Ofsted – November 2007Expectations of what a school should do in relation to its curriculum are as follows:
•Ensure that it meets the needs of all learners and enables them to achieve high standards
•Take full advantage of all flexibilities which help the school to meet learners’ needs
•Ensure that it is relevant to, engages and hopefully inspires all learners
•Check that it builds on what learners already know and can do
•Make links where relevant across and between subjects and other aspects of learning
•Avoid unnecessary overlap and unhelpful repetition
•Allow choice and scope for personalising learning
•Promote creativity and independent learning
•Ensure that it is taught by people who have sufficient specialist knowledge to recognise pupils’ misunderstandings and turn them into opportunities for learning and know what the next steps need to be in order to ensure that every pupil makes rapid progress
