April 2020
Our Six Parishes Welcome Rev’d Dr Andy Larkin
Editor needed! Three months have passed since I gave notice of my retirement as Editor of The Grapevine with effect from June. There
has been no response from any of the three villages and time is slipping by. I stepped in as an inexperienced volunteer
back in 2008 and hope that there is someone out there who will now do the same. I’m happy to support and mentor a successor but will definitely be retiring as Editor after the June issue. It would be a shame for it to disappear! AJW
A large congregation comprising parishioners from the six villages, ecclesiastical participants and visitors, friends and family witnessed and took part in a moving Licensing Service in which our new Vicar, Reverend Dr Andy
Larkin, was installed as Priest-in-Charge of the six parishes of Barford, Sherbourne, Wasperton, Charlecote,
Hampton Lucy and Loxley. The service took place on Monday, 3 February, 2020, and was led by the Right
Reverend John Stroyan, Bishop of Warwick. The Installation Ceremony was conducted by the Venerable Sue Field, Archdeacon Pastor of the Diocese. The service was held in the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Hampton Lucy, and
the spectacular apsidal sanctuary provided a splendid backdrop for a moving ceremony. Music was provided by
Robert Stagg on the church organ and Barford Church Choir who led and lifted the singing of the hymns beautifully. A convivial gathering followed in the adjacent school when wine and a splendid buffet was served ,
provided by the Church Wardens and Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI, enabling everyone to meet informally and
introduce themselves. Our new Vicar clearly enjoyed a memorable occasion which marked the beginning of a new
chapter of ministry in our villages. Welcome Rev’d Andy. AJW

Dear friends,
As we face towards Easter, I encourage you to join in with the journey of Holy Week. The ancient discipline of
marking the critical moments in Christ's journey provides a much-needed pause in our busy lives and brings
tremendous spiritual benefit.
Holy week begins on Sunday, 5 April - Palm Sunday. To mark the transition, we have the Caramba Theatre
Company performing their Passion Play at St Peter's Barford on Saturday 4th April at 7pm. This will be an
excellent and memorable evening. Caramba has been touring this play for many years, and it is well respected. I commend this evening to you as a unique way to focus our hearts and minds as we enter Holy Week. Entry is free
of charge. A retiring collection will be taken for a charity of Caramba's choosing.
We will celebrate Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday at both Hampton Lucy and Wasperton. This is a key
moment on our journey towards Easter Sunday.
On Good Friday we will be offering something a little different from previous years. Starting at 2pm at St Peter's Barford, we will have an hour-long Tenebrae service. Known as the Service of the Shadows, Tenebrae offers a
calm meditative place to soak our hearts and minds in the Crucifixion narrative. This is a powerful service of
music, scripture readings and poetry with the church building especially prepared to visually aid our focus.
Then we come to resurrection Sunday. There will be services in all our parishes as we celebrate the incredible moment and reality of Christ overcoming death.
Once again, may I encourage you to join in with this spiritual journey that you may seek and experience God in a
new way.
Wishing you Christ's peace,
Andy Revd Andy Larkin, Vicar
Loxley Neighbourhood Plan Loxley Parish Council would like to thank everyone who voted in the recent referendum on the Loxley
Neighbourhood Development Plan. With a very high turnout for this type of election (39.46%) there was an
overwhelming majority in favour of adopting the Plan. 102 voters (86.44%) voting in favour and 16 (13.55%) voting against. The Plan will, over the next few weeks, be adopted by the District Council and will become a formal part of
statutory planning guidance. We are pleased with the result and the turnout - thank you! GJ

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI At our February meeting the 2020 resolutions were collected ready to send to Corunna House. We also
shared the Thank You letter from Shipston Nursing Home regarding our donation of £72.70 donated instead of exchanging Christmas Cards. Our February speaker was Jane Neary, an assessor for Therapy
Dogs Nation Wide, a non-profit making charity. She gave us an insight into the training of dogs used in nursing homes,
schools and hospitals. She was accompanied by Harry Potter, her four year old Chihuahua. He was a very well
behaved visual aid and was later photographed with some of the WI members. The pet photograph competition judged by Jane was won by Helen Hoggarth. The speaker at our March meeting was Katriona Collins from Charlecote. Her
talk was entitled a Sumptuous Bunch. She demonstrated how to make three different sized bouquets using relatively
cheap supermarket flowers and foliage from the garden. These were raffled and three lucky winners took a flower arrangement home. Katriona judged our competition and Anthea Cockshull won with her prettiest floral mug. Our
next meeting and 101st birthday party on 1 April at Hampton Lucy Village Hall has now been cancelled due to
the Covid - 19 virus situation. For more details please speak to one of the committee. The status of the May ‘Resolutions’ meeting is under review and members will be informed of developments and any alternative
arrangements by e-mail. PT/HD

Plant Centre. We’ve introduced a new loyalty card at our Plant Centre, especially for our regular visitors. Pick up your card with your next plant purchase.
Buy 9 plants and get your card stamped
for each plant to receive a £5 discount
off your next purchase when your card is full.
Car park work. You may have noticed
some changes in the car park. We've removed several trees, many of which
were non-native and some that were in
poor condition when carefully inspected. The work needed to be done before
nesting season and prepares the car park
for improvements to come. It's never an
easy decision to fell trees but we were given permission by Stratford District
Council to do the work. Next winter you
will see both tree and hedge planting going back into the car park. Over this winter just gone we’ve already planted 450 hedge whips as well as 21 trees in and around the parkland including oak, copper beech, service, alder, lime,
crab apple, hawthorn, hornbeam and rowan. Future plans also include a further 1000 metres of hedging (probably
more) in the parkland plus a small woodland. Don’t forget to look out for the lambs in the parkland! MG

Carice Singers Concert Postponed.
Sadly, the much-anticipated choral concert with The Carice Singers in the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Hampton Lucy on 14 March had to be postponed as another victim of Corvid-19 (coronavirus). An instruction was issued by
the diocese only 24 hours before, advising cancellation of such events in churches - a decision that was completely
out of our hands. The concert would have highlighted the superb acoustics of the building, acting as a launch platform for the re-formation of the Friends of St Peter’s with the aim of conserving the building and providing
much-needed facilities such as toilets and a small servery. The organisers apologise for any inconvenience and
share the disappointment caused by the late cancellation. A refund of pre-payments will, of course, be made if so requested. It is to be hoped that the coronavirus epidemic will have passed by the time of our next spectacular
concert, the St Peter’s Prom, scheduled for September. We shall be looking at restaging the Carice Concert when
their busy schedule allows. [email protected] AJW
