ALL SAINTS CHURCH Web-site — www.allsaintsetna.org

From the desk of the Administrator

Last weekend I was able to be away a few days with the Ladies of Charity National Assembly. It wasn’t in an exotic location. It was here at Station Square. As you might have guessed I was on the liturgy committee. It’s always fun schlepping “a church” to another location. I am grateful to the ladies on my committee who made it rather easy work. Though my time there got interrupted by a need at the Worship Office on Friday. Hrumpf! I came back to a session on using music for relaxa-tion. Sadly, I almost fell asleep during it. I guess that’s a sign that it worked!

Perhaps most interesting was talking to the women present, especially the fellow Pittsburgh-ers. There are a lot of emotions out there in the world – and in here too! Hearing about the abuse crisis and On Mission for the Church Alive! from their perspective was enlightening. I hope I opened a few eyes and hearts to a different per-spective on things. I guess time will tell.

You know, On Mission for the Church Alive! seemed like something so far off in the distance. However, it’s here in just two weeks’ time! There is much to get accomplished for the transition. I’ve been told that it’s surprising to people that I can’t wait for it to get underway! I think when I had to go to the Worship Office unexpectedly last week I realized I am done with that stage of my priestly life. I just want to be here (and there - as in the other three parishes! NOT the Worship Of-fice “there”!). There is so much hope in our fu-ture together. May you know it and feel it too. There really is!

As I look back on the almost nine years I have spent in the Worship Office, there have been some great accomplishments and many major head-aches along the way. Yet as people would tell me what a good job I was doing, I kept saying, “I’m just doing what the Church asks us to be doing. There’s nothing fancy about it.”

Yes, I could see the context and the consisten-cy of our ritual life, yet the treadmill of arranging events was becoming burdensome. I was ready for a new chapter in my life. I had told the Bishop that more than 18 months ago. I am grateful that he listened to my plea.

See you in (a) Church (in the neighborhood)!

Fr. Jim Gretz

Rosary Coast To Coast In a nationwide united voice, we call upon God Almighty, through the intercession of our Lady of the Rosary to heal our country and return it to holiness. Americans across the country are invited to publicly pray Rosary Coast to Coast for Conversion, Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty from wherever they can gather. We are coordinating with all the churches in our new parish grouping—Holy Spirit, St Nicholas and St Bonaventure—in the simultaneous praying of this Rosary from our respective parishes. Join us in front of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto on Dewey Street on October 7th at 4:00 PM. For questions, contact Flo Bogusz at 412-781-6586.

There certainly are a lot of messages jam packed into this Sunday’s readings! The gift of prophecy is discussed in the first reading from Numbers.

There is a scathing condemnation of those who horde wealth in the second reading from St. James. The Gospel itself contains at least three different topics worthy of discussion. I would like to, however, focus on one sentence from Christ in the Gospel reading from Mark which is spoken by Jesus: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” Our lives as followers of Jesus certainly are all about the little things! What we can take from this statement by Christ is that even the small things we do to help spread the good news of the Gospel count in a big way. We might not all be able to do the major things, like volunteering for a liturgical ministry or teaching a CCD class. If you find yourself in that camp, then give your cup of water! Help and encourage those who do the “big stuff” - whether that’s by guiding and encouraging others who might be better able to help to do so, offering financial support to those ministries, or just showing appreciation to the people that do those things. Jesus reassures that even if we just “give our cup of water”, we will still be rewarded!

Yours in ministry, Tom Rishel

BOX

Do Not Prevent Him In this weekend’s Gospel the Apos-tles are worried when they see someone who is not one of them driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus could have responded with

frustration or anger that someone was stealing his thun-der. Instead, however, he welcomes this man’s ministry, responding, “do not prevent him. For whoever is not against us is for us.” It highlights an openness to the sharing of gifts and talents to support the work of Jesus in the world and he seeks to heal, strengthen, forgive and empower others. On Mission for The Church Alive! provides an opportunity for the faithful to look for new opportunities to do good in Jesus’ name. While there are many things our parishes provide for our communities, there are always new ways to inspire faith and serve others. If you’re already involved, welcome the good things others are seeking to do to build up the Church. If you’re not involved, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and be open to where God might be inviting you to be a source of light to others. Visit onmission-churchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin after the 8:00 AM Mass on Friday, October 5th. All day adoration with Benediction at 6:30 PM. Please try to attend and spend some time in prayer before our Lord.

Protecting God’s Children Workshop - Training Adults to Protect Children We will be holding a Protecting God’s Children workshop on Saturday, November 3rd, from 9:00-12:00 noon in the Activi-ties Building.
