is used only by residents.The washing/drying room is to be used solely by residents of your residence.

3 Rules for living in shared accommodation

3.1 Registration with the state authorities You are required to register your new address with the state authorities (“Einwohnermeldeamt”). If pos-sible, you should do this within a week after moving into the halls of residence. You can register at any‘Landeshauptstadt München’ (city of Munich) registration office. These offices are known as ‘Bürger-büros’.

3.2 Submission of matriculation certificate Living in a hall of residence of the Munich Student Union is linked with the status of student. You haveto prove your status of student once per semester by showing your matriculation certificate(Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, IB).

Submission IB/summer semester: by the 1st of May at the latestSubmission IB/winter semester: by the 1st of November at the latest

Attention! If your matriculation certificate is not submitted on time to our administration office,we are obliged to give you notice to quit the residence.

3.3 House rules If many people live together in a relatively narrow space, certain rules should be respected. This meansalso to pay regard to your neighbors in the buildings around you. Please pay attention to the houserules which are part of your lease. A copy of the rules was handed out to you with your rental contract.

3.4 CleaningIt is your responsibility to keep your bungalow clean. As the water in Munich is quite hard, chalkydeposit happens to form quite quickly, e. g in the shower. We recommend to dry the shower each timeyou have used it. This helps also prevent mould formation. Please remember also to clean the hot-plates after cooking. We would also ask you to turn your refrigerator to three, as this prevents icing and uses relatively littleelectricity. The refrigerator should also be defrosted and cleaned every six months.

3.5 Mounting personal items If you want to hang up items such as paintings or shelves, please ask the caretaker before drilling intothe wall. It is essential to assure that there aren’t any electricity cables or water pipes in the respectivewall.

3.6 Noise In principle, the house rules apply to the entire hall of residence. This means that you are to avoiddisturbance of peace in the residence, in the house and in the rooms. In particular you should avoiddoing any renovation work or other loud activities between 12 and 14 pm as well as between 18 pm and8 am. On Sun- and holidays, this kind of works and activities is never permissible. Especially between22 pm and 7 am, you should keep quiet. Despite these regulations, complaints from neighbours living in the surrounding buildings are unfortu-nately frequent and mainly purport to unacceptable noise levels during the night.We would thus strongly urge you to please observe the period of quiet time between the hoursof 22.00 h and 07.00 h.

Please respect above all the following rules: ▪ Keep the windows closed when you gather in the common rooms.▪ Keep the volume of the music down to an appropriate level▪ Do not talk loudly in the yard. Apart from rest periods which ought to be respected, we would like to appeal to your consideration foryour neighbours who are mainly working and need to sleep at night. If you make noise and party untilmorning, this will probably damage good neighbourly relations and, generally, deteriorate theacceptance of student residences among the population.

3.7 Security and fire safety It is not allowed in any case walk upon the roofs. You can read this also in the house rules. Due to fire safety, it is essential to completely keep alleys clear between the bungalows. This meansalso that you should not place your bike or other objects there. Apart from this, snow-plowing service inwinter can only be ensured in free alleys and on free spaces. Please note that objects stored in thesespaces will be removed by our technical staff.Due to fire safety, certain bungalow doors have been equipped with a particular switch so that they canbe operated at any time and should never be rendered inoperative. If you are a resident of a bungalowwith this special function, it is important that you always have your key with you when you leave yourbungalow.

3.8 Placement of bikes and other objectsBikes which are not in a roadworthy state are not to be kept on the bicycle parking space. Such bikeswill be marked by our caretaking staff. If the owner doesn’t react and contact us within a certain delay,we will dispose of the bike. It is not allowed to place other objects in the bicycle storage room. Theseobjects will be disposed of by the caretaking staff as well.

3.9 PostingsPlacards, information sheets and other postings are only allowed on the steles meant for this purpose(see app. 5.2). Information hung up on other places like concrete walls or letter boxes will be removedat once by our staff.

3.10 Student self-administration and tutorsOur student halls of residence run both student self-administration and tutor programs. The main job ofthe house representative is to maintain contact with the student union. He or she should also stay inregular contact with the administrative office, as well as acting as a voice for all the residents. The tu-tors' job is to promote social contact and communal living within the hall of residence. They do this byorganising group activities, where they can draw upon the support of the Munich Student Union CultureBureau.

Residents elect a house speaker and tutors themselves. They also agree up a statute governing thefunctions and activities of the student self-administration.

3.11 Parking space rentalYour hall of residence has parking spaces available for rent in the multi-storey car park (3 Helene-Mayer-Ring). If you are interested in renting one of these spaces, please contact the administrative of-fice directly (see 1.1 'Administration'). If not all available spaces are required by students, those remain-ing may be available for rent by other interested parties. Please contact the administration office directlyfor details of the conditions.

3.12 Barbecues The Munich Student Union has established a permanent barbecue area for residents of the Olympic Vil-lage on the so called 'Marienplatz' (covered common area), where it is permitted to barbecue in accord-ance with local regulations until 22pm. As barbecuing represents a serious fire hazard, it is forbidden inall other areas of your hall of residence (e.g. on roof terraces of fire escape balconies).

3.13 Announcing parties The student self-administration and the tutors organize parties and other events to promote communitylife in your hall of residence. And of course, also the residents can use the common rooms to haveprivate parties. Due to the noise that often comes with these gatherings, and possible inconvenience tothe neighbours that this may cause, parties may only be held on weekends (meaning only on Friday orSaturday), and must confirm to certain limitations. You have to obtain the Munich Student Union’sagreement (through the student self-administration) in advance. Please send a written application tothe technical director of your hall of residence (forms for this application are available from the studentself-administration), and do this on time! Generally, the house rules, which are a component of yourrental contract, also apply to parties. It is stated that the time between 22pm and 7am is to be keptquiet. Safety regulations also require that the number of persons present at a party be limited to themaximum number allowed in the particular room(s). Moreover, the self-administration/ the organizer isobliged to take care of the cleaning of the common rooms as well as all the spaces that might beaffected (stairs, outdoor areas etc).

3.14 No cars admitted inside the villageIt is not allowed to drive with private vehicles such as cars, motorbikes or other motor vehicles in ourresidence. Please pay attention to the signs at the entrance zones. Vehicles parked illegally will betowed at owner’s expense. This regulation has been established due to security reasons, as all waysand alleys are to be kept clear for fire and rescue services. Please use our car park (with authorization)if you need to charge or discharge your vehicle. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Summer flowers (annual plants)Annual flowers can be planted without any problems: They will probably not cause any damage to walls or pavement, nor will they grow too big due to their short lifespan.

Bushes/ herbaceous perennialsMany perennial flowers and plants are allowed. Please regard their growth height and width as the alleys are already quite narrow and should not be overgrown in addition. Moreover, there is the danger of allergic reaction via skin contact (phototoxicity/ photodermatitis). 4.5 Leaflet concerning conserving/saving resources

Help save costs for heating, water, power, and refuse collection

Dear tenants,In light of an increase in operating costs and for ecological reasons, we would request that you comply with the following tips. In doing so, you make a personal contribution to the responsible use of resources and help lower the operating costs of your hall of residence.

Heating and airing correctly helps save heating costs and contributes to a good room temperatureand air quality.

Room temperature The correct room temperature for healthy living is between 18 and 20°C. Curtains and furniture should not be placed directly in front of radiators.

Airing roomsRooms should be aired - even at cold outdoor temperatures - by widely opening the windows for approx. 3 minutes to ensure a good exchange of air. Please turn off the heating when you air rooms. Avoid leaving windows open constantly. This will cause ceilings and walls to cool down. When rooms are aired intermittently, the heat stored in walls and the ceiling is not lostand the fresh air in the room will warm up rapidly.

Never air your rooms during the heating period by leaving windows tilted. Humidity from the bath, kitchen, or hall should not be allowed into the room.

ShoweringWhen shampooing or lathering during showers, turn off the faucet and only turn back on as needed.

Tooth-brushingUse a glass of water and do not allow drinking water to flow unused from the tap and down the drain.

Washing dishes Dishes should never be washed by hand under running water.

FaucetsPlease have dripping faucets repaired immediately. A faucet that drips every 2 seconds wastes around 800 liters of water per year.

Toilet flushingPlease watch for leaks from the toilet water tank and usethe economy button on dual-flush toilets.

Computer use Switch your computer to an energy-saving mode when you take longer breaks.Please refer to your operating system documentation for details.Do not use screen savers.

Turn off equipmentAs a rule: turn off all equipment whenyou no longer needit. This also appliesto peripherals suchas monitors, printers, or scanners.

PackagingPlease dispose of food packaging in the containers provided at the supermarket.

Waste separationPlease separate household waste as stipulated and dispose of and recycle paper, glass, etc. separately.

4.6 Security on the grounds of our residenceOwing to the large size and partly open nature of the grounds of the hall of residence, the Munich Stu-dent Union has employed the services of 'Nik-Security' to ensure your safety during the night and in theearly morning. An employee of this company patrols the grounds during this time.If you feel seriously harassed by persons in the grounds of the hall of residence, or threatened by noiseor violence, you can contact this service for help on:

5 Saving resourcesThe Munich Student Union strives towards environmentally friendly conduct in all areas of its work. Wewant to do our bit towards protecting our natural resources that our very lives depend upon. To do this,we need your help! Everyone can save water and electricity; all it requires is a bit of thought and atten-tion. Proper separation and disposal of waste doesn’t only serve to help the environment; it also helpsto keep costs down. Last but not least, proper heating and airing also saves energy.In the following sections, we provide you with a few tips aimed at helping you to conserve energy andresources. In the appendices section you will find a leaflet with a summary of these tips, which you cankeep to refresh your memory.

5.1 Waste disposal Waste removal and disposal comes at a considerable cost, which you pay for as part of your operatingcosts. You can contribute to keep these costs down – whilst simultaneously helping the environment –by properly disposing of your waste. Please use the provided barrels (see appendix 5.2) and separateyour waste (residual waste, plastic, glass, paper, bulky waste, scrap, sheet metal, ...) The plastic container can also be used for other synthetic materials. The metal container also serves fortin plate, aluminium and other metal composite materials. Due to running redevelopment measures, thecontainers can happen to change place, which will be reported to you by information sheets and postfrom the administration.

Remark concerning bulky itemsIf you want to get rid of bulky items, please contact our technical and caretaking staff. Please do NOT just place the bulky items “wildly” on our grounds … ! More information concerning waste disposal and – separation: www.awm-muenchen.de

5.2 Proper heating and airing Proper heating and airing doesn’t only achieve a pleasant climate in your room, but it also helps to savemoney on heating costs and avoid the occurrence of damp and damage resulting from it.

Here are a few simple rules for maintaining a good room-climate:

A healthy room temperature is somewhere between 18-20˚C. At this temperature range, a de-crease in temperature of 1˚C corresponds to an energy saving of approximately 6%. Despitethis however, in order to avoid damage to the building, we would ask students to make sure thattheir room always has a temperature of at least 15˚C. Please take care to ensure radiators arenot blocked by curtains or furniture.

A room full of stale or humid air is unpleasant. A brief airing, preferably carried out several timesa day, can really improve the atmosphere in your room. Even when the outside temperature iscolder, opening the windows wide for about three minutes lets the stale air be exchanged forfresh, oxygen rich air. Radiators should be turned off while the windows are open.As soon as the room temperature has dropped noticeably, the windows may be shut again.Avoid letting walls and ceiling cool down by keeping the windows open for longer. Brief bursts ofairing allow walls and ceiling to retain their warmth, which in turn can warm up the fresh air thatnow fills the room. The fresh air acts as blotting paper and absorbs any moisture that has collec-ted on walls and ceiling. The radiators may be turned up again after airing is complete.

To enable the air in your room to circulate properly and come into contact with all wall surfaces,furniture should always stand at least 5cm away from the wall.

During times when the building is heated, please do not keep your room aired by having the win-dow permanently tilted open. The exchange of air is too slow and the constant stream of cold airthat enters the room prevents the temperature at which the thermostat engages being reached,and the radiators run constantly. During longer periods of absence, all windows should be keptshut.

It is not advisable to let damp air, from the bathroom, kitchen or hallway for example, stream intoyour room. This damp air condenses on cold walls and can even lead to mildew, mould andplaster damage if occurring often. Proper heating and airing are particularly important in such in-stances.

Considering occupancy in relation to room air inside our bungalows,it is important to pay attention to some rules for proper heating and airing:

To avoid the development of mildew and mould formation, please do not have any furniturestanding too tight against the walls but keep a distance of about 5cm to allow sufficient air circu-lation. Mattresses leaned against the walls, piles of books or clothes or sofas/ armchairs stand-ing too close at the walls can as well work as interior insulation, thus allowing mildew or mouldto grow.

After rising in the morning, it is recommendable to briefly and intensely air your bungalow, whichmeans to open your entrance door, terrace door and (in couples’ bungalows) the gable windowsfor about 15 minutes, so humid and stale air can escape and fresh air can circulate everywherein your bungalow. Radiators should be turned off while the windows are open.

The same procedure is recommended when air is too humid after cooking or showering.

Please do not keep your room aired during winter by permanently tilted windows. Surfaces nextto the windows will cool down, which encourages the formation of mould and mildew.

Window glazing on the ground floor is to be permanently cleansed and kept dry. Please use thesight protection only if absolutely necessary, and remove it at night and when you are not athome. Window decorations should still allow sufficient air circulation and heat transfer to windowsurfaces in order to avoid/reduce water condensation.

Clothes horses produce more air humidity inside your bungalow, which encourages mould form-ation. Please place the clothes horse on the balcony, or use those in our laundry/ drying rooms.

During longer periods of absence, all windows should be kept shut, and radiators should be setat 1 or 2 so that room temperature cannot fall below 15 degrees (dew point).

Please do consequently consider these remarks in order to save heating costs(which means, you save supplementary costs for your bungalow) and maintain ahealthy room climate without mould formation.
