What the Staff Has Been Reading

Your staff has just begun reading “AWE Why It Matters For Everything We

think, Say & Do” by Paul David Tripp. In his book, Paul David Tripp talks

about “uncovering the lies we believe about all the early things that promise

us peace, life, and contentment. Spiritual growth is about recapturing awe.”

See Nancy Price about checking this book out at our Media Center!

In February our church began reading together the devotional Why Pray by John Devries. As we finished it in March, many of you commented on how it impacted your view for the necessity to pray daily for your home and the homes in your community. Honestly, this understanding was the foundation and purpose for the devotional. Devries wrote: “Do you have a vision of bringing ‘hope’ to your family? Making your home a Home Of Prayer Every day will result in the gift of a positive, excited, hope-filled attitude toward life. Nothing will drive out anxiety, depression, fighting, and division as a regular time of prayer and praise together. Nothing will correct our view of life as does being washed in the presence of Christ…” (217). He also wrote, “As you encourage your family to meet weekly—to pray, to share, to care—encourage them also to dream awesome dreams. Like the leper transformed by Christ, and with the same passion, trust, and humility, encourage each member not only to bring each other, but to bring five other families to Christ in prayer. Dare to dream that Christ could and would transform the five families, just as He transformed the leper years ago” (242).

As many of you understood from the book, we make disciples of those in our home and our community through the biblical process known as “pray, care, share.” We pray for those in our home and the homes in our community, asking God to reveal Himself, and give us an opportunity to care for those around us in practical ways. And then, as the Holy Spirit gives us the opportunity, we share the truth of Jesus; we tell those we are interacting with what we know about Christ and invite them to have the same relationship with Jesus that we enjoy. I cannot express how excited I am to hear of how the Holy Spirit has used this book to focus many in our church on making disciples in their homes and community, and the significant role prayer plays in the process.

However, as we finish the book, there is one daunting and formidable question: “What do we do now?” The obvious answer is to practically implement what the book discussed—to actively pray, care, and share with those in our home and community. So where do we begin? With prayer; prayer is the foundation for making disciples, therefore, we must saturate our home and community with prayer. In your home, I encourage you to use the methods Devries suggested on Day 37 and Day 39; spend each day in prayerful praise and Bible study and you will have a home of H.O.P.E. (Home Of Prayer Every day). For your community I encourage you to sign up on the “Pray 4 Every Home” website (www.pray4everyhome.com). This website allows you to pray for the one hundred closest households in your community by name over a twenty-day period. This prayer format is organized and effective.

I do believe God has used the “Why Pray” devotional to speak to many in our church about the necessity of praying with and for those in our home and community—all we need to do now is obey Him. As we focus on prayer this year, may we continue to seek Him, crave His presence, and never cease to pray for our home and community. Prayer is about relationship—may we truly be desperate for Him!

For His glory,

Brad

Minister of Education

Portraying Christ to our World

Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

During these pretty days of spring I trust you are continuing to pray for your neighbors, friends and family and are doing regular prayer walking. You see it’s our conduct and the way we communicate that others catch a glimpse of Jesus in our world.

How We Act: We look like Jesus when we love as He does. Serving others goes a long way. Jesus said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35

How We React: We resemble our Savior as we refuse to retaliate when others say and do hurtful things. Be Christ like and turn the other cheek.

What We Say: Our quiet time with the Lord can result in words that remind others of Jesus’ nature & words of affirmation, compassion & encouragement.

Be Blessed and Be a Blessing, Pastor Mike

For 27 years I have attempted occasionally to add up the hours of work it takes to prepare and present the Living Cross. We can figure the hours that are spent in “scheduled” activities like Choir and Drama rehearsals, Joint rehearsals when the lighting, sound, props, costumes and make-up groups come together; even days when Calvin Miller and David Eakins organized the “crew” to construct the cross. But from the beginning when David Eakins, Ben McPherson, Charlie Swart and Alton Bass (1989 Building & Grounds) spent many months designing and constructing the cross for the first time, it has been impossible to track all the personal and “behind the scenes” hours people have devoted to this ministry:

Choir members, Instrumentalists, Drama, Lighting, Sound, Props, Costume, Make-up, Ushers, Greeters, Parking & Security Teams, Set designers, Builders & Painters, Banner designers and Creators, Publicity Team, Child-Care volunteers, Meal preparation volunteers, our Pastor and Staff who all support and participate in this Ministry! Most importantly, the countless hours that many have spent in prayer for the Living Cross!! THANK YOU & TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!

Keep PraiSing Him!! Peggy

Pick up your shoebox today!

WE NEED SILENT PRAYER PARTNERS!!!

God spoke to several of the youth leaders during the Prayer Walk Weekend. Through Dr. Scofield, God reinforced the urgency for us as a church to pray specifically for our Student Ministry and our Youth, both individually and focused. With their parent’s permission, we will produce prayer cards similar to those that missionaries give out. On the front, it will have their picture and information that already is in our directory while the back will contain general prayer prompts with scripture references. If you would like to participate in this ministry please see Andrea Gore (910-343-2953) or myself. As we read in “Why Pray”, it makes no sense to push our car (Student Ministry) that is out of gas (our “good” works) past a gas station (prayer) because we are in a hurry to move to the next event. WILL YOU JOIN US?
