Rev. George Dalton
Sr. Parochial Vicar
OPV Parishes
Fellow members of the OPV faith community:
We ask you to keep the clergy of our diocese in
prayer during this coming week. Every three
years, the Bishop of Pittsburgh convenes a
multi-day convocation at Oglebay Resort in
Wheeling, West Virginia to provide our priests with
an opportunity to gather for the sake of spiritual
renewal, pastoral and professional development,
and priestly fraternity. The convocation this year
occurs at a very important time when parish
groupings throughout our diocese are transitioning
and merging into larger and more vibrant parishes.
The theme for this convocation is: Come Away
and Rest: Retreat, Relax and Renew. While we
will undoubtedly have some time to relax, the
convocation also promises to provide our priests
with plenty of opportunities to experience renewal
in our priestly vocations. Sessions and talks have
been organized to help us focus and reflect on
such topics as Psalms in the life of a Priest,
Spiritual Direction, Renewal of the Priesthood,
Preaching in Advent, and Spiritual Blessings in a
Time of Transition. In between our meetings and
during meals, the convocation will also provide us
with opportunities to exchange our personal
observations on how the transition is progressing
in our various groupings. I am sure that we will all
gain insights from the sharing of our experiences.
And we will certainly be praying for all of you
during these days.
All of this is done, however, for a more important
purpose: to renew us in the Priesthood of Jesus
Christ so that we may be more capable and
effective as shepherds for you. The convocation
gives us a chance to step back and think about
how we may better serve you in the life of the
Church, especially in the midst of our transition
period.
In like manner, I would like to ask some favors
from all of you. Knowing that transition brings both
challenges and also many opportunities, in
addition to asking you to pray for a successful and
fruitful convocation, I would ask that you pray
about how all of us can work together so that our
transition may have the best possible outcomes;
how Christ can use our collaboration to create a
new Church Alive in the Oakmont, Plum and
Verona communities; and how God may be glori-
fied by our coming together as a new community
of faith. Our greater purpose is to continue the
work of Jesus Christ.
In Christ,
Fr. George Dalton

READING I AM 6:1A, 4-7
Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion!
Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches,
they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall!
Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own
accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with
the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!
Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton
revelry shall be done away with.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 146:7, 8-9, 9-10
R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
Blessed he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed,
gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free.
R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were
bowed down. The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers.
R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he
thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all
generations. Alleluia.
R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
READING 2 1 TM 6:11-16
But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love,
patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal
life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the
presence of many witnesses. I charge you before God, who gives life to
all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius
Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain
or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the
blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of
kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in
unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see.
To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
R. Alleluia, alleluia CF. 2 COR 8:9
Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his
poverty you might become rich.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 16:19-31
Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in
purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with
sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the
rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the
poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of
Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the
netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw
Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father
Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in
water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.'
Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received what was good
during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but
now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent
anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or
from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my
father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They
have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no,
father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will
repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the
prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the
dead.'"
SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“ACTITUDES BÁSICAS” de todo católico según
el Papa Francisco
Tres son las actitudes básicas en la vida del cristiano según el Papa
Francisco: “camino, servicio y gratuidad”.
comunidades cristianas, sean parroquias, congregaciones religiosas, diócesis,
que se olvidan de la gratuidad, porque detrás de esto está el engaño (de
presumir) que la salvación viene de las riquezas, del poder humano”.

Breaking News -
Over 500 people “pigged out” at St. Januarius
Pork Roast Dinner!
St. Januarius pork roast dinner was a huge success! The lives of many were
touched (as remarks were overheard) by the service of close to 2 dozen of the
youth of OPV. Their actions were very much appreciated. Also appreciated
was the generosity of new OPV volunteers; several who took the lead for major
events, increasing their familiarity
with others in the OPV parishes and
witnessing an OPV response of
support to the people of
St. Januarius.
The day included chances for;
15 beautiful gift baskets, a bake
sale that had the quality of a
“bake-off”, $270 pay-off on a 50/50
ticket, And LAST but NOT LEAST the traditional pork roast meal,
prepared and served with such
loving care it could only be labeled Heavenly.
Thanks to all who attended and helped.

MEET THE STAFF
Sister Lynn Miller,
Social Ministry, OPV Catholic

Prior to her current position with the
OPV Parishes, Sister Lynn Miller had
served as part-time Parish Social
Minister at St. Joseph Church in Verona. With the OPV
grouping, Sister Lynn is now the full time social minister for
the five parishes. “ In accepting the call to this ministry, I
have said ‘yes’ to the promotion of unity among the five
parishes, recognizing the Spirit of God active in the good
works of the numerous ministries of the individual
parishes and facilitating a union that would only deepen
God’s work for ALL.” Sister offers a patient attentiveness
to the voices of the parishioners that want to be heard and
tries to encourage each to ask for the Grace needed to be
people of Hope in this uncertain time of becoming one
parish.
Sister Lynn is a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph
in Baden. For the past 25 years, she and Sister Sandy
Kiefer have been foster parents to 91 children in their
Lincoln-Lemington home, the former rectory of the now
suppressed St. WALBURGA Church. Sister considers the
children a gift, teaching her lessons about vulnerability,
trust and surrender. “Children are filled with the
wonderment of God.”
“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”
There will be a planning meeting for those in the OPV involved in the
Angel Tree. If you do any of the following, you should come or send
a representative:
- Process the requests for gifts (from agencies)
- Create and/or prepare the angels
- Assemble trees and place angels on it
- Collect and store gifts
- Collate gifts for distribution to individuals,
families and agencies
Please come to the meeting on Friday, October 4
th
at 1pm in the
St. Elizabeth Room of St. John the Baptist Annex.
Please rsvp to [email protected]
The new OPV Phone System
Our new phone system for OPV is up and
running. You can still call the published phone
numbers for all the OPV parishes and your call
will be sent to a centralized location. From
there your call will be directed to the
appropriate person.
St. Joseph High School
Saint Joseph High School will be having two fall open houses on
Sunday, October 27 from 12-2pm and Wednesday, November 13
from 5-7pm. Come Discover Your St. Joe's! Receive a private
tour. Meet SJHS faculty, parents and students. Students and their
families of any age are welcome. High school transfers are also
welcome. No registration required. Contact Admissions Director Mrs.
