SI SIX PARISHES FRIENDSHIP CLUB

Our long awaited trip to Apley Walled Garden finally came to fruition in July and what a lovely varied afternoon it was. We were met at the Apley Farm Shop by head gardener Phil Allen who

then led a convoy of cars through Apley Park stopping eventually near to Apley Hall itself. On

getting out of the cars we looked around and could see nothing resembling a garden and then Phil opened a field gate and led us through a herd of cows towards a small copse. Passing

through more gates our eyes took in a vista of something like an old village with buildings down

one side, semi-derelict greenhouses on the other, but a few words from Phil explained what

exactly we were seeing; on the one side the greenhouses were in the process of restoration,

nearby were huge cold frames and to the right of the track were a row of potting sheds and a

boiler house which supplied heated air to the rear of a wall on which apricots and peaches were grown. As we moved further on we came to the garden itself and a blaze of colour met the eye,

planted in blocks around the garden nasturtiums and marigolds planted to attract bees and

butterflies, then we were led through a huge variety of vegetables, some new, some old types. It was fascinating to see and listen to by our 24 members present.

After the garden tour we went back to the Creamery Café for a pot of tea and a slice of Julie’s homemade cake, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Our members would like to thank all the staff

members involved in making this a very memorable afternoon. Our long awaited trip to Apley

MOTORCYCLING EVENT – 2014 NATIONAL ROAD RALLY

Thank you to everyone who helped with the National Rally checkpoint at

Sutton Hall Farm and as always, special thanks to Ed and Jacky Butlin. We had 161 riders through the checkpoint between 12:00 on Saturday 5th

July and 07:00 on Sunday 6th July. Thankfully, the weather was kind and we had a steady stream of riders to keep us going. They recognise our voluntary efforts and are always appreciative of the welcome they get at Sutton Maddock, plus of course the offer of lovely refreshments. This year they donated more than ever before - £250.63 for church funds. Chris Walker, our treasurer, has reported that since we started in 2004, £1,200 has been donated in this way. We’ve yet to find out if we’ve again been voted the best checkpoint in the country but on the night, two National Rally committee members visited, and along with most of the riders, expressed their thanks and appreciation to us. It was lovely to again have the retired Bishop of Hereford ride up on his green machine for a chat, and of course, tea and cake. The 2015 rally will be on the 4 and 5 July but as I am standing down

asco-ordinator now, we are looking for other(s) to take this over. If you are interested in this, please let me know before 1 September so that I can let

the NR organisers know in good time. Thank you to everyone who has supported the rally from providing bunting, refreshments, time etc, etc (a long list!) and particularly folks in the village

Thursday evenings are Study evenings from September in St Andrew’s Shifnal! Living Faith (Bishop’s Certificate Course) For those who want to study the new Bishop’s Certificate course we will be starting afresh on 25th September –this course runs over a full year and is made up of three, ten week terms. The course is led by Janet Lambourne, Revd Sally Day and Revd Roger Balkwill Going Deeper (our own local second year) For those who want to study further, we are planning a series of short courses to run alongside Living Faith. This will be framed within a study of the Gospel of Mark, the Psalms and the Parables of Jesus and will give time to go into particular themes in more depth. More details will be available soon. Questions of Faith and Life If you feel like more of a beginner, this monthly discussion evening may suit you. We meet on the second Monday of the month at 7.15pm, starting with a simple bring and share supper, and continuing with time to discuss any questions that people bring. Dear Friends

I am writing this letter in the week following the Church of England’s decision to allow women to be bishops. This coincided with the prime minister’s decision to ‘reshuffle’ his cabinet and put three women into leadership roles.

When I last wrote about this topic in 2012, the Church’s parliament made up of bishops, clergy and lay members of the church was about to vote in November 2012, and, as it turned out, the proposal was defeated. It was lost by only the smallest margin of 6 votes in the laity section, whereas the bishops and clergy were in overwhelming favour.

The arguments for and against have not changed, and I am not aware that the details of the proposal have changed much in two years. At least it gets “the monkey off the Church’s back” in terms of making the institution less Victorian with regard to women. But I am less sure about some of the claims being made this week about the impact this decision will have for the Church. Some church leaders have hailed the day – July 14th when the decision was made - as “a momentous day” “a great day” “a cosmic shift” and yes I can agree that after 500 years of the Church of England’ existence we now have a major change in leadership make up.

But the Church of England still has huge issues to face, and I don’t believe that a mix of male and female bishops will be hugely more successfully in dealing with them than a male only ‘House of Bishops’.

Women clergy were introduced into the Church of England in 1994, and now make up one third of ordained priests, though only about one fifth make up the total of full time parish vicars. In those twenty years I am not aware that the Church has turned itself around. But it can be argued that after 480 years of male leadership it is asking a lot of a few women priests to make a huge impact. That will also be said about women bishops, and I expect that those women who are first appointed to be diocesan bishops will come under more scrutiny than will be given to another male bishop.

The Archbishop of Canterbury wisely commented that “the challenge will be for us to model good disagreement and to continue to demonstrate love for those who disagree on theological grounds”

Despite the vote in favour of women bishops, there will still be those who were not in favour. While in 1994, after the decision to allow women to be vicars, some left the Church of England (and some clergy became priests in the Roman Catholic Church) it seems that there will not be an exodus again following this vote about bishops. But we all wait and see, and we ‘watch this space’

On The Wing British Butterflies Gatekeeper (Hedge Brown) – August

The fifth of our 59 species of British butterflies to be featured is the Gatekeeper, also called the Hedge Brown. The Gatekeeper is orange on chocolate brown in colour, with a black eye spot containing two white dots on its forewings and small white dots on its hind wings. The wingspan is 37 – 48mm.

This butterfly spends much of its time basking with its wings open. The Gatekeeper is found in hedgerows, and woodland rides and will venture into gardens. It nectars on many plants - that include brambles, thistles, privet, ragwort, red clover and also honeydew.
