Value of the monthThis is the question on our minds with Courage being our Value of the month for the remaining week of April and the month of May. We thought about Superheroes and what makes them courageous but then considered how we can be courageous in everyday things. The children and I explored how courage is an attitude of the mind and heart not about how clever, big or strong you are. We also thought about how taking courageous steps can be good for you and looked at how this value often can be good for us in discovering new and surprising things. Well done to all our children who have been involved in SATs tests these past few weeks. This has involved enormous courage and reward will follow!

ISSUE 29 | April – May 2015
Many of you will know that we have given a higher priority to music throughout the school this year and as part of the planned activities we were delighted to welcome back ex Deputy Headteacher, Jenny Dickson with the Dacorum Symphony Orchestra. Jenny has had a long term passion for music and has played in an orchestra for many years. The children were mesmerised by the pieces played and for many of the younger children, they shared that this was the first time they have seen an orchestra live. The children were also able to explore the sounds of the individual instruments and the role each one played in the overall composition.
Breakfast Club
Many parents have once again expressed a desire for the school to run a breakfast club. Where there is a need expressed, we are always happy to help. In the autumn term, we will once again be exploring the possibility of a breakfast club as we will have two new cohorts attending the school since the last time this was explored. If the demand is strong and financially viable, we will see what is possible. Look out for details next term.
What is Courage?
Congratulations!I’m sure you’ll all want to join me in recognising Di Murray after she was awarded the Hertfordshire long service award. Di has worked in the school for well over 30 years and has tirelessly served thousands of children (including many of our parents).
Di has seen many changes over her time at school and our recently refurbished kitchen, complete with a new dishwasher, cooker and boiler is helping ease the task of providing hundreds of meals every week.
We are all really proud to have Di on the staff team and she often goes above and beyond when catering for the children, tailoring meals for children with allergies or medical conditions.
Well done Di and we hope to have you as our school cook for many years to come!

Stars ofthe week
Science WeekWe hope you enjoy this selection of pictures taken from science week which was enormous fun. The week started with a special assembly and I showed the children several magic tricks which rely on science to work. We explored the properties of balloons, fire and how a seemingly empty and crushed can of coke can reseal itself.
Following on from the assembly, the children were treated to at least three afternoons dedicated to exploration, investigation and curiosity using a range of short experiments.
The week finished with a special, extended Friday achievement assembly where the children showed their best work from the week and explained what they had learnt. Judging from the reactions and feedback from the children, I’m sure it won’t be too long before we do another curriculum focus week.
PlaygroundI’m pleased to announce that the next instalment of our artificial grass will take place over the summer holidays. The grass has been a big success this year creating more space for the children to play, less mud inside and outside the building and less washing!
Please could I ask all parents ensure their children are supervised in the playground before and after school. A few children have been hurt or nearly hurt through avoidable incidents. In the meantime, please stay clear of the ramp on the brig whilst the red tape remains in place. Part of the wood is damaged and the company have arranged a repair to take place on Friday.
Loom bands for charityChildren in Y4 are eager to sell their loom band creations to raise money for Great Ormonde Street Hospital. A number of creations will be available to buy such as a loom dog, special bracelets and large items. The children have agreed that small items can be bought for 50p and the larger items will be priced at £1.
If you would like to support the children in this venture, then please send your child in with the appropriate amount of money in a marked and sealed envelope. The loom bands will be available for the first week back after half term during break times.
Printer CartridgesThe FOPHS team have kindly agreed to collect used or unwanted printer cartridges. A box will be available just inside the front entrance of the school so do pop in if you have any spares lying around.
After we have collected enough cartridges, we are able to raise money for the FOPHS account through this recycling initiative.
to everyone!Well done
