NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HONG KONG

The ICMS journey for me has been undoubtedly eventful and challenging, which is the exact reason why we are different. This is a platform for you to outdo yourself, realise potentials you nAver thought existed, and achieve greater heights you never imag-ined. We work closely and help each other throughout the whole journey, and build relationships along the way. I personally have been able to meet associates from UK, USA, and Malaysia in the past couple of months. The most exciting part would be the growing potential of ICMS in terms of geographical expansion in the coming years. Feel free to talk to any of the ICMS Associates if you wish to find our more. Before I sign off, think of ICMS as a place for you to grow, learn, and contribute. Thank you.

As a new year is upon us, we here at ICMS would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and may 2015 be a wonderful ahead! A big shout-out goes to our designer, Abdul Rahim for his amazing work. A week-long induction programme was conducted for each country throughout November and December. The aim is to develop leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as to expose them to the working cul-ture of ICMS. To officially end the programme, Malaysia & Singapore, UK, and Hong Kong, each had an Induction Day for the Junior Associ-ates (JAs) to meet their teammates for the very first time. On the other hand, a tele-conference was conducted for USA and Canada to conclude their programme. The Induction Day started with an ice breaking ses-sion and was followed by insightful activities such as getting acquainted with representatives from our partners and sponsors, who were very sup-portive of the organisation, and a session for team presentations by the JAs, which was the highlight of the day. In order to garner the interest of the audience, all the teams showed great determination and enthusiasm when presenting their proposed idea in which they have been working on relentlessly for the past week. At the end of the day, the JAs received their ‘Letter of Appointment’ and officially became an Associate of the ICMS. The fond memories that the JAs shared made it hard to say good-bye, especially since the relationship has just begun. Nevertheless, it is not the distance that matters but the friendship that shall last a lifetime.

The Induction Day at Maybank Hong Kong was professionally organized and co-ordinated. I gained so much insight on the qualities ICMS expects from us, Junior Associates, and how ICMS operates and communicates with Associates around the world. Throughout the day, we were required to plan an event, write a pro-posal and pitch it to the sponsors. I am grateful that the opportunity given to me during that day was really useful and managed to cooperate with outstanding Malaysians from different universities in Hong Kong. At ICMS, we constantly con-nect with talented and passionate Malaysians regardless of where we are and with this pool of talents, we strive to develop innovative ideas and inspire one

another. “If opportunity doesn’t knock, we build a door.” –Milton Berle

I’ll sum up my experience during the ICMS induction day in one word - superb. Being able to indulge in a diverse range of activities during my academic career, ranging from ideation to proposal development, and to pitching, was something which I could never obtain it anywhere else. The induction day was tailored to provide us with a unique environment and a sense of how ICMS is like. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to learn and to equip ourselves with the necessary skills needed to tackle challenges in the future. At the same time, there were lots

of delicious pizzas as well.

I steadied myself. Focusing my vision through the scope and making sure my hands were not as shaky as a washing machine from the nineties, I placed my finger on the trigger and

Voila! A high definition image of an inspiring individual was generated on the camera screen. A memento to behold, the image could only speak of a brief moment in time – The Essence of Networking. In reality, the indi-vidual was up and about with expressive hand gestures and passionate flair; words of wisdom, experience and sincerity parted from her lips. Ms Jazz Tan recounted her difficulties growing up, how she decided to face the challenges head on and establish her business at the age of 19, all the while maintaining a delicate balance between her studies, family and her career. The crux of her business’ success was the networks that she built alongside her friends whom she established her company together; networks that expanded as she met more seasoned and business savvy individuals who shared their experiences and knowledge on growing her business into the impactful company that it is today.

The audience was in full fascination and admiration to-wards the trials of her journey, listening to every word as Ms Jazz continued to emphasise the need for ded-ication in what we do to make a change in our own lives; and how we can effect a change in others as well towards their collective well-being. As I continued to capture the moments through my lenses, questions erupted from the minds of the audience: How do we use networking to our advantage? What does it mean to network effectively and build lasting elationships?

Mr Michael Teoh paced around the room, deeply fo-cused in his inspiring speech to the audience. He spoke of the spirit of an entrepreneur and of those who can aspire to become as such – how networks build better characterand its undoubted benefits towards achieving success as a team Highlighting the shift in Human Re-source’s recruitment scene, Mr Michael stressed that companies and businesses are determined to hire in-dividuals who are able to extend their ideas and reach out effectively towards others. As he beckoned to them in their seats, he described the greatness of human potential; the driver of action and passion which net-working with people of similar greatness may see new heights of achievement in their careers.Time seemed irrelevant; the participants grew more eager to listen about his experiences.

Mr Stanley Chee stood in a firm stance, facing towards his audience. With a soft expression, he spoke of the fundamentals of networking and what it meant to him personally – to not only network for the sake of doing so, but to build lasting and meaningful relationships beyond the ordinary notion of business matters. As he continued on, he sought common ground with those who found the discomfort inapproaching strangers during networking sessions especially for the introvert-ed.Meeting as strangers, conversing as acquaintances and leaving as friends; Mr Stanley put it to the audience thatnetworking should never be a thing of conversation on pretense, rather an opportunity to understand and bond.

The audience; participants of the Link, shared their curi-osity with the speakers of the day – Ms Jazz, Mr Michaeland Mr Stanley. They stood attentively around them, questioning all they can and listening intently to their wis-dom. They gathered in groups and accompanied them to the refreshment area outside; the air of conversation was getting warmer. Some decided to take autographs on their books, some wanted to have pictures taken and some pondered on their newfound knowledge as food and beverages were served. The voices of discussion grew louder. Though only a brief few hours have passed for the honourable speakers to enlighten the participants with their experiences, it was wonderful to see that they were empowered by their words and motivation to ap-proach networking in a more holistic and positive man-ner.Through smiles and excited chatter, the participants connected with the speakers

I looked at the enthusiastic crowd. Indeed, they have tak-en a great step forward with this endeavour – the organ-isers; PDI of ICMS Malaysia, ICMS associates, speakers and fellow participants. They have established the Link.

And as the day began to conclude, I raised my camera for one last time.

I2 is an annual event where students gain insights into various industries from leaders of renowned companies, and where these companies can recruit potential employees. It also serves as an interactive platform where participants are able to market them-selves to kick start their career. The event exposes participants to not only their industry of choice but also other industries as well, and allows them to ex-perience what it feels like to be in that industry. It also enables aspiring youths to connect with renowned companies within Malaysia, and among themselves through the available platform that I2 provides.

BwC is a series of networking sessions between participants and the CEO of a company. In the past, BwC was organised by TalentCorp, but as of 2014, ICMS has been given the opportunity to organ-ise future BwC events. Participants will learn more about a company from a leadership perspective and appreciate the roles and responsibilities of a CEO. Also, they will be inspired and exposed to the struc-ture, team and philosophy of that company, through an intimate and exclusive session with the CEO.
