Nigel explained the scheme to La Baguette. “The idea originates from my time in the USA and thought it ideal to help with providing funds for initiatives and projects for St. Brelade Youth Project.” The ‘tree’ itself graces the showroom at the Mansell Collection at First Tower and already has attracted several well known companies including Nigel’s own businesses who have both bought leaves on the impressive wall display. Nigel explained: “Gold leaves are £5,000, Silver £2,500 and Bronze £1,500. There are 25 leaves of each on the ‘tree’ amounting to £225,000 it total. I would anticipate that it will take a couple of years to complete the tree, but funds received go directly to the project as soon as they are received. He stressed that donations towards a leaf could be stepped over time with no obligation to buy a leaf outright from the start. Message from the Constable

THE Parish is a hive of activity as we move from Spring to Summer. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for some warm sunny weather! We were blessed with a sunny, yet windy, day for the Jersey Normandie Twinning Games at Les Quennevais Sports Centre. The day was enjoyed by the 10 Jersey Parishes that entered with their French twin towns. I congratulate the St. Brelade/Granville team on winning what was a successful, and most importantly, friendly games. I was pleased and honoured that our Bailiff Sir Michael and Lady Birt attended to open the event and extremely

grateful to all who helped to make the day so memorable. On the following day the contingent from Granville participated in the opening of the new Parish petanque terrain. After some friendly competition the terrain was officially opened by Monsieur Jean Paul Grosse, Chairman of the Jersey Normandie Twinning Association. The terrain is open to all parishioners and the Parish team is now up and running Another recent highlight was the visit to St.Brelade of the Lieutenant Governor Sir John McColl accompanied by Lady McColl and their daughter Blaire for the ‘Down Your Way’ Governers Walk. I am pleased that our guests thoroughly enjoyed their walk and afternoon tea in the Parish Hall. I must again thank all those parishioners who assisted. For the first time the Parish held its Liberation Day Service at the Island’s War Memorial at Noirmont which commemoreates the 459 Islanders a who lost their lives during the Second World War. On a blustery afternoon Parish Rector, Mark Bond, held a poignant service attended by dignatories including Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst. It is hoped that this will be an annual service held as part of Liberation Day events. I have recently overseen the launch of exciting proposals for improvements to both the road and carpark layouts in St.Aubin. Thanks to the allocation of over £900,000 from TTS of dedicated “Village Improvement” money, the scheme offers opportunity to make St. Aubin a much safer environmentboth business and visitors whilst also rationalising the differing parking systems which many find confusing. Consultation is currently underway with work due to start in early 2014. The scheme will be monitored by a parish led team chaired by myself. After 17 years of excellent service, our Parish Works Foreman, Bill Shanks, recently retired. I personally thank Bill on behalf of previous Connetables, Procureurs, Roads Committee and Inspectors, staff and all Parishioners for all his hard work and dedication over many years. am sure we all wish Bill and his wife well for a happy and healthy retirement. A parish stalwart not leaving us is Centenier Jeff Hathaway who was recently sworn in for a further 3 year term. Centenier Hathaway has given over 20 years service to the Parish in various roles and wish him well for his new term of office. It was a pleasure to represent the States Members in their annual cricket match against their Guernsey counterparts. Unlike in my debut last year, we managed to comfortably beat the old foeThe trophy sits proudly in the Members room in the States building where hopefully it will remain for many years! Finally a gentle reminder that Branchage Day is just around the corner on Wednesday 10th July. Like me ,its time to get those hedge trimmers out before the Roads Inspectors are out and about. Have a great Summer! Steve Pallett, Connétable

Re-elected Centenier and two new CO’s sworn in at Royal Court by Tony Bellows

Following their respective elections at recent Parish Assemblies, Jeff Hathaway was sworn-in as Centenier with Mr Colin Toudic and Mr David Cox also being sworn in as Officeur du Connetable in the Royal Court of Friday 14th June.. For Mr Hathaway it marks a second term of office having served as Centenier for the last 15 months. Mr Hathaway has a total of 21 years Honorary service in the Parish serving both as a CO and Vingtenier during that time. Former Vingtenier Mr David Cox (not pictured) was also sworn in as a CO together with Mr Colin Toudic for whom this will be his first term. All three officers were supported in Court by Connetable Steve Pallett, Procureur Arthur Morley (not pictured), Chef de Police George May, Centenier Michel

Bougeard and Mr Hathaway’s wife, Caroline. Chef de Police George May said: “We are delighted to see Jeff stand again - his experience is of huge value to the Parish - and in David and Colin I know we shall have two outstanding CO’s. We could however do with more people coming forward as we are still a little short of desired numbers.” v

“I have waited a few months to see how the trend was going and I am now pleased to inform Parishioners that problems with youths has been declining; this too reflected island-wide in fewer youngsters attending the Youth Court. I feel a lot of this is due to the marvellous work carried out by the States Police community officers, Probation Service, the Parish Hall system, our own Honorary Officers and other agencies who work together to direct youths away from the road leading to the Youth Court. Some times a Centenier has no option to present a youth to the Courts, but let me assure you Centeniers will do their upmost to keep a youth out of the Court system and that is where the agencies can help. Please remember I am always available to talk to any parent who feels I can help in any way, and I stress “talk” not preach. If I can not answer their questions I could certainly direct them to someone who could. Please contact me on 07797 773534. they wanted to talk about or places they wanted us to visit” Throughout the day there were also a number of roadside checks with the help of Honorary Police and DVS, who talked to islanders about the Fatal Four driving behaviours; Speeding; Drink Driving; Mobile phones; and Seatbelts. Inspector Garwood said: “There was a lot going on and a lot of opportunity to meet officers and chat about issues, suggestions or just say hello. “We police this island with the consent of the public so it’s nice for the public to see who it is that will be helping them if they do come into contact with the police at anytime.” v

All the new homes will be for rental. Hoarding has already gone up around the site and local schools are being given the opportunity to paint murals on the panels to encourage community engagement and brighten up the area during construction. It was anticipated that the successful contractor would be on site by July this year, with the properties available early in 2015. However, before work starts there is now to be a second ecological study of resident wildlife to comply with planning conditions which, Connetable Pallett says, is

likely cause a delay while solutions are found that will satisfy the environment department. A recent survey revealed a large number of reptiles on the site including slow worms and green lizards. Housing Minister, Deputy Andrew Green, said “The development of the Belle Vue site is an important step forward in the provision of homes which meet the requirements of modern households. These developments support the Housing Minister’s policy of delivering new affordable homes and ensuring compliance with Decent Homes Standards within ten years. This will be the fourth new build project for the Housing Department this year with work starting at Phase 2c Le Squez, Journeaux Street and Langtry Gardens, as well as Belle Vue.” The Minister added “My proposals for social housing reform highlight this as a key area of focus. The incorporation of the Housing Department into a wholly States owned Housing Management Company will allow us to continue with our programme of improvements to achieve the Decent Homes Standard.” v

‘Parishioners Remember’

I will never forget the day the adults started acting strangely, dancing and calling out to each other. I was playing in the back yard when my father called me indoors to listen to the wireless. "What's a wireless?" I asked. He was indoors by then so I hurried in to join the family. In all the excitement I remember there was a lot of laughing and crying and everyone was hugging each other. My father stood over by the fire place with a strange piece of equipment in his hand that I had never seen before. It was attached to a dark coloured box-shaped thing on the floor and had wires attached to something I recognized as a battery. Sounds and voices came from it and my father told everyone to be quiet because Winston Churchill was going to speak. You could have heard a pin drop as Dad said softly "we have waited a long time for this moment". We heard the British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, say "our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today." There was silence in the room. It was hard to believe that the long war and the occupation of our islands were over. When I asked my father where the

wireless had come from he explained that it had been in the sitting room all the time, in a cupboard under the floor next to the fireplace. He went on to tell me that, when the Germans arrived in Jersey at the beginning of the occupation, they requisitioned his brand new Studebaker car but, before they took it away, he had very carefully removed the radio so that it did not look as if there had ever been one. If they had caught him with a radio he would have been punished or, worse still, sent to Germany. Many detainees were sent to Germany from Jersey and never returned. They died over there. My father's car was never returned to him but I have a memento - that radio is in my loft. v

Accident of history More than a car park, but a memorial park. by Tony Bellows

IN 1961, the States agreed to the purchase of “Woodford Park” on behalf of the public of the Island. But the park was not given its present name of “The Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Park” until 1966. The reason for this was one of those curious accidents of history. The Jersey Evening Post had sponsored a memorial to the late Sir Winston Churchill, who had died in 1965 by way of a “penny fund” with members of the public contributing. The Publics Works Committee was tasked with finding a suitable site, and suggested The Royal

Square was the best place, but the States decided otherwise. Consequently, the Committee had to quickly find another suitable locale, and decided to put the memorial in Woodford Park, and rename the park accordingly. On 5th December 1966, the Bailiff, Sir Robert Le Masurier unveiled the memorial. Also present on the chilly December morning were Lady Le Masurier, Mr Arthur Harrison of the JEP, the President of Public Works, Deputy Reg Jeune, and Mr M.B. Gulliver of L’Etacq Quarries, together with around 70 members of the general public. Sir Robert The bronze relief portrait of Sir Winston Churchill’s head and shoulders was sculpted by Mr Anthony Gray. The memorial stone on which it sits is made from a naturally hewn granite from L’Etacq. To keep the natural hew, only the base of the stone was worked, and also the panel for the inscription; the remained of the stone is as it was when it came out of the quarry. It is a fine monument to the great war time leader. v

Snow damage Still in flower! March blizzard leaves scars across the Parish by Jeff Hathaway

IN mid-March, just when you thought spring was just around the corner, Jersey was treated to an icy Siberian blast and blizzard conditions which brought the island to a standstill. Drama unfolded in St. Brelade when two people were seriously injured by a falling tree on the Railway Walk. ‘Trees were falling like skittles’ according to Honorary Officers who battled to help locate them. “At one time both Mont Les Vaux and Mont au Roux were completely blocked by fallen trees and waist high drifts. Full praise must go to those officers who despite the appalling conditions worked tirelessly to keep roads open and parishioners safe” said Centenier George May. Although the snow continued into the night and the following day, a partial thawing did allow some traffic movement and by the third day most roads had been cleared of trees, snow drifts and abandoned vehicles but only to reveal that a considerable amount of damage had been caused. Several embankments had become unstable through uprooted trees and many more trees and broken branches littered the roadside having been hastily cleared away at the height of the storm.

THERE may not be the usual Parish in Bloom Competition this year, but as winners in the 2012 competition, St. Brelade are still to represent Jersey in this years RHS Britain in Bloom national event. “There is a little confusion” say the Bloom Group. “The Parish in Bloom competition is in effect the heats stage, the winner being put forward into the subsequent years national competition - Britain in Bloom. Judging for St. Brelade is taking place as planned on Monday 29th July - and we hope to do well’ The Bloom Group have had a busy spring planning for the event. The weather however has again bee rather unkind, a cold spring resulting in tubs and baskets being rather late in coming into flower and therefore late in being put out. However, the warmer weather that arrived at the beginning of June has worked wonders and the displays are starting to

LAST year Brian Clarke decided to make a sponsored sky-dive in aid of Sanctuary House, but because of inclement weather, had to postpone the event several times. But on 5th May, he was told that the jump instructors were in the Island, and the weather would be suitable.

Mont au Roux was partly closed due to an unstable embankment and work was undertaken to rectify the situation. Unfortunately in the process a large number of trees were lost A fallen tree also de-stabilised part of an embankment on Le Mont Les Vaux. “However, the subsequent works in the area, which also reduced the road to one lane for several days, was not as a result of remedial work required but premature action on the part of the landowners misunderstanding of the situation in creating a proposed driveway yet to be approved by Planning” Constable Pallett told La Baguette. He added: “Although there is not a full estimate of tree losses, Honorary officers believe that it could be as many as 60 - possibly more. Many road surfaces have also been damaged by both ice and tree roots pulling up the tarmac. Remedial work has been undertaken but the cost of full repair is still being assessed.” v

After being instructed in operational matters, he was soon dressed in a jump suit strapped to an instructor, sitting in a small aeroplane with a big square hole in its side though which they would make the jump. At 1,000 feet they closed this door. The view from that height was spectacular, with the sea

shades of translucent blue. The plane circled until it was 2 miles above the Island, and then they opened the door, and he left the plane, sitting on the instructor's lap. This was how he described the descent: "Over we go, falling and twisting and steadying, face down, looking at the approaching Island - it is approaching rather fast, then the parachute opens and the wind noise is gone and we float. This is nice I thought, until the instructor demonstrates his skill at twirling. I plead ‘that makes me really queasy’, so we revert to a float as I hyperventilate, and think to myself that this raised around £17,000 and I have earned it." As the ground approached he had to lift his legs, which was a struggle in the tight jump suit with straps binding him, so that instead of sliding on the beach, he flipped over with his face down in the sand, and his instructor on top of him! But it is a safe landing, and they both walk away. Would he do it again? He says that "for me the moral of this story is that walking is best!" v

Parish still to represent Jersey in 2013 ‘Britain In Bloom’ competition by Tony Bellows

develop as hoped and should, by judging day, be at their very best provided, that is, the weather continues to be kind. With the cancellation of the Tourism sponsored Parish in Bloom, the Group say that they are delighted that the RJA&HS have stepped in, introducing a new class to their annual garden competition for ‘Best Parish Hall’. St. Brelade are of course taking part. There are also RJA&HS categories for hotels and commercial premises and the Bloom Group would encourage all local business to consider entering too. Full details are available from the Parish Hall on 741141 or from Pam Laurens at RJA&HS on 866555. Closing date: 15th July v

Constables’ revise branchage laws

The Comité des Connetables are proposing changes to the Loi (1914) sur la Voirie , the law which governs the Parish branchage. If passed, the following major changes will take place: The branchage visits shall be carried out in the three-week period starting on 24th June each year and in the three-week period starting on 1st September in each year. This allows greater flexibility in timing of the Visite du Branchage now that spring growth tends to start earlier. If there are multiple occupants of a property such as a block of flats sharing a communal area

then the person liable for the foncier rate would also be liable if the branchage is not cut. This would be the co-ownership association (in the case of flying freehold); or the company (in the case of share transfer flats). Failure to cut the branchage by the date of the Visite would incur a civil penalty, not exceeding £50. A notice would then be levied on them specifying the branches, obstacle or other deleterious matter that is to be removed and specifying that it is to be removed within a week. If they fail to do this, they would be guilty of a further offence punishable by a fine not exceeding £500. They would be able to choose whether to have the matter dealt with summarily by the Centenier or by the Magistrate. The maximum penalty a Centenier may impose is 40% of the penalty for which the Magistrate could impose. The Connetable could also arrange a third party to undertake the branchage work required and to recover the cost as a civil debt from the person who should have undertaken the work. v

The ‘Q’ Gardens project was launched in September 2005 in partnership with the St Brelade’s Rectory and Jersey Youth Service. The project is based in a meadow at the rectory and it’s aim is to give outdoor practical skills and experiences to students who are identified by the school as probably going to leave school at 16 or go into a work related learning course at Highlands. In the meadow the students have planned, costed and constructed a nature trail around the perimeter of the meadow, including features as a pond, willow dome, raised pathway and bridge. This year the current students have designed an allotment area for members of the community to access. They have cleared the whole site and have also designed various pathways that run through it. The cost of the projects have been met by the students winning grants from various organisations, for example Bosdet Foundation and Lloyds TSB in the past, and more recently Waitrose and Freelance Garage/Toyota. In early March, six young Year 11 students; Ozzie Gordon, Tom Ludlow, Daniel Turmel, Sophie Morin, Alasdair Hood and Aiden Brookfield, presented their work at QGardens over the previous two school terms at St. Brelade Church Hall in front of an audience of around 50. Teacher David Heaven from Les Quennevais School opened proceedings with an outline of the project and its aims. ‘to give the students the skills and knowledge that they will need to be a successful employee, initially on work placement but

finally once they have left school or college.’ Following his introduction each the students spoke eloquently and confidently about the various aspects of the project they had been involved with – ranging from environmental management, knowledge of equipment and health and safety, vegetable growing on their small but productive plots and the introduction of livestock - 2 small pigs – with the assistance of local pig-farmer Jon Hackett – and of their general experience of the project which they agreed all had thoroughly enjoyed After the students superb presentations, Mrs Sarah Hague, soon to become the new Head Teacher at Les Quennevais School, praised the students in presenting their work in such a professional manner and also for their ‘commitment and perseverance’. Youth Leader Nikki Brown explained of the importance of the project which helped in the transition from school-life into the workplace. After the presentation, Parish Rector Mark Bond summed up saying he ‘was very impressed with the students’ and describing the project as a ‘journey into the future – a journey that the students had taken a huge part in shaping its path.’ The students then led everyone down into Q Gardens itself to show the results of their work and achievements – also their new friends ,the piggies who were happily munching away in their enclosure and seemingly oblivious to their celebrity. v

St. Brelade Youth Project at Communicare is getting a much-needed make-over thanks to the Lloyds TSB Foundation for the Channel Islands. The Project has recently received £10,000 from the Foundation and work has begun to revamp the tuck shop, install booths for computer games and to introduce a more efficient signing-in system for the members. Senior youth worker Bradley Cooper who has run the project since December last year said it was the first phase of on-going refurbishment to increase its appeal to young people. ‘We are grateful to the Lloyds TSB Foundation as their generous donation marks a fresh start so we can make the project a place that gives young people what they want. Our members were consulted over the current plans as we very much want them to be involved in the running of their club,’ he said.

LAST school term saw the premature retirement of Colin Masterman from the headship of Mont Nicolle School. Jersey born Colin had a long and varied career in Education in Jersey. He initially was a late returner, spending a year as Sabbatical President of his college student union. He finally secured a post as a ceramics teacher, with a little science thrown in, at the now defunct d’Hautrée Boys School. Three years later saw him move to Grainville to prepare a technology block for the impending move to co-education. His role developed and he became head of Creative Studies before being seconded as the Island wide adviser for design technology; a role that he fulfilled nomadically for several years in his Fuel Supplies sponsored “Shell” van. A secondment to Les Landes School allowed him to expand his primary school repertoire and three years later he was promoted to the headship of St. John’s School where he remained for almost five years. Finally he was successful in gaining the headship of Mont Nicolle during the middle of its 2001 rebuild and during that time successfully opened a Nursery within the school

Pedalling for charity

The project has been in the Communicare building since 1985. It is a local charity and runs independent of, but still works closely with, the Jersey Youth Service. They also operate an outreach service, going out and about Les Quennevais at night to engage and build relationship with young people in the community. The Lloyds TSB Foundation for the Channel Islands has donated in excess of £12 million to charities since it’s inception in 1985. It is a grant-making trust that decides on and makes donations to charities in both bailiwicks. The Foundation is legally independent of the Lloyds TSB Group and an independent board of trustees determines the policies. The Chairman of the local foundation is Jurat Stephen Jones and the Executive Director is John Hutchins. Mr Hutchins said: ‘We are always pleased when the Foundation is in a position to help the youth within the Channel Islands and we are delighted with the progress being made with St Brelade Youth Project.’ v

The ladies of the Red Houses branch of Marks and Spencer have recently pedalled their way to raising over £400 for Jersey Hospice. Store manager Marie Forrester told La Baguette: “All of our staff were very keen on the idea of a charity event and after putting some thought as to what they might do chose to ride exercise bikes right outside the store - for an the equivalent of two-times around the island. It was a huge success and we were delighted at the

Speaking to La Baguette Colin maintained that sometimes being in school is “too much like school”, and he has always promoted extra mural activities such as Neolithic days, residential stays at Crabbé and St.Aubin’s Fort and the superb Base de Plein Aire in Guerlédan. “Taking children out of their comfort zone enables them to grow as characters” and gives them real life skills. “Hands on activity is far more potent than chalk and talk” he said; a philosophy stemming from his time as technology adviser. “It has been a privilege to have been a part of the fabric of St. Brelade for a decade,” he said, “and I will miss being part of the community, but it is time for a bit of fishing, kayaking, sailing and gardening.” v

On 15 May, the Jersey Organic Association held a showing of the film “Fresh” at Les Creux Bowling Club. It was introduced by the Chairman of the Association, Brian Adair, (pictured opposite) who explained how it highlighted the case for healthier, more sustainable food. Made in the USA by Ana Joanes and subtitled “New thinking about what you are eating” , the film is a perceptive look at what is wrong with our conventional food production system; it contrasting mass

THE sun shone warmly on the amphitheatre and stage in Reg's Garden on 18th May when some very talented singers and musicians performed to a relaxed family audience in a bid to win £500 and the opportunity to sing at the Opera House later this year. Over 5 hours the competitors entertained the judges: Jane Wakeham, Carrie Cooper, Harry McRandle and Warren Holt who in true 'X Factor' style gave critiques of the performances; Warren giving the Simon Cowell 'frank and honest' approach to criticism. Kevin Pamplin ably compered putting the performers at ease and keeping the flow between acts slick.

Earlier this year, there were two specially arranged visits by the ACSL 6th Trinity Cub Pack to the Jersey Astronomy Club at Les Creux, with Cub Leader Katrina Rondel. The Club Secretary, Jodie Masterman, prepared a Powerpoint presentation entitled “What is Astronomy”, which took the cubs through such topics as the tools used to study celestial objects, and the moon, planets of the solar system, the sun, stars, constellations , finding the pole star and galaxies. The cubs also played a game in which they had to identify the planets from an inflatable solar system set, and holding them, stand in the right order. There was also a

production methods with organic environmentally friendly farming. Industrialised farming techniques involve masses of animals crammed together in unsanitary sheds, pumped full of antibiotics to prevent diseases, crops sprayed with highly toxic pesticides, and fields requiring heavy doses of fertiliser to compensate for the depleted soil. By contrast, the farmers depicted in “Fresh” have free range farm chickens, cows and pigs, and use traditional practices such as field rotation and soil enrichment with earthworms to produce fresh organic food that is healthy to eat. While Jersey does not have the mass industrialised farming of the USA, and we can still enjoy the sight of the Jersey cow grazing in fields, cheap convenience foodstuffs often come from such sources, as the recent recall of food tainted with horse meat demonstrated. Buying local products and organic and fair-trade products helps to boost the local economy, lessens exposure to harmful pesticides, and improves the taste and quality of your food. v

They gave wonderful entertainment in the final 'sing-off' before the judges' decided to award the 'Reg Factor' prize of £500 to the exceptionally talented singer-guitarist Kieran Brown (pictured opposite). The event was held to raise funds for the charity 'Hands around the World Jersey' which supports projects in Uganda and Rwanda. Annually since 2010 Jersey volunteers have gone to Muko School in Bugarama in Rwanda to renovate it in many ways . They have worked alongside the local people and been inspired by how their efforts have such a big benefit on the community. The school has gone from 1,800 to 2,800 pupils, with the upgraded facilities and better teaching provision. Reg's Garden is perfect for outdoor charity events, such as coffee mornings and 'Tea Dances', email [email protected] for more details. The playing surface is surrounded by green oak timbers and now seed has been sown on the grass area disturbed by our efforts. The official opening of the “Bouledrome” took place on Sunday 9th June and was performed by the Constable of St. Brelade and the President of the Granville Twinning Association. After the short speeches teams from the

respective twinning association played some sharply contested games against the Parish Team before joining together for lunch at the Parish Hall. It is hoped that a petanque match will now form part of the annual twinning visit. St. Brelade is now one of ten parishes competing in the JPA Inter Parish League which will run through until the end of the year. The St. Brelade team only came into being last year and now has twenty four players. Some are experienced, having played for many years, but the majority are new to the game but they are keen to learn. The group now intends to meet on a regular basis at the new St. Brelade “Bouledrome” for social games and practice but they will also be competing regularly in the Inter Parish League. Who knows, the spur of playing for their parish may improve their game and lead on to greater things. If you are interested in learning more about the game and sport of petanque please contact team captain Joy Hart at [email protected] or telephone 741460. Case for shark eggs

Where is summer?

This summer recipe is provided by Nick Jouault

First in a occasional series highlighting St. Brelade’s shoreline and marine environment by Tony Bellows

It’s origins as a word explored by Tony Bellows

Recipe Corner:

A whole fish of about 2lbs will serve 2 people. The fish should be gutted and ideally scaled (scaling is easiest done when the fish is fresh), but the fishmonger can do this for you. Lay the fish on a good length of foil which when rolled over will give two layers or more of foil around the fish. Cut several slices along the fish and place some garlic slices within. Sprinkle or cover with herbs such as basil, oregano, marjoram, crushed fennel seeds (or a splash of Pernod), rosemary can be placed in the stomach cavity as can onions, optionally add a small amount of dried chillies. Lay and cover the sides of the fish with onion slices, sprinkling each side with cooking oil and a liberal amount of soya sauce. The above processes may be best

When we say 'sharks eggs' we mean the black and sometimes brown (hopefully empty) 'mermaid's purses', most commonly those of lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinuis canicula), a member of the shark family. The egg cases, with embryos inside, are attached to rocks by the female dogfish, After the dogfish hatch the egg cases break free and frequently wash up onto our shoreline and beaches. Dogfish around Jersey are very common and some fishermen find them a nuisance, but feeding mainly on decapod crustaceans and fishes they are good indicator of a healthy marine environment. Their specific distribution around Jersey shores is not

We might be asking where has summer gone, but where does the word itself come from? Summer is the second and warmest season of the year, coming between spring and autumn seasons; reckoned astronomically from the summer solstice (21 June) to the autumnal equinox (22 or 23 September). It is an old English word, first mentioned in 825AD in the Vespasian Psalter – “sumur & lenten”, and has had various spellings – sumor, sumer, somer, sommer, symmer

fully known, but as their egg cases are attached to rocks in the intertidal zone, the south east coast is likely to be the most ideal breeding ground. Spawning can take place almost all year round except mid summer although there are seasonal patterns in spawning activity thought to be equated to sea temperature. As a bottom feeder, adult dogfish are often brought up in trawl nets, but being of little commercial value are thrown back - although larger ones are landed and sometimes sold as ‘rock salmon’. v

done one side at a time as it can be a bit fiddly. Make sure the fish is wrapped well and tight in the foil so as it maintains a tight seal during cooking and turning. Now place on the barbecue and turn to avoid burning every 5 minutes or so, especially if the barbecue is very hot. 15 to 20 minutes should be enough. You should try and avoid over cooking the fish, if uncertain open the foil and check that the fish is cooked to the bone at the thickest part. When done the fish should be easily be lifted off the bone going in on the centre line and scooping off away from the backbone and serve quickly on to plates. Serve with Jersey new potatoes, carrots, and courgettes v.

“La Moye” is a place name meaning a heap, usually stony. The name comes from the Jersey Norman French word “mouaie” and is given to promontories whose character made them resemble large heaps, whether viewed from the sea or inland. Guernsey also has a place called La Moye for the same reason, and other Parishes in Jersey have variants of the name – Moie, Moée, Moez. The granite quarries of La Moye, St Brelade supplied stone for the Thames Embankment.

Not a lot of people know that!

In the heart of the communityDefibrillators save lives in an emergency, but do you know where they are located ? by Jeff Hathaway

DEFIBRILLATION is a common treatment for life-threatening cardiac arrest. Defibrillation consists of delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the affected heart with a device called a defibrillator that allows normal sinus rhythm to be re-established by the body's natural pacemaker. St Brelade has a number of AED’s (automated external defibrillators) located around the Parish together with trained operators in attendance. These vital pieces of equipment can and do save lives in an emergency! Please use this guide to locate the nearest one to you, and times when they are accessible:

Liberation at Noirmont

A summer ‘Storm’First St. Brelade Liberation Day service at headland memorial by Tony Bellows

Church presentation to provoke thought by Mark Bond, Parish Rector

LIBERATION Day this year saw the very first St Brelade’s Parish Liberation Day Service held at Noirmont Point. Constable Steve Pallett worked with in conjunction with the Channel Islands Occupation Society and former Deputy Bob Hill. A letter in the JEP on 22nd August 1945 suggested that Noirmont headland should be purchased for the people of Jersey. Prior to the war, the headland was privately owned and off limits to the public. This letter led to a lengthy debate in the States, ending on 22nd January 1947, when they finally agreed to purchase the headland on condition it be retained as a War Memorial to all those Islanders who lost their lives during WWII - some 450 men, women and children. The price of the headland was £9,000 of which £1,187 and 16 shillings was made up of public subscriptions. The Memorial Stone that we see today was placed by the Public Works Dept. on 9th May, 1970 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Liberation, at a cost of £25. A simple service was led by the Rector, the Reverend Mark Bond, after which four wreaths were laid at the base of the memorial by Constable Steve Pallett, Chief Minister Ian Gorst, the President of the Channel Islands Occupation Society, Paul Burnal, and Bob Hill on behalf of the Jersey Human Rights Group. Faces of the Great WarJersey Heritage project to collect images for exhibition by Tony Bellows

NEXT year will be the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Locally, Jersey Heritage is planning to mark it in several ways, one of which is a project called “Faces of the Great War”. The purpose of the project is to collect copies of images of Islanders who played a part

AS I write this, storms and floods are racking central Europe and the great rivers of Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia are causing mayhem. Even here in Jersey, visitors are remarking about the persistent cold wind which is keeping the summer from us. Whether we like it or not, Global Warming is happening and humanity’s activity will be having an effect – the only thing to argue about is how much? We are utterly dependent on this earth and owe it a duty of care for future generations, if for no other reason than that. For Christians, there is a further imperative as we believe that God is deeply involved with the world in all its forms and has entrusted us with its care and management. As human beings we are clearly relational creatures which means we understand that the way we live does affect others whether close at hand or far away. At the most

basic level, how we live – use energy, buy food etc., create rubbish – will have consequences for our children and grandchildren. For this summer season, St Brelade’s Church has commissioned a thought-provoking presentation called “The Storm”, which challenges us to contemplate the world in which we live and God’s desire for us to be caring and wise stewards of this beautiful place we are privileged to call home. I invite you to visit your Parish Church and watch “The Storm”. Life is far too precious to be taken for granted. Every blessing to you. v

in the war as servicemen or civilians, mount an exhibition and create a visual memorial of the Great War. In 1919 the States of Jersey created a Roll of Service; the Great War Study Group are working on a revised and updated version of this. Jersey Heritage proposes to put a face to the names. Between April and July 2013, Jersey Heritage will hold collecting days in each of the twelve parishes. We are inviting parishioners to bring along their photographs, letters and objects relating to the Great War to be recorded, scanned and photographed while they wait. They also want any information about the part played by the Island’s overlooked French community. There will be a short talk about the project on Monday 15 July at St Brelade’s Parish Hall from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm after which curator Chris Addy, Julia Coutanche and colleagues from Jersey Archive will be on hand to take notes, scan images and talk to people about their material. As well as the special collecting days in the parishes, Jersey Heritage will also be holding other collecting days at the Jersey Archive and Jersey Museum throughout the year. For more information, please contact Julia Coutanche at the Jersey Museum on telephone 633342 or email [email protected] v
