ENERGY

Energy is involved in every change that occurs

Energy can be found in many different formsex) thermal, electrical, chemical, etc.

KINETIC ENERGY

Kinetic energy is energy in the form of motion.

Kinetic energy depends on both the mass and the velocity of a moving object.

KINETIC ENERGY

KE = mV2

KINETIC ENERGY

Determine the kinetic energy of a 625 kg roller coaster car that is moving with a speed of 18.3 m/s.

KINETIC ENERGY

If the roller coaster car in the previous problem were moving with twice the speed, then what would be its new kinetic energy?

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Potential energy is the stored energy due to an object’s position.

There are 3 types of potential energy.

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in something that can stretch or compress.

ex) a rubber band or a spring

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Chemical potential energy is the energy stored in chemical bonds.

ex) gasoline or food

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored by objects above the Earth’s surface.

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored by objects above the Earth’s surface.

Gravitational potential energy depends on both the mass and the height of an object.

POTENTIAL ENERGY

GPE = m x g x h

POTENTIAL ENERGY

GPE = m x g x h

GPE = gravitational potential energy (Joules)

POTENTIAL ENERGY

GPE = m x g x h

GPE = gravitational potential energy (Joules)m = mass (kg)

POTENTIAL ENERGY

GPE = m x g x h

GPE = gravitational potential energy (Joules)

m = mass (kg)g = gravity (9.8 m/s2)

POTENTIAL ENERGY

GPE = m x g x h

GPE = gravitational potential energy (Joules)

m = mass (kg)g = gravity (9.8 m/s2)h = height (m)

POTENTIAL ENERGY

Wile E. Coyote has a mass of 50 kg. While chasing the Roadrunner, he accidentally runs off the edge of a cliff 60 meters high. What is his gravitational potential energy?

POTENTIAL ENERGY

How high off the ground is a book if it contains 198 joules of potential energy and has a mass of 5 kg?
