MALLIA'S MOMENTS
by Fr. Joe Mallia
"Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets.”
These words from the Book of Numbers in today's liturgy
come from Moses, but they could just as well be the words
of Jesus in our Gospel of the day or the prayer of every
believer today. In the midst of the upheaval in the world, we
seek a voice that calls us back to focus on the presence of
the divine in our midst. Surely there is violence and hatred
all around us. But at every level of civil society people are
struggling to find inner peace in their lives. Stress levels are
extremely elevated for most people. You hear it in their
voices and see it in their faces. Stressed out is the new
normal for most people and they seemed stressed to think
of their lives not being stressed, so we create it for
ourselves. We make situations that are at best
inconveniences into life altering moments of chaos. It is as
if every day must be lived like it is a "reality TV show".
(I almost feel like I should be inserting emojis to highlight
this point).
The need to get away from it all takes on many forms,
legal and illegal. We justify our retreat from being able to
deal with things on a real basis as "needing to keep my
sanity". How is it possible that in a world filled with so
many advances in various fields of study, advances in
technology and advances in convenience that we are at
this point? How is it possible that the world is still filled
with hatred and still we are primitive in our ability to love
and forgive? Can the problem be that we have failed to
find the center of life?
People and society as a result are subject to huge
swings in the flow of life. The advancements which I just
mentioned have sped up the movement of that
swing. People born in the beginning of the 20th century
had more in common with those born in the previous
centuries than those born in this century. A brief look at
history shows the vast changes that have taken place
from the end of World War II for example to the modern
day. The rapid growth and the forceful backlash has
created a society of moral, social, religious, financial and
personal instability. I do not think I am over-exaggerating
when I say that our collective societal heads are
spinning. No one knows in what direction the country or
the world is moving at any point of time. It is almost like
one of those movies where they show one person
standing on a sidewalk and the people and cars and time
are flying past at such a rate that everything is a blur. Is
it any wonder that people are feeling overwhelmed?
"Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets.”
Prophets are people who call others back to the
center. Prophets are people who are not moved by trends
but find balance in their lives through the ability to sort
through that which is of no meaning and find firm
foundation on that which does have meaning. Prophets
are those whose spirit is at peace in God. No wonder
Moses prayed this prayer. Even in his time he could
clearly see the many directions in which people were
headed all driven by their personal desires. We have
allowed our desires to turn life into a competition and
given into an ethos that is best described as Darwinian,
survival of the fittest.
That is why we need prophets. Life is not about only
some surviving, but about everyone living a life of dignity,
love and respect. Life is not a competition. People with
the most when they die do not win, they are still
dead. The person who has lived life loving others and
serving God wins, because the reward of their life is
eternal life in heaven. The sound of the prophetic voice
brings calm to our hearts and our souls because it is the
voice of God reaching into our depth as an
individual. Where is that voice today? Oh Lord, send to us a
new prophet to call us back not to a time of the past, but to a
place of peace in the midst of the world today. Lord, forsake
not your people. Heal our minds and hearts. Take from us
all stress; allow us to breathe in your spirit. Surround us with
the security that can only come from knowing your
love. Free us from all our worldly desires. Free us from
anger, hatred, jealousy, self-righteousness and violence.
Give us the courage to fend the tide of the world and
embrace the truth of the Scriptures which you have
revealed. Hear us O Lord and make us a prophetic, priestly
and kingly people according to your will for the glory and
praise of your name. Amen.
Justice is not revenge
One of the things I often hear is that people are looking
for justice for some wrong that was done to them or to
someone they love. We must be careful in not equating
justice with vengeance or revenge. When someone does
something that is wrong, it is good and right to ensure
there is a just punishment. If a person commits a crime,
they should go to prison, for example. That is appropriate
and fair. The tension rises when a person feels that more
should be done. The New Testament clearly tries to get
us to move beyond the eye for an eye kind of mentality
and even more so from the pre-biblical times of seeking
greater retribution than what was inflicted upon us. The
quest for revenge or vengeance is a never ending
search. It is a monster inside us whose hunger and thirst
is never satisfied. We should always be careful that we
do not give in to this evil desire to avenge the wrong that
was done to us. Wanting the person to "hurt" as much as
I do is a certain path to personal destruction.

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1
An accusation is not the same as being guilty
We are at a point where we have allowed our justice
system to become one of "guilty until proven innocent"
rather than the other way around, and worse, the
accused person is never capable of being truly
innocent. In our rapid news world we have created a
society that is all too quick to reach conclusions, even if
they are wrong. In all things, we must allow all the facts
to come out and we must refrain from snap
judgments. This is life, not a crime show on TV. Things
really do not wrap up in an hour and conclusions cannot
be readily surmised. We must be careful that we do not
allow ourselves to become blinded by our attitudes and
prejudices. By giving in to quick judgments we do not
allow the possibility that the person being accused is
actually innocent. Furthermore, quick judgment does not
allow the accused to ever restore their rightful honor. We
need to get hold of our emotions and allow a semblance
of fairness to reclaim its rightful place in our society.
A final note on this topic
We hear a lot about the State Attorney General’s
calling for a "Grand Jury" investigation. Many people are
not aware that a grand jury is not a trial. It is a rather
one sided event and the conclusion is almost always
written by the attorney seeking the grand jury. In the
case of the Pennsylvania grand jury, much of the
document was filled with the opinion of the attorney. It
was filled with misinformation and it resulted in no legal
action against any priest, bishop or diocese. The burden
of proof is at a low level compared to what is needed for
an actual trial, for example, and the accused is not able
to cross examine witnesses. We again need to be
careful to understand fully what things mean and how it all
works before we make conclusions.
Notice anyone new sitting next to you?
We have been seeing some new faces at mass the past
few weeks from people moving into our parishes, making
the decision to join our community of faith or from people
returning to mass. Please make sure that you welcome
the people around you.
Why all the books in the pews at Holy Family?
I know that the pews have been a bit crowded since we
purchased the new hymnals, but that is a temporary
problem. The softcover book with the readings end at the
end of November and will not be renewed. The readings
for the week are actually in the new blue cover hymnal
and so we are not in need of having the soft cover
books. Once they are gone, we will have more room in
the book slots on the back of the pews and we many even
add another slot if need be. Thank you for your patience.
Thank you
I just wanted to thank you and congratulate all of you on
how well you respond at mass. Whenever there are guests
here it is one of the things that I almost always hear is how
well the people respond and sing at mass. Thank you for
that. I know how much it uplifts me during mass to hear you
sing and respond to the prayer parts. Well done everyone.
Finally
I am away this weekend for a family wedding in
Denver. I will be back in the office on Tuesday
morning. Please pray for my safe trip. God bless you all
and have a great week.

Can Lose”

Eternal, Holy God, I come to You
burdened with worries, fears, doubts
and troubles. Calm and quiet me
with peace of mind. Empty me of
the anxiety that disturbs me, of the
concerns that weary my spirit, and
weigh heavy on my heart. Loosen
my grip on the disappointments and
grievances I hold on to so tightly.
Release me from the pain of past
hurts, of present anger and tension,
of future fears. Sometimes it’s too
much for me Lord, too many
demands and problems, too much
sadness, suffering and stress.
Renew me spiritually and
emotionally. Give me new strength,
hope and confidence. Prepare me to
meet the constant struggles of daily
life with a deeper faith and trust in
You. Let your love set me free, for
peace, for joy, for grace, for life, for
others, forever.

darkness of the college campus and the severity of the abortion-

Christen has great hope for the future because of the passion and

fellowship and to be crafty making rosaries. If
you like to keep busy and chat with others, this
is a perfect opportunity to get out and have
some fun and fellowship. We meet in the Life
Center at 10 a.m. Our next gathering will be on
October 10th. If you have questions or would
like further information, please give me a call!!!
All supplies needed are provided at no charge.

FOOD DRIVE
On the weekend of October 19th - 21st, the Knights of Columbus will
assist Christian Service with Holy Family’s food pantry by running a
Food Drive. Please bring a non-perishable item to Mass with you on that
weekend and there will be a collection container in the gathering space.
All items are helpful, however these are some of the items that are
incorporated into the Thanksgiving baskets: canned pasta, jelly, saltine
crackers, pork and beans, canned fruit, canned cranberries, turkey
gravy, turkey stuffing, after school snacks, hamburger helper, granola
bars, and canned beef stew.
Thank you to everyone who supports our community through the help
and food it offers to the Christian Service food pantry.

Learning Styles
are Important for People of All Ages
People have a variety of ways of learning, depending on the topic,
their situation, and their personal preferences. Here are some
examples:
Joe likes to study with music on.
Bill likes to brainstorm with a group of people.
When Johnny sees a new piece of equipment, he'd rather start
pressing buttons instead of reading the instructions.
Anne prefers silence when she's reading.
Jill draws pictures when she listens to a lecture.
Typically, people (old and young alike) have a dominant sensory
area that appeals to their learning style - visual, auditory or
kinesthetic. It can be so helpful to tap into a child’s dominant
sense to help them in their learning. As a teacher, I like to learn
how each of my students are best able to acquire new information.
It is extremely useful in the classroom or in the home when
helping children learn. As helpful as it is for the parent or teacher
to know the learning style of a child, it is equally important for the
child to be aware of his/her unique learning strengths. This is a
lesson I like to do with my middle school students and they are
always very excited to find out this information about themselves.

Dear St Augustine and Holy Family
Parish Members:
Tickets are officially on sale for the 2018
St Augustine School Auction! Come into
the school office to purchase as soon as
you can, as we have sold out in years
past. When you purchase your ticket,
you also choose your seat in the hall!
We are looking for donations of new
items for the auction. Please bring
donations to the school office. The office
has a form to complete with your
contact information when you make a
donation.
We also welcome any corporate
sponsors. There are options to
advertise in our program, sponsor a
class party, sponsor a raffle at the
auction or even sponsor the yet to-be-
determined specialty drink of the
evening!
Watch for future updates in the bulletin,
including sneak-peeks of the items we
will be offering for auction!
Thank you for your continued support of
our event!

Auction Committee Member
Knowing and understanding learning styles can also be very useful
for adults in communicating with other people and going about
their day to day business. For example, would you rather have
someone draw a map for you or tell you directions verbally? Do
you like to listen to a book while you drive or do you find that
distracting? How can you best remember an important point - write
it down or make up a jingle?
There are quite a few online quizzes that are available to help
determine the dominant sense for learning. This one by Grace
Fleming is simple and fun at https://www.thoughtco.com/learning-
style-quiz-4076781. You might want to try it yourself or with your
child, whatever age they are.
