From the Desk of Fr. Anthony Sorgie, Pastor Walk With Mar and Joseph to Bethlehem

A s we celebrate Christmas on Friday, the season will undoubtedly evoke many memories of Christmases past and recall the loved ones who made our celebra ons very special. My most enduring memory of Christmas was decora ng the house. Central to this end was the placing of the Na vity scene under the tree. My mother always placed the figures in just the “right spot,” placing them as though she “knew” exactly how it all took place. And, of course, she would never allow the infant Jesus to be placed un l Christmas Eve. The “fuss” bespoke of her deep devo on to the Holy Family and her own not-so-holy family. Even now, our family Na vity scene is set up as she did it and hopefully with at least half the devo on that my mother had for it. The popularity of the Na vity scene, one of the most beloved and enduring symbols of the holiday season, originated in Italy and is a ributed to St. Francis of Assisi. St. Bonaventure tells the story the best in the “Life of St. Francis of Assisi”: “It happened in the third year before his death, that in order to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to commemorate the na vity of the Infant Jesus with great devo on, [St. Francis] determined to keep it with all possible solemnity; and lest he should be accused of lightness or novelty, he asked and

obtained the permission of the sovereign Pon ff. Then he prepared a manger and brought hay, an ox and an ass to the place appointed. The brethren were summoned, the people ran together, the forest

resounded with their voices, and that venerable night was made glorious by many and brilliant lights and sonorous psalms of praise. “The man of God [St. Fran-cis] stood before the manger, full of devo on and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy; the Holy Gospel was chanted by Francis, the Levite of Christ. Then he preached to the people around the na vity

of the poor King; and being unable to u er His name for the tenderness of His love, he called Him the Babe of Bethlehem.” Perhaps, like St. Francis, you have your par cular tradi ons, be it a na vity scene or a special recipe. Whatever it may be, may it bespeak of our faith and devo on to the Gospel. The Holy Family, though marked by many challenges and trials, remained faithful to God’s Word. As you peer into your own Na vity scene and live out your tradi ons of Christ-mas, may you recognize that all our trials find their resolu on in the simplicity of the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem. May every person and family in our parish re-main safe and healthy and come to know the warm joy of a vibrant faith in Jesus our Lord.

Reading I: Sirach 3: 2-6, 12-14 Fidelity to the Lord implies many virtues. Chief among them is our duty toward our parents. The tradi onal blessings are then listed. Reading II: Colossians 3: 12-21 This sec on is an early bap smal instruc on. It describes the Chris an community which a new member embraces through his/her bap sm. The Gospel: Luke 2: 22, 39-40 This sec on points out the necessity of the Nazareth years in Jesus’ life. It was there that He grew strong in the full experience of a human nature. In that way, He could bring the Spirit of God into contact with every area of our lives.

    260. “Can I receive Communion if I am returning to the Church a er many years?”

Welcome back! There is a step to take before you can be in full communion with Christ. In order to be properly disposed for the Eucharist, “a Catholic must be in a state of grace to receive Holy Communion, and anyone aware of being in a state of mortal sin must first receive absolu on in the Sacrament of Penance." (CCC, sect. 1415) When you were away from the Church, you may have missed Sunday Mass, for example. That is considered a mortal sin for a bap zed Catholic and requires seeking God's forgiveness through the Sacrament of Penance. You may feel anxious or nervous about going to Confession a er a long absence from the Church. Please remember that the primary purpose of this Sacrament is to reconcile us to Christ who waits pa ently for us when we have turned from Him. Remember also that one of a priest’s great joys is being able to convey God's forgiveness to those sincerely seeking it. He will be happy to guide you through it. The Sacrament is offered any me with an appointment — (914) 961-3643 — but also every Saturday a ernoon at Assump on Church from 3:30–4:00 PM and at Immaculate Concep on Church from 4:00–5:00 PM.
