CHICAGO, 6 Jan—Asian automakersdethroned Detroit as the biggest sellersin the United States in 2009 after Gen-eral Motors and Chrysler succumbed tothe strain of the economic crisis, indus-try data showed.

Total industry sales fell 21.2 percentto 10.43 million vehicles in 2009, ac-cording to Autodata.

That is the lowest level since the 1983recession and drastically below the 15to 17 million vehicle range posted in theprevious 15 years.

GM and Chrysler saw their sales suf-fer more than most after seeking billionsof dollars in government aid and restruc-

turing under bankruptcy protection. While Ford managed to both stay afloat

and increase its piece of the shrunkenmarket, the Detroit Three’s overall sharefell to 44.2 percent of their home marketfrom 47.5 percent in 2008.

Asian brands captured a 47.4 percentshare in 2009, up from 44.6 percent in2008, Autodata said. It was the first timethey gained a bigger piece than GM,Chrysler and Ford combined, which helda 60 percent share as recently as 2004 anda 70 percent share a decade ago.

European automakers saw their pieceof the pie rise to 8.4 percent from 7.8 per-cent in 2008.—Internet

German new car sales up23 percent in 2009

FRANKFURT, 6 Jan—German new car sales jumped23 percent in 2009 but began to slow in December aftera cash-for-clunkers scrapping scheme expired, figuresreleased on Tuesday by the VDA auto federationshowed.

Through the year, 3.8 million vehicles were regis-tered in Germany, the biggest European car market, which the VDIK association of foreign auto manufac-turers said was the highest level since 1992.

In December however, registrations fell five per-cent from the same month a year earlier to 215,400vehicles, the first annual decline since February.

Sales of small cars in particular were boosted lastyear by a car scrapping premium worth a total of fivebillion euros (7.2 billion dollars), part of a broad gov-ernment stimulus programme aimed at pulling Ger-many out of recession.

The popular scheme ended in September. This year is thus set to see slower sales, which VDA

forecast would fall to between 2.75-3.0 million.German auto production fell 10 percent last year to

3.41 million vehicles, while exports were down by 17percent, the VDA figures showed.

Some 30 million German bankcards hit by 2010 bug

FRANKFURT, 6 Jan—Around 30 million high-techGerman bank cards could leave owners high and dry, bank associations warned on Tuesday as the fearedY2K computer bug cropped up 10 years later than ex-pected.

The problem that hit cardholders trying to use cashmachines or make payments throughout Germany andabroad stems from computer chips unable to recog-nize the year 2010, and could take up to a week toresolve, the DSGV savings and regional banking as-sociation said in a statement.

A global alert had gone out 10 years ago amid wide-spread fears of a similar problem, dubbed Y2K for theyear 2000.

More recent cards that contain a computer chip de-signed to provide extra security have been affectedwhile older ones with just a magnetic strip on the backappear to work normally.

DSGV said around 20 million “electronic cash” (EC)cards, also known as “girocards,” and 3.5 million clas-sic credit cards issued by its members had been af-fected. EC cards are direct debit instruments which donot allow owners to buy on credit.

The world’s biggest chip card maker, the Frenchgroup Gemalto, is the cause of the problem, two Ger-man newspapers, Handelsblatt and the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger, reported in their editions to appear onWednesday.—Internet

Analysts said the threatwas aimed at forcinggoverments to moveahead with a project thatsupports 40,000 jobs butis three years overdue andover budget. Actually can-celling would be highlyunappetizing at a time ofhigh unemploymentacross Europe, and

alternative planes don’tmeet the requirements setout for the A400M.

Having heart pain without heart attackCHAPEL HILI, 6 Jan—

Patients may suffer heartpain during a period ofseveral years without hav-ing a heart attack, a UScardiologist says.

Dr Cam Patterson ofthe University of NorthCarolina at Chapel HillSchool of Medicine saysone possible example ofheart pain that isn’t a heartattack is small vessel dis-ease or microvascular dis-ease. It is not as threaten-

ing as the blockage oflarge arteries in the heartand it may not necessar-ily require hospitaliza-tion, but it may developinto heart disease,Patterson says.

Patterson says thekeys to better heart healthare to stop smoking, toexercise, to eat right andto reduce stress — whichcan increase blood pres-sure and signal the releaseof adrenaline, which can

spark a heart attack.“A good balanced diet

does a lot to stay on aneven keel, and I tell mypatients a good free re-source for healthy diets iswww.drgourmet.com,”Patterson says in a state-ment. “Being happy is agreat way to reduce stressas well, and I’ve been re-ferring my patients to theHappiness Project —w w w . h a p p i n e s s -project.com — because Ithink there is a lot of goodcommon-sense wisdomthere.”

Coffee linked to lessliver fibrosis

BETHESDA, 6 Jan—Patients with chronic hepatitis Cvirus who consumed about 2 1/4 cups of coffee withcaffeine daily had milder liver fibrosis, US researchersfound. Dr Apurva Modi, the lead author, and fellow re-searchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Di-gestive and Kidney Diseases determined that for pa-tients with chronic hepatitis C virus other sources ofcaffeine beyond coffee did not have the same therapeu-tic effect. Liver fibrosis, or scarring of the liver, is thesecond stage of liver disease, characterized by a degra-dation of liver function due to accumulated connectivetissue.

TORONTO, 6 Jan—Online interventions forproblem alcohol use canbe effective in changingdrinking behaviours andcan offer a public healthbenefit, Canadian re-searchers say.

Dr John Cunningham, senior scientist at the Cen-tre for Addiction and Men-tal Health, says problemdrinking is a major causeof preventable deaths inCanada, as well as sick-

ness, trauma and violence, yet many will never seektreatment. “An unfortunatereality is that many prob-lem drinkers do not seektreatment,” Cunning-hamsaid in a statement.

“While getting helpfrom a healthcare profes-sional is ideal, there arebarriers to access such asconcerns about stigma, adesire to handle problemson one’s own, or simplybecause treatment is notreadily available. Onlineinterventions can help re-duce these barriers by al-lowing people to seek helpin their own homes.”

The study, published inthe journal Addiction, found that problem drink-ers provided access to theonline screener www.

CheckYourDrinking.netreduced their alcohol con-sumption by 30 percent, orsix to seven drinks, weekly. That is compara-ble to face-to-face inter-ventions, and were sus-tained in the three- and six-month follow-ups, thestudy showed.

“The Check YourDrinking online screenerprovides participants witha wealth of informationabout their drinking, itsconsequences, and howthey compare to others,”Cunningham said. “Whenpresented these facts in anon-judgmental manner, participants are able to re-evaluate their drinking andmay be motivated to re-duce their alcohol con-sumption.”—Internet

NEW YORK, 6 Jan—Breast cancer screeningshould begin at age 40, andearlier in high-risk pa-tients, two US medicalgroups say. The recom-mendations by the Societyof Breast Imaging and theAmerican College of Ra-diology suggest appropri-ate utilization of medicalimaging modalities such asmammography, magneticresonance imaging and ul-trasound for breast cancerscreening.“The significantdecrease in breast cancermortality, which amountsto nearly 30 percent since1990, is a major medicalsuccess and is due largelyto earlier detection ofbreast cancer through

mammography screen-ing,” lead study author DrCarol H Lee of MemorialSloan-Kettering CancerCentre says in a statement.

The recommendationsstate the average patientshould begin annual breastcancer screening at age 40.High-risk patients shouldbegin by age 30, but notbefore age 25.

“Evidence to supportthe recommendation forregular periodic screeningmammography comesfrom the results of severalrandomized trials con-ducted in Europe andNorth America that in-cluded a total of nearly500,000 women.

NEW YORK, 6 Jan—Obesity has become anequal, if not greater, con-tributor to illness and ashortened life as smoking,US researchers found.

Haomiao Jia and DrErica I. Lubetkin of Co-lumbia University and TheCity College of New Yorkcalculated that the qualityadjusted life years lost dueto obesity is now equal to,if not greater than, thoselost due to smoking.

The researchers useddata from the 1993-2008Behavioral Risk FactorSurveillance System, which conducted inter-views of more than 3.5million individuals withannual interviews startingwith 102,263 in 1993 and

ending with 406,749 in2008. From 1993-2008,the proportion of smokersamong US adults declined18.5 percent and smoking-related, quality adjustedlife years lost were rela-tively stable at 0.0438quality adjusted life yearslost per population.

During this same pe-riod, the proportion ofobese people increased 85percent and this resulted in0.0464 quality adjustedlife years lost.—Internet
