Message from the President

International Christian University has been offering its Summer Courses in

Japanese program for almost 50 years to students from all over the world. In

Summer 2020, the novel coronavirus prevented us from carrying out the

program, and the situation does not seem sufficiently ameliorated to offer it in

the usual way in 2021. However, given the undoubted pedagogical and cultural

value and importance of this program, we have decided to offer it online. The

pandemic cannot, and should not, deprive you of the opportunity to nurture

yourself in Japanese language and culture. I hope that, with the assistance of

the information technology tools, our SCJ program in the summer of 2021 will

present you with an unforgettable experience of traditional and contemporary

aspects of Japan.

Message from the Director

International Christian University has been offering its Summer

Courses in Japanese (SCJ) for almost 50 years. This past summer, due

to the corona virus, we were unable to proceed with the program for the

first time; but that has made us all the more determined to go ahead with

SCJ in the summer of 2021. And so, although at this stage we are unable

to plan for a full scale residential program, we are keen to provide

students with the opportunity to take part in SCJ on an online basis. And,

having spent the past few months adjusting to the challenge of online

teaching and adjusting our teaching methodologies and pedagogies to

this ‘new normal’, we are confident that we will be able to meet the

expectations of this year’s students.

Needless to say, we would love to be able to welcome all the SCJ

students to our campus for the summer of 2021. But we believe that we

have come up with a program that will meet the needs of our students

whilst ensuring that we adhere to the current guidelines and expectations

surrounding learning in the corona era. As such, although we will not be

able to operate entirely as normal, we look forward to welcoming you to

our program and will do our utmost to ensure that you receive a positive

and rewarding educational experience.

equivalent to ICU regular term courses, worth five units of academic credit. Classes are kept as small

as possible. A balance of all the language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - is taught

at each level.

The course offerings listed below are subject to change depending on 1) the number of students

accepted, and 2) their Japanese language abilities as determined by the placement test. C-Sp

(Japanese as a First/Heritage Language: Special Japanese Program) class will not be offered for

2021 SCJ.

C1 (Basic level : CEFR A1)

An introductory course, intended for students who have no previous knowledge of Japanese.

The content of the course includes pronunciation, speaking skills, listening practice, reading and

writing. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to have acquired essential grammar,

a basic vocabulary, Hiragana, Katakana and a total of 55 kanji and be able to communicate in simple

and practical everyday situations. The focus is on situations directly related to the student’s activities

and surrounding environment.

PREREQUISITE: Those who have no knowledge of Japanese script are expected to learn Hiragana

& Katakana as a prerequisite for joining the program. The following are some

websites to help learn Japanese.

Introduction to Japanese https: //a1.marugotoweb.jp/ja/introduction.php#japan_knowledge

Training - Hiragana https: //a1.marugotoweb.jp/ja/hiragana.php

Training - Katakana https: //a1.marugotoweb.jp/ja/katakana.php

C2 (Basic level : CEFR A1/A2)

A continuation of C1 or the equivalent. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to

have further developed competency in the basic language and mastered a total of 102 kanji. The

focus of situations is expanded to include the student’s contact with other people.

C3 (Basic level : CEFR A2)

A continuation of C2 or the equivalent. Upon completion, students are expected to have acquired

mastery of basic contemporary Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and a further 94 kanji. With this

foundation, we hope that students will be able to express themselves in both spoken and written forms

at a level necessary for daily university life.

C4 (Intermediate level : CEFR B1)

A continuation of C3 or the equivalent. This course is for students who have completed basic level

Japanese and have mastered the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It aims at

achieving a smooth transition from Basic to Intermediate Japanese. At the end of the course, students

should be able to communicate in basic Japanese, incorporating a fundamental knowledge of culture.

C5 (Intermediate level : CEFR B1)

A continuation of C4 or the equivalent. Aims to develop the four language skills further, and trains

students so that they can use Japanese to deal with practical matters in their academic as well as

social life. At the end of the course, students should be able to read authentic materials with the help

of a dictionary, and to express their opinions.

C6 (Intermediate level : CEFR B1/B2)

A continuation of C5 or the equivalent. Aims at establishing a solid base for students to fully utilize

Japanese in academic as well as in social contexts.

C7 (Advanced level : CEFR B2)

A continuation of C6 or the equivalent. Prepares students for attending courses taught in Japanese,

writing assignments, and participating in discussions.

Placement in classes is determined by a placement test which will be conducted online.

The placement test website will be opened on June 28 (Mon). From June 28 (Mon) to June 30 (Wed),

students will be able to complete the test at their own timing. Detailed information will be notified to

all students who are admitted to the program.

At the end of the course, the SCJ office will provide a Certificate detailing the grade attained and the

number of classroom hours. This will state that the Summer Courses in Japanese are equivalent in

content, teaching method, assessment and rigor to the corresponding regular term courses at ICU,

which are assigned five academic units of credit. Students who have this certificate should not have

problems transferring the grade attained in SCJ to their home academic institutions.

Note: Students must attend at least two-thirds of all classes to receive this certificate.

i. All students who were accepted for SCJ2020 will be admitted (with no screening

requirement);
